4K restoration on Star Wars — Page 311

Regardless of what is included in this boxset I won’t be buying it.

I’ve bought the Star Wars Trilogy 9 times in different formats and releases since the early 90s. I think that’s enough commercial contribution to Lucasfilm for multiple lifetimes.

 (Edited)

If I can get literal hours of unreleased John Williams music via isolated scores on this set, I’ll absolutely pay for that. That’s a pretty valuable “extra” should it be included, and it’s probably the last “big” extra that’s never appeared in any set. Even Lucas admitted that a huge reason any of this ever worked was due to that music, and I think a set for “The Skywalker Saga” could stand to dedicate something more than just a puff-piece 10min EPK to celebrating Williams’ contributions. Isolated scores containing hours of music we’ve never had a chance to hear or own before is a great way to do that.

Author
Time

Original trilogy isolated scores are meaningless to me if they are the cut up and modified versions from the SEs.

If the unaltered versions are (again) absent from the 4K set, then I’ll pass.

Any ‘exclusive’ content to this set will be available on the ‘net in time. I can wait.

By purchasing the set, people only encourage DISNEY & LUCASFILM to further bury the originals.

Say “NO” to Maclunkey.

Author
Time

Again - if you choose to describe HOURS of new music never before released as “meaningless” because three of the 9 films will have that music synced to the 4K cuts, that’s your choice, but I don’t understand describing John Williams’ Star Wars music as “meaningless” in any context, really. It obviously has some value otherwise you wouldn’t be implying that you’ll just steal it once it’s pirated online anyway.

My hypothetically choosing to buy a hypothetical set with Isolated Scores of John Williams’ compositions isn’t encouraging Disney to bury the originals. And as has been stated before - the idea they’re going to be encouraged or discouraged by anything we do at this point is pretty silly.

As an aside: I’m getting the sense people here might honestly believe all the music in the OT was presented exactly as Williams composed it and it wasn’t changed until 1997? That’s very much not true. And further - a LOT of the music we have gotten from the OT we only got thanks to the SE being released in theaters. Before that, some of it saw official release in 1993, but up until that release, all we had were the original album releases.

There is still a LOT of Star Wars music we haven’t heard outside of their placement in the films, and if there’s an extra that allows us to hear it, that’s a worthwhile extra, to me.

Author
Time

Forgive me if I’m mistaken, but I believe the only OT music in the films that hasn’t been released at this point is a short TESB insert and two diegetic cues from ROTJ.

Author
Time

I do believe there’s more than that, but even if there isn’t, there’s still a ton from The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith, The Force Awakens, and The Rise of Skywalker that hasn’t been released yet.

Besides which, being able to watch the movies with that music synced to picture hasn’t been an officially released option ever.

Oh I’m aware (although the TPM Ultimate Edition is primarily the score as presented in the film).

Not official no, but anyone interested should know it’s an option included with Despecialized and 4K77, I believe.

Author

I believe it’s also an option on 4K83 - and there’s a version where the music from Ben Kenobi’s sit-down with Luke is restored to picture as well.

Steal what? You mean like all the people that have downloaded the fan restorations/preservations? perhaps yourself included?

I’ve spent enough money on STAR WARS over the decades, I’m not wasting more money on constantly revised rubbish that barely resembles the classic original films.

I promised myself I would only be interested in this if the originals are included.
I would like to own the official product and not a fan edit. I don’t have a problem paying for it.

Yup.
And the few missing bits from Jedi (which I’d love to have) no longer exist.
In the fan-made isolated scores these bits are choppy edits from the actual film track. I’ve long planned to make better versions of these, but I haven’t gotten around to it.

What is everyone’s impression of the zoomed in Greedo shot quality wise? Does it look like the full frame scan was used and then the resolution upgraded or does it seem as if the original scan achieve the 4K resolution even though zoomed in?

What you just described isn’t the same as what you’d initially said. You don’t already own a version of blu-ray extras that haven’t ever been made, so you “waiting til they’re online” isn’t the same thing. That’s just pirating. The amount of money you’ve spent and the personal promises you’ve made (and the entitlement you think it provides you) is your business, but it doesn’t have anything to do with the point I’m making, which you just unintentionally highlighted with the bolded:

I would like to own the official product. An official version (possibly taken from new elements, even) of the full scores to ALL the Star Wars movies in that set, synced to picture. That doesn’t exist yet. It’s never existed, in fact. if this set has it, I’m going to buy it. I don’t know why this has become such a point of contention. There’s a lot of unreleased music I’d love to listen to and this hypothetical extra would give it to me.

If we’re going to start arguing that “well what you’d like to see in an official release already exists in a fan-edit so why bother” that kinda defeats the purpose, doesn’t it?

(Besides - for most of these movies what I’d like to see - or hear, rather - doesn’t exist in a fan-edit).

After re-reading the last page of this thread, I’m just not seeing any contention. I just see people who want different things, and are making different choices based on what they want. You want the isolated scores and don’t mind the 4KSE versions of them. Other people don’t see any value in the 4KSE versions of the score (or any of the other films). Everyone here’s a rational actor making purchasing decisions based in their personal preferences. The expression of a different preference is not an implication that your preference is wrong for you.

As for me (and probably like many here), I have interest in only three films: the unaltered original trilogy. I would absolutely buy a grossly overpriced boxed set containing nine films that I have no intention of ever watching in order to get those three films. But those three films are nowhere to be found in the set that’s been announced.

At the moment, that means no sale, because there’s zero value (to me) in that set. If, however, a good-quality fan reconstruction of the films I actually want arrives that is based on those 4KSE’s, according to the rules of fan edit ownership here, I will buy them. And if this set is the only way to get them, then that’s 27 really expensive coasters heading my way, 24 of which I suppose I can immediately throw away, and three of which I can handle like my existing official Blu-rays: glue them all together, put a string through the middle, and suspend them inside one of the cavities in the walls of my house, so nobody accidentally watches them or stumbles across them and thinks that I like those films enough to buy them, but good enough to fish out if someone ever questions my legitimate ownership requirement for the fan reconstruction.

I guess the sense of contention I’m feeling is basically that I said “I would probably buy these if it had X thing that I want and I think has a lot of value” and the direct responses TO that contain a lot of things that essentially suggest “the thing you want is basically worthless, let me count the ways.”

Like this whole scenario:

And if this set is the only way to get them, then that’s 27 really expensive coasters heading my way, 24 of which I suppose I can immediately throw away, and three of which I can handle like my existing official Blu-rays: glue them all together, put a string through the middle, and suspend them inside one of the cavities in the walls of my house, so nobody accidentally watches them or stumbles across them and thinks that I like those films enough to buy them, but good enough to fish out if someone ever questions my legitimate ownership requirement for the fan reconstruction.

I guess it’s just coming across as sort of a passive-aggressive means to minimize the possibility I might get something out of this official release, which seems like a weird response to my direct statements (and direct conversations) explaining why I want a thing, and would get said thing if it was provided. You say it isn’t an implication that I’m making some sort of mistake in finding something potentially worthwhile in this set (should it even be there), but it feels that way to me, and apologies on my part if that’s a misunderstanding, but I’m not really convinced it actually is, considering your direct response denying any implication really exists is essentially “oh, well, that’s all well and good but the thing you want is so worthless to me I wouldn’t just destroy it, I’d turn it into something so unusable I’d put it INSIDE the walls of my home so I wouldn’t have to pretend I even own it unless the Fan Edit police come and investigate me.”

It’s hard to believe there’s no implication there of subtly suggesting or demonstrating that accepting any conditions by which this set might have value is being frowned upon.

I’ll stop bringing it up. Apologies to all, again.

That’s a pretty fair summary, actually.

It’s hard to believe there’s no implication there of subtly suggesting or demonstrating that accepting any conditions by which this set might have value is being frowned upon.

To illustrate my point, replace the various iterations of Star Wars with ice cream flavors. I think Strawberry sucks and I’d never buy it, and if someone gave it to me for free I still wouldn’t eat it and would just throw it away, and if any somehow got on my tongue I’d have to wash my mouth out. And yet in spite of that, I’d have no ill opinion of you at all if Strawberry happens to be your most favoritist flavor ever.

Because people have wildly different preferences on things, and that’s all fine.

That is seriously what I did with the 2011SE’s. You glue the shiny sides together so it’s really clear what’s on the disks. Star Wars and Empire on the sides, Jedi in the middle, a little offcenter so that you can see some of its cover too. They’re currently hanging inside the wall cavity of my youngest child’s bedroom closet.

It is the same. I would buy the set if the originals were included (properly restored). If not, then I’ll pass. Should any bonus content from this set (I’m more interested in deleted material from the OT than isolated scores - especially the SE hack job) make it online, fine, I’ll add it to my 2011 BD collection.

Please, enough with this entitlement crap. It’s not entitlement to want the originals officially released.

I remember being fascinated by a lot of the unused music from ESB for a long time.

The unused bit from ROTJ i like with the synth and ryhthm I think it is for the Chicken Walkers or AT-ST’s

Something I pondered about Star Wars for quite a time was if the force theme was meant to play as they fly towards Yavin IV in the falcon… The Radio Drama places that music there and it always felt like it needed a bit of music but was never there.

The Other bit from Star wars is that abrupt cut just as the falcon flys away from the death star just cuts off in a weird way. I have wondered if the falcon was meant to go straight past the camera extending that shot or if it was something sort of sound effects related always just a bit abrupt and never really happens in the film at all apart from then. Be interesting how that bit would sound without sound effects.

Love it.
But be careful… Some may not think that’s valid.
I got heavily berated for announcing that I only own the paper receipt from my purchase of the BD boxset. “THAT’S NOT GOOD ENOUGH! HE SHOULD BE BANNED!” even though it proves, irrevocably, that I paid my hard earned cash for the set (you can even trace it to my bank account). Simply possessing the set says nothing. Ya coulda’ stole it, bought it second hand, ect.

And what would be wrong with the latter? Or do you need to actually pay the megacorporations for a brand spankin’ new copy to “legitimately” download fan-edits/preservations/etc.?

Oh, nothing at all! I really couldn’t care any less.
It’s just silly to say that I have less right to own fan edits when I actually have proof that my money went to LFL.
