Small details that took you FOREVER to notice in the Star Wars films — Page 10

Never noticed it before today on ROTJ:

  1. when Han & Co enter the shield generator back entrance, they leave a Rebel disguised as a Scout trooper behind.
  2. when we later see the wide shot of the Rebels captured by the Imperials, the disguised Rebel is standing next to the main group, still wearing the Scout Trooper uniform, but sans his helmet. He has grey hair and a rather mighty moustache.

One popular theory has it that the bearded rebel at Endor is Captain Rex from the TV shows.

I had a hard time noticing the wires at the Jawa droid sale(especially the long one that goes up from the black droid to the top of the screen), i always imagined they were antennas, but they were probably support cables.
Why George didn’t remove them completely in the Special Editions eludes me.

It’s funny because the whole point of this wide shot was to frame everybody 😃 (and yep the PT has many good shots)

Noticed only when someone pointed it out to me a few years ago: the off screen guy telling Bib Fortuna about Luke “It’s a Sith !”.

I can’t take credit for this as it technically wasn’t something I noticed, but did some digging today after listening to Lucas talk about experimental films he was interested in and he mentioned being a producer for the Godfrey Reggio film Powaqqatsi. From there I stumbled upon this article: http://outlawvern.com/2016/01/14/powaqqatsi/ which by the end mentions a connection I never would have made alone…

Phillip Glass - Serra Pelada
John Williams - Augie’s Great Municipal Band and End Credits

"…I’m not saying there is a rough cut of THE PHANTOM MENACE entirely set to Philip Glass temp music. Actually I am saying that. That is what I’m saying. Or at least maybe they were both influenced by music from the same culture."

I’ve seen someone make that connection before. I highly doubt he’d have temp scored the entire film to any one non-Williams composer though, and especially not Philip Glass because the styles are so different. Likely just that one cue.

Oh even the comments under both videos make the link, I agree it was likely just for that scene, but can we be a little less pedantic and enjoy the trivia?

Not trying to be pedantic. It’s fun trivia but in my mind, if you’re going on a game of ‘guess the temp score,’ why stop after just one cue?

I often wonder what some of the other things Lucas might have used for temp score. As far as I know, the only documentation of temp score is on the original SW (where Rinzler and other writers have mentioned quite a few cues). I seem to recall hearing about Lucas using a piece of classical music or something for the immolation in ROTS but I don’t remember. And there’s talk that he also used some of the LOTR score for that film as well but I don’t know if it’s been confirmed.

There’s the obvious of course: Gustav Holst - Mars

For anyone who has never looked into the use of temp score in any Star Wars this is very much worth its own watch as well.

Well there is a rough cut of the new ending for ROTJ that used a temp track which Williams pretty much copied

and this is the original temp track that was used

Wow, that’s amazing to see. Where did you get that video from?

There’s a channel called Sideways that talks about this kind of thing too, in how it annoys the academics in music to hear people want to be come film score composers.

Here’s a great video that gives even more examples. The Dune Sea was inspired by Tchaikovsky for one.

“Heroes come in all sizes, and you don’t have to be a giant hero. You can be a very small hero. It’s just as important to understand that accepting self-responsibility for the things you do, having good manners, caring about other people - these are heroic acts. Everybody has the choice of being a hero or not being a hero every day of their lives.” - George Lucas

Stravinsky, rather.

Oops. Yes. I also always saw the Seven Samuari theme as more similar to the Main Theme or maybe it is The Imperial March.

in The Empire Strikes Back , as Han is getting ready to go search for Luke , in Echo Base , on the wall of the stables …is that …is that …Taun-taun shit !?

It’s damage from Wampa attack, there are slashed barrels and a dead Tauntaun. It’s interesting to see that the scene basically works but if you look at it, the stables are a complete mess for no reason.

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

Something that took me years to notize is that there is at least one Jedi Knight that fights with two lightsabers in the arena battle in Episode 2. You can spot him in multiple shots in the background.

I watched Return Of The Jedi last night and caught something that I never gave much thought …when the Emperor tells Vader to go to the sanctuary moon and wait for Skywalker , he does not arrive on the moon until after nightfall .In the scene right after Vader has his talk with Palps ,the rebels land on Endor and a full day passes into night before Luke goes off to meet Vader . Was there that much travel time between Death Star 2 and Endor via shuttle ? Or did Vader go off and meditate for a while before departing ? I guess this could be open to a lot of speculation .

Also Luke says to Leia “Vader’s here - on this moon…” when Vader hasn’t landed yet.

Maybe there are several Vader clones and that’s what TROS will reveal…
