Oh, I see! Sorry for jumping the gun on that one. I definitely don’t mind what I saw in the video and it does cut together pretty seamlessly.

I like that a lot more!

I just watched this cut and thought it was incredible. It felt way closer in tone to the OT.

Story lines were also much cleaner and make way more sense.

I also watched Rise of Skywalker yesterday, and thought this edit was a much better fit with the new film.

My only critique perhaps, is the movie felt a little bit dry perhaps, especially in the first half with most of the humour cut out. I also think pace is a bit of issue with the middle third, but that might just be the way the original was.

Overall though, much cleaner and way more satisfying. It really built expectation for Rey in film 3 which is what I liked as well, I never really got that sense from the OG TLJ. I also had much more sympathy for Luke, which was surprising, and felt Luke and Rey had a better relationship development. I’m not sure what changes contributed to that.

One other thing though, which I would have loved to have seen, would be some better hint at Rey’s lineage, as revealed in film IV, especially perhaps under the island. I would have loved to have seen a Dark Rey there; but that might be a stretch too far for the cutting room.

Overall, great job, it would have certainly added a notch to the critic rating for sure.

Hey Hal, as much as I didn’t feel it was necessary in the past, might you consider using Poppasketti’s version of Finn’s run at the First Order cannon, where he’s shot down instead of Rose saving him? The reason I bring this up is because

SPOILERS

Finn and Rose’s romance is dropped like a hot potato in Episode IX.

I’m really not sure about modifying any of the other films to suit IX right now, because the grief is still too near. I very well may just choose to ignore it.

TROS is actively antithetical to everything I’ve tried to do the past handful of years, and deeply incongruous with the good aspects of the last two films taken collectively. If I’m going to give it a fair treatment, I will need to take time to muster enough goodwill toward it, come to understand it somewhat thoroughly, and most importantly wait for at least some community ideas. Or I could retreat to a remote island and burn the fan edits.

I mean, you managed to make Attack of the Clones watchable, so I’m sure you’ll be able to make something out of it 😉. Seriously though, I understand how you’re feeling. I’m happy for the people who enjoyed it, but TROS probably disappointed me more than any other recent Star Wars film. It will take some serious work to make it harmonize with the rest of the saga, especially The Last Jedi, which has quickly become one of my favorite Star Wars films.

Hardly. I mostly just synthesized the ideas of others and tried to present them well. It’s hard to imagine TROS in particular being subjected to much fan editing, being such an aggressive and breakneck movie. I will try to understand it, but I suspect it’s as vacuous as it seems. No one had the chance to put any thought into it, so the surface level is the entirety of it.

I do get the feeling there’s more depth and thought put into it than what the theatrical cut suggests. From hearing JJ and Chris Terrio talk about the themes of the saga, I feel that when we get the deleted material back in the film we’ll get a fuller picture of what the filmmaker’s real artistic expression was before they stuck the film in a blender. I may be wrong, but that’s my perception/hope.

Here’s a small continuity adjustment you can make. Take a look at the two shots of Rey turning around to face Ben in Snoke’s throne room. It looks like she turned around twice.

On a side note, I’ve now seen The Rise of Skywalker. It was pretty good, but had some flaws for sure, I need to see it again. When will you start your thread of your edit of The Rise of Skywalker.

Also, I noticed you made an edit of Rogue One on your Google Drive. I thought you said you weren’t going to make edits of the spin-off films.

The name’s Lawson. Noah Lawson.

I barely did. I just took a few ideas from DigMod to make a very quick edit.

And I won’t make a thread for an edit of TROS until I’m sure I’ll be doing one. Don’t wait up, it might be a while.

I’m encoding V3 right now. I still need to adjust subtitles and chapters to match, but here’s the cutlist:

What’s new compared to V2:

  • Removed the silly mugshot of Hux after commenting on Poe’s X-wing approach
  • Removed Luke’s quip about Jakku being “pretty much nowhere” (the new movies are somewhat snarky in ways the OT never was IMHO, and so I’d rather keep Luke away from that - humor, but not gags)
  • Removed Rose responding to Finn’s “MTFBWY” with “you too.”
  • Reinstated Rose repeating “…they can track us through lightspeed.”
  • Tighten up Finn and Rose’s reaction to Maz’s “Oh yes, he can” for better timing
  • Reinstate a trimmed version of the balcony scene overlooking kids and horses being beaten on Canto Bight
  • Reinstate Rey asking Kylo Ren if he has a cowl to put on
  • Add Emperor laughing as Luke looks into Kylo’s mind during the third and final flashback
  • Remove Snoke’s line about “destroying the entire island” due to removal of Caretakers
  • I’m leaving out the line about Rey’s parents being buried on Jakku (not a new change, just pointing it out)
  • Removed Finn’s fight with Phasma by using what poppasketti did, which now includes a brief visual of Phasma’s corpse laying around to help sell the idea
  • Reinstate Finn’s line about “miniaturized Death Star tech,” as it unfortunately ties into IX.
  • Removed slow-motion shot as Luke dodges a swipe from Kylo during their duel

Those changes look great! (except for the “nowhere” joke and phasma fight i liked those in the movie tbh).

I didn’t like TROS at all, but is nice to see that with the help of fan edits this trilogy could feel a little more cohesive.

Could something of palpatine be added to the “you went straight to the dark” scene?

I believe TROS sets up Leia as having know Rey’s parentage, but not Luke. So I don’t think adding anything like that would be a great fit.

I want to try to make sure this is the case and that her mention of Jakku doesn’t factor in, but I think the implication is that Luke didn’t know anyway.

I have some suggestions:

  • Replace the rest of the end credits music with Darth Sidious’ speech from Fortnite, and then put the audio clip of him cackling after the credits are over and just before the Lucasfilm logo is shown.
  • Insert Han Solo’s “Ben!” from The Force Awakens into when Luke is reading Ben’s mind.

The unfortunate reality of the Star Wars prequel and Disney trilogies is that they will always be around. Forever. They will never go away. It can never be undone.

I also prefer to be referred to as “TNT”, not “Freezing”.

I’m hoping there’ll be a place within TROS for the radio broadcast, and it really would come out of left field within TLJ itself. Once the credits roll, the story is over.

I’d like to have that radio broadcast intercut with the fleet being raised from the ice, so that the timing of Palps revealing himself is a little less arbitrary; he was waiting for Kylo.

That would be great, that would make it a future force vision similar to the ones anakin had in the prequels.

That’s the single worst line in the entirety of the ST. It really isn’t neccessary to help establish TROS.

Fair enough. I don’t like it either, so it didn’t take much to talk me out of it.

That line will be re-removed, and Rey’s line “they were nobody” is back in.

V3 is uploading to the Google Drive now. Lookout for it on the other venues soon, whenever I can find an hour to sit down and make it happen.

While I don’t doubt that cool and interesting ideas may surface with time, especially ways to tie into TROS, I am more than happy with this V3 and can precariously call this final.

Thank you for your continuous work and your amazing edits.

I would like to ask if there is a chance we will see the TLJ:L on 4K, or even other of your edits, now that 4K editions are coming on March from Disney?

And no, none of my edits will ever surpass 1080p BluRay spec for a host of reasons.

If anyone would ever like to attempt it, feel free to lay my lossless audio output and a proxy rip of the video streams into an editor and recreate the video in 4K or whatever. But I cannot, due to technical limitations and much of the source material being sourced from 1080p and 480p. The entire saga is being mastered at 1080p with 5.1 DTS and that’s as far as I can take things.

I see, thank you for your response, and although negative, I will always hope to see your edits on 4K in the future!
