4K restoration on Star Wars — Page 304

And I think a lot of younger people who grew up on the Special Editions, the prequels and the Clone Wars basically worship George Lucas, so I’ve seen a lot more people defend ha choices nowadays. Plus, the Special Editions are their Star Wars. I think this is what George was hoping for.

And that makes fan projects like Despecialized, the 4K series, and the skymaster editions so important. In a ironic, yet beautiful way, George Lucas altering the original trilogy has ensured that the originals will be preserved for years. With Lucas’s meddling, OT.com wouldn’t exist! Several films and televisions shows wouldn’t have been restored as well as they have been here. It’s really quite amazing.

I know that’s a bit of a tangent, but I think my point is clear. George got what George wanted, but we got our own amazing copies of the unaltered original trilogy and an entire community to go along with it. The special editions and the suppression of the OOT were and are a net good.

I guess they renew IP rights with each new edition and that’s the real reason behind the changes. Reminds me a bit of the recent remixed classical album releases (ex: Beatles).

Colors still look unnatural to me, at times. 😄 And what’s with this purple-green-orange abomination!?
https://thedigitalbits.com/images/articles/starwars4k_2019/sw4-sc149.sh24-missing-y-wing.jpg

Good god, that’s gotta be one of the most terrible looking frames from the 19SE I’ve seen so far. It kills me to think someone at Disney/Lucasfilm saw that and decided “yeah, looks good enough”.

I think that is actually Correct the Jump suits are Orange the original Never looked right. The Purple is wrong though yes…

You could argue that you should recreate it looking the way it did but It was a totally different color in many shots due to the Blue Screen Compositing.

When they start adding the Missing Blue Lights and so on from the Falcon cockpit It will be a nice change the Falcon interiors and cockpit interiors always lost Color.

I think now that we have been told the Original Films will never come out again… Can there be a compromise on this that we get semi specialized editions with the Really Un-likeable stuff removed?

It can be more fun to get it “Right” than to radically revise on most cases.

Eh, I don’t think anyone worships George Lucas. I just think a lot of people don’t care if it has changes or not. But, I grew up on the prequels and both Clone Wars series, (I think I might’ve first watched Genndy’s Clone Wars right before ROTS came out, though, and I only saw the first season or so of the CGI Clone Wars when it came out,) but I still prefer the OOT. I actually just got the GOUT in the mail yesterday, lol, and I have the Despecialized trilogy, 4K77 in 4K and 1080p both regraded and non-regraded, (1080p regraded’s torrent’s currently stuck, though, and unfortunately my laptop isn’t 4K,) the Silver Screen Edition of SW, the 1978 Porn Shop bootleg of SW, the regraded grindhouse of TESB, and a copy of 4K83, along with an edit of SW I made for myself personally that’s basically just scenes from Despecialized pasted onto the SSE whenever I thought DeEd had better color grading, plus 4K77’s crawl. So, you can say I very much support the originals. Maybe it’s because I’ve been conditioned by the fandom to think that way, I dunno, but, still.

There’s no contract stipulation, and there never was. It was always just a guess.

Seems like an educated guess at this point, though I’d love to be wrong.

I don’t believe anyone at Disney would sign a contract that said “you see that money on the table? You can’t use it. You have to sit on it.”

Them wanting to “respect” Lucas’ wishes, I can get, but swearing they won’t ever release it seems vindictive, even for George “MacLunkey” Lucas.

I might be late to the party on this, but I looked into the 4K versions of the Original Trilogy on Disney+, and correct me if I’m wrong, but here’s what I think they did here. They took the original Special Edition prints from 1997, remastered them in 4K, and recreated the 2004/2011 changes, as well as the notorious “Maclunkey” addition. The recreated changes look very good, especially removing Anakin’s eyebrows in Return of the Jedi. This new version also looks very good and not as dark and saturated as the DVDs and Blu-rays, but I’m still not a fan of 4K remasters of older films adding teal filters to them.

There is no teal filter. Comparing the colors to 35mm print references, they are pretty faithful to the theatrical colors, particulary the 1997 SE.

There’s nothing educated about the guess, though. It’s literally a reaction rooted in personal headcanon/fiction and nothing more. Someone asked themselves on a forum once “what could possibly prevent me from getting the product I want to purchase” and the first thing they came up with was “Lucas put a clause in the contract.” It sounded good enough, and a lot of people ran with it. But it’s not sourced to anything. It’s literally spec that people decided to accept and promote because the notion that Disney just doesn’t want to contradict Lucas’ wishes was too unbelievable for them.

Yeah, that’s exactly what happened, minus the “teal filter” thing which is absolutely not the case here.

Let’s put it this way.

When George was in charge, he never restored the OOT because he didn’t want to pay for it and because it contradicted his vision.

If Disney doesn’t do it, it’s going to be first and foremost because they don’t want to pay for it and don’t see themselves getting a good ROI. Any reasons having to do with George’s wishes will be a distant second.

He surprisingly put in money to finish the deleted scenes from the Prequel Trilogy that was released on their original DVD releases.

What I don’t understand is that if the original 1997 Special Edition prints were given a new remaster, then how come the sound mixes still sound so compressed as in the 2004/2011 releases? It’s incredibly noticeable for A New Hope.

Because image and sound mastering are separate endeavours. It appears the audio wasn’t remastered.

I mean, just because they rescanned the film doesn’t mean they didn’t reuse the 11SE mix they already had. They certainly wouldn’t recreate it.

Speaking of ‘respecting George’, what’s this I hear that George wasn’t even invited to the premiere of TROS???

They could’ve, taking the 1997 Special Edition mixes and removing such things as Luke’s Palpatine scream and adding in the “NOOOOO!” Just like everyone else, I am not fans of those additions, but I think we’d still want the films to sound spectacular as well.

Yeah, keep your expectations in check. This isn’t a Harmyfilm Restoration or Adywan Productions product.
This is an official release we’re talking about. They leave the quality to the fan projects.

Also bear in mind that this remaster was made back in 2012. It was only given a fresh coat of paint (read: new HDR color grade) this year prior to release.
