Pickle2503's Attack of the Clones Theatrical Preservation(ish) (Released)

Update 01/09/20: And it’s done! PM me for a google drive link!

So since we don’t have a theatrical preservation for Attack of the Clones I thought I would go ahead and create one. I used schorman13’s HDTV version as the base as the color timing is closest to the theatrical cut, and Bobson Dugnutt’s Centropy Remastered for a few shots that have been altered from theatrical to DVD. I decided to recreate the 35mm version as that is what most people would have seen in 2002. Now I know this isn’t a full theatrical preservation [that’s why I said preservation(ish)] as the Centropy shots are the best source for a few sequences but this is the best we can get for the time being! Here is a list of changes I’ve made to the HDTV version and timecodes.

00:20:20:08 - 00:20:23:02
I switched the shot of obi-wan catching Anakin’s lightsaber to the centropy shot where more speeders are present.

01:26:01:10 - 01:26:03:03
Cut out the “to be angry is to be human” and the “I’m a jedi, I should be better…” lines, and added 42 frames to the shot where padme comforts? Anakin. (The shot is 42 frames longer in the theatrical cut).

01:52:39:21 - 01:52:41:11 & 01:52:54:09 - 01:52:57:03
Reverted the shots of Jango’s jetpack to the centropy version where less sparks are present.

02:14:47:21 - 02:14:54:21
Replaced the shot of Anakin’s CGI hand taking Padme’s hand with the original shot from the centropy of his practical hand twitching a few times before it cuts back to the HDTV version as the camera pans up to Anakin and Padme kissing.

All the audio is the 2002 35mm theatrical DTS track.

All subtitles have been timed correctly and placed within the frame correctly, (using spooRv’s amazing UAR version of the centropy bootleg to account for the camera’s upward perspective).

I have exported the video with maximum quality settings with a blu-ray compliant encode and a bitrate of about 40 so the quality is the best we can get from this encode using the HDTV source. It’s currently a 50ish gig file and although I am not willing to upload to the spleen as my living situation will not allow me to continuously seed, I have uploaded it to google drive and you can request it from me via PM.

Thanks!

Do you have each channel on its own track in Premiere? You should be able to mute all but one, export a mono WAV or AIFF of that one channel, then repeat for the other five channels. You can then load up your individual mono channels in one of many free programs to render a 5.1 AC3 track.

I don’t have each channel on it’s own track, is there a way I can separate the channels in premiere?

Well, I use Premiere but I’ve never used a dedicated 5.1 track, I’ve always split my source audio into mono WAVs from the beginning and edited using each one on a separate track, linked together, with each track panned left, right, or center as needed. Then I use my above method of muting all but one track and exporting individually.

Can you export as a 5.1 PCM (probably a WAV file)?

Also, just noticed the end of your post - yes, we do have the theatrical DTS audio. I don’t remember if I have it somewhere or not. Schorman is probably the one to ask for access to that.

Gotcha, well then I’ll check about that first

This is odd but when I went again into the export settings, it showed that I actually could export a 5.1 track so I am reexporting right now and I am limiting the bitrate to 40mbps to make it Blu-Ray compliant.

I never had much luck with exporting 5.1 out of Premiere. When I was doing my Chronologically LOST HD remaster, I exported them out to 6 mono wavs and used Audacity to export them again to a 5.1 file.

Additionally I ask if we have the Theatrical DTS track for attack of the clones because if so, the previous paragraph will be irrelevant aas I can just mux that into the video file and I won’t need to export anything new from premiere.

Unfortunately as far as I’m aware we don’t.

How Attack of the Clones is the only film to not have an actual theatrical copy that isn’t a crappy bootleg in 2019 astounds me. Even the aforementioned DTS track would be something.

After you get the 5.1 sorted I’d love to give it a watch though, not many theatrical preservations of AOTC have been attempted.

Are you sure? I thought we had cinema DTS tracks for the 97 SE’s and the PT. I know we have TPM and ROTS, I was pretty positive we had AOTC, too.

You’re right, I just checked the usual place and we do have the PT DTS tracks.

That’s my bad, I’ve been out of the loop for a little bit.

Are they on the spleen, I couldn’t find them. Under what name?

I’d love a link to these as well, if they aren’t on the Spleen

Watching the Centropy again, I want the theatrical cut more than ever now.

The iso-disc image of the CinemaDTS CD-ROM discs can be found on the usenet circuit, but one would have to do the work in encoding the .AUD files and syncing them to the 23.975fps video.

You can do some reading on this here:
http://originaltrilogy.com/topic/The-1997-Star-Wars-Special-Edition-Trilogy-Preservation-Standards-Thread-Work-In-Progress/id/14647/page/1

See I never understood how the Usenet think worked, would you mind explaining it to me, sorry 😕

Is there any way I can just find a track to mux into the video or is that not possible?

I saw the 35mm print only once in the theater, and the digital twice. I had a question back then that I don’t really remember answering:

After the title crawl, the digital/home video version has an upward tilt through the starfield (the only one in the trilogy that does that)… does the Film/Centropy version move up as well, or does it move down?

Thanks kindly!

Yes I believe that all of them have a tilt up!

Ah yes, this line delivered by Anakin in the 35mm version was omitted in the digital release.

Yes it was right before he said “I hate them!”. I’ve dubbed it I’m using my own voice.

Lol sry guys I was very drunk last night when I posted happy New Years.

FYI, I would again recommend contacting Schorman to see if he has a patched version of the Cinema DTS that he can provide you (he’s done so for TPM and ROTS, but I don’t know if he ever did AOTC since until now the only thing to sync it to was the Centropy bootleg).

I did like 4ish days ago but I haven’t gotten a response yet 😕
