The Mandalorian - a general discussion thread - * SPOILERS * — Page 5

I was curious about the Jawa eyes last night. Do we know of those are their actual eyes or like goggles? If the former, maybe different tribes or ethnic groups of Jawas have different eye colors just as humans do. If they’re goggles, maybe there is something about Arvala-7’s star that makes them need different type of eye protection. I really loved all the Jawa interaction in this episode. Now I totally understand why Luke shoos them away from his landspeeder!

That’s so interesting about Herzog. It is cool to get his perspective on the production, and I totally agree with him. I think they struck gold with the baby Yoda idea. Cuter and more “Star Wars” than just a real baby, plus none of the actual logistical problems filming with a real baby would be.

Yeah I’m not sure why the red eyes myself, other than maybe to visually tell the viewer that these aren’t the Jawas you’re looking for, from Tatooine.
Not really a big issue for me nonetheless. I can easily imagine some of them can conjure up a space adventure to another planet and that drier planets are preferable.
Does make me wonder out of nonsensical curiousity, do they build sandcrawlers? Seems so, given the cramped dimensions inside. Or stolen and retrofitted to their liking.

In Legends, the Sandcrawlers were abandoned on Tatooine by a mining corporation and the Jawas refurbished them. I have no idea if there’s a canon backstory yet.

Yeah now that I’m starting to understand the vibe of the show I’m pretty into it. There’s not much in the way of story but that’s not a bad thing. This was a very fun, half hour western adventure. And it still looks/sounds great.

It looks much better, as if someone actually knew what to do with a camera this time around. So while I consider the first episode to be a complete failure still, the second episode is good. It addresses pretty much all my complaints, so if we get more episodes like this one, I’m on board.

And now that we got a properly paced episode, I can say I do like how compact the show is, so even though that recent one is the very definition of filler in most ways, it’s pleasantly brisk.

Also: good puppet, very glad it’s not that CGI abomination again.

Herzog agrees that the baby Yoda puppet is remarkable: in an interview he described it as “heartbreakingly beautiful,” and at some point during filming when Filoni and Favreau tried to shoot an extra take of a scene with baby Yoda without the puppet so that they’d have the option to use CGI, Herzog called them “cowards” and accused them of having no faith in their own creation (I saw this in a screenshot from a magazine article on Reddit, I’m having trouble tracking it down again).

Al things considered, being called ‘a coward’ by Werner Herzog shouldn’t be much of an insult to most people. “No, Werner, we’re not planning on physically launching people into space to get that shot. Yes, we totally are cowards for not doing so.”

When Kuiil asks about what happened against the Rhino, the Mandalorian says he has no idea. I really like the idea that the Force isn’t known everywhere, if that’s what he was referencing. Did he also not realize the baby was helping him?

On a backwater world with little to no contact with the greater galaxy sure. But the Jedi were guardians of the Republic for over a thousand generations. The Mandalorians themselves have clashed with the Jedi a number of times in their history.

I think he knows it was the baby, he’s just having a hard time coming to grips with just how powerful the infant apparently is.

I like that aspect myself. The Mandalorian character, I assume, is similarly like Han Solo; “Kid, I’ve flown from one side of this galaxy to the other. I’ve seen a lot of strange stuff, but I’ve never seen anything to make me believe there’s one all-powerful Force controlling everything. There’s no mystical energy field that controls my destiny. It’s all a lot of simple tricks and nonsense.” The only prominent Force-sensitives are Luke and Leia, and I’m sure they’re not freely using the Force as a circus trick. Until Luke actively creates his new Jedi Order, I imagine most of the galaxy is still traumatized to continue to shield their eyes from any one that claims some magical power exists. That requires a ton of deprogramming from the Imperial propaganda.

A little confused by your question though. Like at the end? I’m pretty sure he knows the baby had helped stop that beast. He didn’t seem to acknowledge that the baby was trying to help, I assume, heal his wound earlier in the episode, if that’s what you mean. At the end, when he’s trying to talk with Kuiil, I think he just couldn’t find the proper words to fully describe the event without sounding like a lunatic.

JEDIT: Tobar pretty much said what I was going to say in regard to the question.

While that’s true on some levels, the main saga doesn’t have Mandalorians clashing with Jedi, and the KOTOR series took place 3,000 years before the rise of Vader. Within the KOTOR story itself, the Mandalorians have been broken up before and have had to have new leaders (new Mandolore so to speak). And from what I understand, Darth Maul has been such leader as well? Not completely sure, but regardless, that clan of tribal warriors isn’t quite as scholarly as the more sacred and carefully guarded Jedi history. Basically, so much history must be butchered, perhaps even sabotaged from within and externally. Plus, it’s rather vague to say how this new character got into this clan, and what the requirements are.

in the first episode , he is said to be a “foundling” , so I am guessing he was adopted into the Mandalorian culture around the time of the Clone Wars . The Clone Wars animated series by Filoni as well as Rebels , also dive deep into Mandalorian history and lore .

This is basically confirmed by the description on the back of the Offworld Jawa action figure, which was the first leak involving their appearance in the show if I’m not mistaken.

Ships traveling to and from Tatooine have resulted in some Jawas leaving their desert home-world. Those that do arrive on new planets continue their old habits in their new surroundings, but their obsessive need for technology still drives them.

As for the Sandcrawlers, I’m pretty sure it’s officially been said that they’re repurposed mining vehicles. So it’s totally not out of the question to assume that the mining operation that manufactured and subsequently abandoned the Sandcrawlers on Tatooine did the same exact thing on various other planets. It seems like lazy writing at first but it’s actually pretty effective worldbuilding once you think about it.

I just watched it again and you’re right. He knows the baby is helping him with the rhino animal. I didn’t catch that the first time. I agree that he just has no way to explain what he saw during the fight. I do think, however, that he had no idea the baby was trying to heal that cut. It seems like he was just putting it back in the pod because he’s super protective of it. He takes it everywhere. He doesn’t even leave it with Kuiil when he goes to get the egg.

No different than abandoned 747s, super tankers, or mining trucks here on Earth. Wherever they are in the world and whoever may have used them, they look the same.

A lot different since Earth is just one planet and the galaxy has probably millions of planets with even more vehicles.

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

I’m aware of the spatial difference. My point was how the same vehicle could be in several places and abandoned by different companies, yet still be salvaged and used.

I mean, the way people jump from planet to planet all the time, it really feels like a planet is just a different continent.

After being beaten and battered by prequel hate, I promise not to be that to the next generation.

Different companies makes plenty of sense, but it could really even be the same company. In the first Knights of the Old Republic game, the Tatooine sandcrawlers were shown being operated by the Czerka Corporation, which had a presence on plenty of other planets throughout the series. If one mining company goes bust in this universe, that could potentially leave identical sandcrawlers on any number of planets where they had business.

Yeah but coming up with potential explanations for things aren’t as fun as complaining about literally everything possible.

The music is very uneven. Sometimes it’s great, other times it’s too cheesy. The show needed a Firefly soundtrack, but instead got half a cheap Marvel soundtrack.

But other than that, it’s great! I have no other complaints at all!

BUT I DO HAVE QUESTIONS

  • How did the Imperial Remnant know about Yadpole?
  • How did Yadpole come to be in an isolated fortress of goons?
  • How do those tracking devices work? I get that they’re meant to evoke divining rods, but how do they work?
  • Was Yaddle absent from the council during AOTC & ROTS because she was on maternity leave?

How can you kill such a giant rhino beast with such a small knife ?

Han: Hey Lando! You kept your promise, right? Not a scratch?
Lando: Well, what’s left of her isn’t scratched. All the scratched parts got knocked off along the way.
Han (exasperated): Knocked off?!

I assumed the knife must have had some kind of poison.

Man, after a busy weekend working I finally sat down to watch episode 2 last night. What an episode! I’m am 100% hooked and totally onboard for the ride with this show. It’s everything I want out of a Star Wars bounty hunter! I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about the Yadpole, but I am very much digging the “Lone Wolf and Cub” approach they’ve taken. It’s so good.

And the action sequence with the sand crawler was just magnificent! I honestly don’t have a single criticism of this episode. I loved it! And yeah, I assumed the knife had to be poisoned too.

🤣😂🤣 Feel you on that one, I’m really enjoying this series and that baby Yoda idea opens so many possibilities not touched on before. 👍

I watched the first 2 episodes at my nephew’s apartment the other day. I enjoyed them — the relaxed pace was different, but nice.

I’m amazed baby Yoda, sorry - YADPOLE, was a puppet! Amazing. No wonder he was so cute. 😉

I am really looking forward to any behind-the-scenes they do on the effects work on this. I’ve heard Kuiil referenced as being motion-captured, but that sure looks like a physical costume. And the Yadpole is so, so likelike. It’s amazing.

I believe I read that Kuiil was portrayed on set by a small woman wearing an animatronic mask which was controlled via facial motion capture on Nick Nolte. Just going off some random article though, no solid proof on that.
