I posted a short while ago about how I would have liked to see TROS remove the extremes of the Jedi and Sith orders and replace them with the “grey” as has been bandied about for a while now…I said I thought TROS brought a smidge of that to light but did not see it through.

I just read this comment in the following YouTube video about the Easter eggs in the movie (I got almost all of them but they aren’t that difficult to spot)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NajCKoU4x8k

The post is from someone called “Tyler Rice” and I was intrigued.

  1. Anikan was created by palpatine, allowing palpatine to control how powerful he could become, while Rey, still from palpatine, was not under his control and was able to keep growing, and because the force chose her as the true chosen one it made her strong.

  2. Rey and kylo form the dyad, two foce sensitive beings connected to become stronger, thing yin and yang. Rey came from darkness and went to light while kylo came from light and went to darkness. They form one complete chosen one, the dyad.

  3. When they healed each other bits of their life force went into themselves meaning they exchanged energies , kylo with his dark energy and rwy with her light energy. In the end rey ended up with light and dark within her which is why she had a yellow saber in the end, she had officially become a grey Jedi, or Skywalker have you.

  4. The prophecy always said that the chosen one would bring true balance to the force. Well after return of the Jedi, Luke was what was lefy, a Jedi. The force can not be balanced while one extreme side of the spectrum still exists. So when palpatine returned he took kylo so Rey and like remained. All the Skywalker’s died and kylo basically transfered his life force into her and her being a palpatine makes her lightpath still have darkness in it as well meaning she is a grey Jedi or Skywalker meaning that both pure Jedi and pure sith were gone forever, achieving real balance in the force.

Hmm…the last 6 posts or so seem to suggest that Star Wars has become the brainless entertainment it’s critics always claimed it was.

And we fans are happy to settle for this now. Can’t wait for Michael Bay to direct the Sequel-Sequel Trilogy!

Here’s the thing: I would argue TROS isn’t mindless. That’s what makes it still “good” to me even if it’s throwing everything at the wall.

Rey in TFA was holding back. Finally she accepts her destiny and holds the lightsaber… and in TLJ we have nearly no conflict for her, with most the focus on Luke. In TROS, Rey is most certainly not a ”Mary Sue” or any other hateful term. Making her a Palpatine is so much better than no one because it gives her character something to struggle with. If she was just no one what would she do? Prove someone who comes from nothing can win? We’re all expecting that.

Poe was a fun “hero” character in TFA, where they didn’t have time to explore his character. In TLJ he becomes a fill-in for the audience to teach us “no no no daring plots are bad… forget about Starkiller Base which was just yesterday”. In TROS, we learn so much more about Poe. His relationships with the other characters are stand out, and we also learn an interesting nuanced backstory.

Finn was lots of fun in TFA but like Poe becomes a stand-in for “no no no heroism is bad forget about Holdo’s heroism an hour before”. In TROS we get to see Finn interact with other deserters. I would have preferred more time be spent here, but considering how much they had to fit in it’s good they at least introduced it.

Ben could never be the villain of the ST. I agree with TLJ it’s a really interesting idea to see Kylo do what Vader could not, but TFA had already established him as a joke and Crait isn’t flattering to him either. So there had to be some new big bad. What really impressed me with TROS was Ben’s early redemption. No need to waste the central drama around redoing ROTJ, they made it about if Rey could be turned, and with Ben already set to possibly fight an evil Rey I was emotionally invested in the conclusion.

So no, I don’t think Michael Bay directing TROS would have had the same result.

On paper this sounds well thought out, but what the grand finale shew was once more the destruction and ultimately the denial of evil. Without being aware of evil you can’t evaluate its influence on you nor have a balanced view.

So, I saw it midnight Wednesday night/Thursday morning in the UK. At that time i felt it went at 10000mph with no time for the emotional beats to register and it was a bit of a mess but i walked out enjoying it if quite disappointed. I didn’t hate it but equally, whilst i thought the film was fine i was a tad disappointed. I saw it again last night with my wife and some friends who are casual fans. They all LOVED it. I, seeing it again and knowing the plot, REALLY enjoyed it second time around. I was swept away with the emotion and was happy to step over the plot holes, after al plot holes aren’t unique to the sequel trilogy. It was so cathartic. I recommend doing this!

Is it perfect? Hell NO! Is it as bad or as good as people say with their 1/10 or 10/10 reviews & do they represent a true reflection? I don’t think so, no. That’s just bratty behaviour either way you roll the dice. BUT, it was fun the second time. Regardless how you felt about IX i recommend going for a 2nd time just to take it all in.

Art is subjective, after all. We don’t always get the product we want, but we do get the product that is created. Take a step back, breathe, and relax. This movie about our beloved space wizards was NEVER going to live up to expectations, was it? BUT it might just be fun once you drop your fanboy/girl demands.

You might not like what I say, and i do say i enjoyed the flick the 2nd time around, but i hope you have a happy holidays and a mighty 2020. MTFBWY.

I look at it as the destruction of the Sith rather than the dark side. Rey lives with both regardless and as such personifies the balance “The One” was supposed to bring. I agree the guys post is clunky but I like the gist of it.

But at what cost!?

As one who loved TLJ and the risks it took, I would say the cost was caving into fan service over originality. I really liked a lot about TROS but an extension of what Rian started would have been a lot better imo.

Just rewatched TLJ and have to agree, it is pure magic and imo easily the greatest Star Wars.

That’s saying something…seriously. I rank TLJ number three (or four depending on what day you ask)

I rank it at the bottom. For me it fundamentally clashes with the story and characters Lucas envisioned. I really don’t like the meta approach to Star Wars, even if I don’t think it is a bad film when viewed in isolation.

It definitely clashes and is one of the things I do like about it.

We all have our own experiences, our own conceptions of the series, what it means and what it is. I don’t find it to clash at all - it feels perfectly Star Wars to me which is why I love it so much. A true continuation of the saga.

TROS… not so much. TROS feels a bit more like the PT to me - interesting ideas, poor execution. Ultimately extraneous.

I saw this early this morning on two hours of sleep and I haven’t had any more, so I’m definitely in a fit state to talk about this film.

I liked it.

The crawl lands like a passenger airline on an L.A. expressway and crashes into the first scene, killing everyone. I don’t know if Kylo was fighting the Knights of Ren or helping them kill some other people and I don’t think it matters. What matters is that while rooting around in the garbage behind Rian’s apartment JJ also managed to rescue the pieces of Kylo’s mask and welded them back together with his own blood. An alien tells R2 via SATA cable that Sheeve is back and has to outrun some TIE fighters, but makes them so mad that they forget they can’t go into Hyperspace for a minute, but they can’t catch the Falcon because it has gone so fast that it is on fire.

Meanwhile Rey is in the jungle with too much Force power and little by little is going insane.

Everyone decides to get out of the jungle and go to the desert to find a magical D4 or a dagger or something that leads to Sheeve. Rey gets a nice necklace from an alien and then has it immediately stolen by Kylo despite him not being there, and who is apparently jealous that someone else is giving her jewelry. They find the Horcrux after conquering Devil’s Snare and befriending the Basilisk, but it is stolen by some bad Quiddich players who also make off with its bearer, Chewbacca. Rey shoots spells at them and blows them up and is sad about killing Chewie, whom she doesn’t sense in the transport during any of this despite that being something she can do effortlessly.

Kylo flies straight at Rey with an entire spaceship and loses. This is the most normal part of the scene.

Anyway, C-3PO needs to nuke his hard drive to read some Black Speech and to do that they need a hacker, so they go to a planet where the First Order is harvesting babies to meet Poe’s old buddy Mask Lady and her puppet friend. Mask Lady has a medallion that makes the First Order act extra stupid for one scene and gives it to Poe, who immediately spends it, and this makes Hux stupid for the rest of his dumb life. It also allows our heroes to rescue Chewie, who was only dead inside, and also steal the dagger from the prop department before they could finish it.

The Falcon crashes onto Endor because it has no landing gear and is too tired at this point to hover.

Rey goes to the complex of Extremely Expensive and Devastating Distractions (E2-D2) and is distracted by an evil version of herself into rolling a 1 on her magic D4, causing it to be picked up by Kylo who then fights her. She rolls another 1, and is defeated. Leia must spend her last action on an E2-D2, and when Kylo rolls to save he is defeated as well. Rey has a free action which she uses to heal Kylo, then takes the D4 and Kylo’s second spaceship to Luke’s island, where it bursts into flames. It is unclear whether this is simply how Kylo’s spaceships are designed to land.

Luke demands that Rey leave and throws his gross, waterlogged spaceship at her.

Rey finally faces Sheeve, champing at the bit to finally kill this monster. Sheeve gleefully cackles that he wants Rey to kill him so that his consciousness may flow into her and he will be immortal, and then checks himself with a ‘shit, did I really say that out loud’ expression. This ruins his whole plan.

Meanwhile, Rose, Finn and Jannah.

Meanwhile there are many Star Destroyers and, in keeping with their namesake, each one is capable of destroying an entire planet.

Meanwhile, the Falcon visits approximately 1,138 planets on its newly installed Recruitment Drive.

Kylo reminds everyone that he is still in the movie but he has foolishly thrown away his lightsaber after hallucinating an image of his dead father. Luckily, Rey has an extra one from where Luke was throwing things at her, and distracts the editor long enough to phase between locations and give it to him. They both face Sheeve, who drains them of their will to live and then gets to work on their life force. He throws Kylo down a big pit, knowing that this will surely kill him.

There is a cavalry charge on top of a spaceship. This is the most normal part of the scene.

Meanwhile, Klaud.

I forget how Sheeve dies. I blame Klaud. Maybe Klaud did it. Maybe he did all of this. I don’t know anymore.

Rey dies. Kylo emerges from the pit and brings Rey back to life at the cost of his own. Rey, upon awakening and seeking Kylo dead, brings Kylo back to life at the cost of her own. This continues for some time. They kiss. One of them dies, I don’t care which.

At the end there is a funeral for Snap Wexley and he posthumously gets the medal intended for Chewie. There are cheers and warm embraces, all live in the light of a new day for this, the galaxy reborn. The yoke of the First Order, which has lain heavy across much of the galaxy for a few weeks, has been lifted. The Rule of Palpatine, which lasted for thirty years and eight hours, is ended forever. Bask in this light, galaxy of peace.

Rey gets a yellow lightsaber. The camera falls to the ground, where it continues recording for several seconds.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

saw it today and really enjoyed it over all …the 30 minutes of trailers and ads beforehand kind of put me in a frustrated mood though . The first 40 minutes or so had me thinking the film felt more like a coda than a finale…until Han showed up …then I was emotionally invested and Liked the way the legacy characters were handled . John Williams musical score and reprisal of OT motifs played a big part in my enjoyment . I knew he was playing on my emotions through the music and let it flow through me anyway . I teared up in more than a few places…Luke lifting the X-Wing at last , The main Star Wars theme playing when Lando brought the massive ,massive fleet of allies in which filled the entire frame . I saw the promo shot of a bunch of ships, but this was even better than I expected, also got spine tingles at the end scene at the Lars homestead . John Williams really is a genius ! other random thoughts…I really thought from the publicity images that that medallion that Zori Bliss had was going to be from the back of Threepio’s head and contain a lot of unrevealed info for the characters. This may have been touched upon elsewhere, and it made me scratch my head even in TFA…in the original movie , Han says travelling through hyperspace aint like dusting crops and without precise calculations from the navicomputer , they could bounce too near a star or hit a supernova and that would end their trip real quick . Does this no longer apply , or has there been upgrades to hyperspace tech in the 30 year interim ? At least they did show a lot of damage to the Falcon after Poe’s hyperspace skipping.Speaking of that hyperspace skip scene … was that a nod to Dark Empire and pinnacle base they flew through ? That is the way I saw it . And there was also a nice nod to Ralph Mcquarrie’s art in that sequence. Also , when the Emperor said it was not the first time he died , I interpreted that as a nice nod to Dark Empire as well . He said the same line in that comic ! Anyway , I think it was a nice end to the Skywalker saga and enjoyed all of the applause it got in the screening I attended . May The Force Be With You …Always !

The things that I think clash are the choices Rian made with regards to Luke’s reasoning for blocking his connection to the force, that a “nobody” can be a force user etc. I have posted elsewhere that I think TLJ is in my top three ep in the saga. Those decisions by Rian are the main reason for that.

So no, I don’t think Michael Bay directing TROS would have had the same result.

Everything you mention here about TROS is pretty shallow stuff, though. It pretty much conjured up these most basic, easily sympathisable character arcs/backgrounds - and just barely executed on them, as even you seem to acknowledge. These things can be in a Transformers movie. They are.

TLJ may not have garnered enough traditional “emotional investment” via character arcs and plot, but what it explored thematically and textually about Star Wars and its mythic qualities… That’s a much more interesting contribution to the saga than coming up with… more. More plot, more arcs, more, more. Just for the sake of what? A good story is in why it’s told not what happens in it. When you think about it otherwise, the only real reason to fill out these already archetypal characters with even more combinations of tropes, is to get an audience from the start of the movie to the end. Which is fine, but then why is it necessary? Being unnecessary isn’t even bad, but at that point it can and should be considered at the same level as a Transformers or Marvel film.

TLJ is the only sequel trilogy movie to justify its existence. Even a little. Even if you don’t like it. It’s actually about anything. It’s such a shame that TROS throws that all away for plot and sequence of eventful events. Maybe I’m just past the point of getting invested in a plotline. Idk. But I’d much rather have left a film with a story, than be swept up in moments that won’t stick outside of my engagement with it.

Anyway, I had fun with this movie. But it was pretty bad.

One thing that I really like about this movie is that it confirms this lorecrafting that I did in early 2018

https://originaltrilogy.com/topic/This-Snoke-Theory-is-Wrong/id/58545

While I didn’t think they’d go the Palpatine angle, they still had the core of the idea for this which makes a lot of sense out of the Sith’s nonsense rule of two.

I’m sure it’s not a particularly popular aspect of the movie with vast swaths of the fanbase, such as those who liked Anakin as the actual chosen one and those who disliked bringing back Palpatine. That probably accounts for most people, actually. But I liked it.
