Edit: look at previous post for Empire and Jedi.

One day we will have properly restored versions of the Original Unaltered Trilogy (OUT); or 1977, 1980, 1983 Theatrical released versions (Like 4K77,4K80 and 4K83); including Prequels. So that future generations can enjoy these historic films that changed cinema forever.

:\ I thought the OT couldn’t look uglier than on dvd/blu-ray, but Disney somehow succeded in making it look even worse!

Raw special effect, not properly lit:

Paint it green! 😛

Here brightness is so high you can see this special effect’s corners:

Contrast is so bland you can see Luke’s hair and face don’t cast natural shadows under strong and direct sunlight:

Green-headed Leia! 😄

P.S.: I think I’ll stick with Harmy’s versions 😛

You’re welcome. Yea I linked them out of order because moonization uploaded them in reverse order throughout the day.

I enjoyed the article about doubleofive’s comparision. Also the Video from 13las.

Yea They tried to match the color timing of all the saga films by what I’ve heard. If I remember the the original release of the 97SE (what these are sourced from) had contrast issues as well.
This is the first tine since the 97 release that an official release of the OT has had an “almost” correct color timing. Not great but better then the old 2004 master.

Also take in consideration that moonization’s HDR colors aren´t properly tone maped so they don’t look correct “as intended”. Even the Blu-ray footage looks oversaturated with raised black levels in his comparisons.

Yeah, I was gonna say, none of those screencaps look like what I see when I watch either the 2004/2011 or 2019 masters.

Yep. No need for the OOT ever to surface when it’s all one perfect saga after all…

Don’t know how this guy did his captures, but these screenshots don’t look anything like the actual films. Just one example, no green:

Leia’s hair isn’t green either for the D+ version. The shot looks perfectly natural.

😦 I hope you don’t mean me, I just took them from moonization’s videos. Glad I was wrong with their actual look, though. Still I wonder how the first screenshot of the rock in space actually looks like.

No, it’s not you. It’s the videos, which don’t look like they’re supposed to. Not that there aren’t wonky shots in the new master color wise, but it’s faithful to the theatrical look, and mostly a huge step up from the bluray. Here’s the space shot:

Yeah, they may not be perfect, but they are a massive step in the right direction (regarding color) from every previous release since 2004. I’ll admit it actually goes a long way to healing old wounds, so to speak. Having the fan-made 4K series more than 2/3 done along with official versions that actually look decent again (even if they’re not my preferred versions of the OT), as well as some pretty great new content in recent years has moved my “love/hate” opinion of Lucasfilm a bit further towards the “love” column. If they’d just suck it up and officially release reasonably competent 4K versions of the OOT all would be forgiven at this point.

Yeah, I agree that overall the new versions are vastly superior to the Blu-rays. There might be a few issues still here and there, but overall the color is really great. Just make sure, if you’re watching the films in HDR, that you’re watching them in Dolby Vision instead of HDR10 (HDR10 is trash, and will screw with the colors). Or if you’re watching tone-mapped SDR versions, ensure that they’re properly tone-mapped (otherwise you’ll get the incorrect color shifts as illustrated in some of the stills above).

Author

Too bad my TV only supports HDR10. 😦 Still think it looks pretty good overall though, I haven’t noticed them looking drastically different than most of the screenshots here, minus the ones that aren’t tonemapped correctly.

I just got my first 4K HDR tv (65 inch 2019 TCL 6 series) and to be honest I haven’t spent enough time to really tell the difference between the HDR formats. If there was somehow a comparison mode, that would be useful.

I’m frustrated tho that Disney+ doesn’t always opt for Dolby Vision and sometimes just selects HDR10.

Disney+ does certainly have some issues with their UI to work out.

The new Disney+ versions look NOTHING like those captures. whoever captured those really screwed up.

The 4k really does have noticeable more detail even downscaled to 1080p and compared to Blu-Ray. Hopefully color correction and other fixes will make them more palatable. Who knows if the inevitable UHD Blu-Ray release will be exactly the same as the streaming release.

I’ve been quickly partly-Despecialising and tonemapping down to SDR the 4K Disney Plus releases for my own personal use in a marathon very soon. Most shots look noticeably sharper in this new master than the Bluray, and even with only the ~20gb streaming versions of the 4K releases available, there are noticeably fewer compression artifacts during motion. They’re a great version of the films (as a base for projects which remove Lucas’ worst ideas for changes, of course).

Except for this shot. Ignore the colours, it’s my own tonemapping of the HDR down to SDR for my TV, which is nowhere close to being properly calibrated, so they’ll look off on anything which is. The point is it’s blurry and looks like it’s been upscaled. Lots of detail is missing. I included part of the wipe in the comparison because I believe this might give us evidence that this is what this shot actually looks like in the negative/how it potentially looked in 1997. The sharp detail seems to wipe in slightly behind the main wipe. See the edge of the bunch of air ducts (?) on the centre-left; the left side is blurry but the right is sharp, and then in the next frame the whole thing is sharp. I think the sharp version of this shot is an alteration made for the 2004 master, when they redid the landspeeder. It seems what’s happened for this release is they’ve just composited the 2004 onwards landspeeder onto the blurry version of this shot from 1997 (and shifted the landspeeder to the left right slightly).

So for anyone like me who enjoys some of the Mos Eisley changes, you’d probably want to grab this shot from the Bluray.

What’s really weird though is that the creatures look a lot sharper in the D+ version than the Blu-ray. I think you’re right about them using the 1997 version of the buildings and environment, but maybe in the Blu-ray they applied a strong temporal sharpening filter on it so that the stationary objects became super sharp. This would lead to the moving creatures losing detail to blur.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Interesting observation. If I’m reading this right, this makes a lot of sense. There are two wipes to 97SE changes that were redone for HD Branch, this and Jabba. Those wipes were done in 97 optically, wiping from the original-negative live-action shots to the 2K film outs and then cut into the negative. So when redoing those shots, they’d have to make a CG wipe that closely follows the optical wipe that transitions to the new version of the shot. And to do it for the 4K, they’d have to do it again. The Jabba wipe we’ve been looking at, it’s improved somewhat in the 4K (97 Jabba’s tail is less visible). This would seem to be something similar, where the original wipe is quickly followed by an additional wipe to the new shot.

You’re also correct in saying the landspeeder was shifted (to the right, I corrected TDB), but the weird thing is that the left edge of the speeder is in the same position. It’s been stretched a little? Also don’t forget the timing on all of the creatures were redone too, and half of them were erased from the 97SE. My feeling is that they rebuilt the shot for HD with a lot of sharpening, then rebuilt it again in 4K from the “original” negative, but cut out elements from the HD they didn’t want to rebuild (the speeder).

Idk if it’s that they stretched the speed, but the fact that they re- composited the old 2004 speeder on the slightly cropped 4k D+ version. But yes it is the 1997 background.
