Mandalorian is “out there” in 4K HDR, so the drm has clearly been broken on day one, so I think for those of us who won’t get D+ until 2021 (and believe me, if I could get it now, I’d be the first in line), someone will put the new masters out as well.

I am honestly very surprised the entire 4K saga hasn’t been circulated yet. I’m wondering if the pirates in question simply don’t know there’s a difference and haven’t bothered (i.e. “we already did all this back in 2011 what’s the point”) or what.

edit: missed Ash’s post from upthread that explains exactly why, haha. Sorry Ash!

4K streaming? Man, no wonder my laptop kept lagging trying to play it.

I wonder if caps-a-holic or DvD active have new comparisons yet?

One day we will have properly restored versions of the Original Unaltered Trilogy (OUT); or 1977, 1980, 1983 Theatrical released versions (Like 4K77,4K80 and 4K83); including Prequels. So that future generations can enjoy these historic films that changed cinema forever.

DVDactive is no longer a thing. Caps-a-holic has no new picture comparisons yet.

Just noticed that the placeholder card for Solo says that it will be available in DolbyVision (the 4K disc only has HDR10). I can’t imagine they’d print another run of discs so soon, so I’m guessing D+ will be the only place to see Solo in DV for the foreseeable future.

Shaw’s eyebrows look different to me, but that might just be the colors.

JEDIT: They’re totally different, and much much more seamless.

Wow, you’re right.

Oh boy, I’m so anxious to see this new remaster. Screenshots of the removed eyebrows shots, please?

Wow, that’s super desaturated.

I’m not free to do screen caps at the moment but I’ll try to later.

Seems like most redone 2004/11 changes are no better or worse, with some being a bit better and some being a bit worse.

My stance on revising fan edits.

Finally, some 4K screencaps of THE PHANTOM MENACE, without the HDR grade. Looks super DNR’d, just like the Blu-ray.

Ya got any picture contrast to go with it?

Like I said, WITHOUT the HDR grade, thus it looks flat and desaturated (similar to a LOG image). If someone wants to do an HDR to SDR conversion, please be my guest.

I’m confused by the HDR thing fairly frequently - I don’t have any 4K displays in my house, although I do have an HDR-capable TV, but only a few apps/games have tried to kick the HDR on (Fleabag on Amazon automatically shifted over to HDR for season 2, and I found it didn’t look as good, honestly. It might have just been that title wasn’t converted/applied well). I understand that there are separate tags/flags that are sent along with the picture info that tell the tv what color range and values to apply to the image, so my understanding (and this is the part where I want someone to please pick this apart and explain it to me, haha) is that when the stream is fast enough to make 4K HDR viable, it switches over from the SDR file to this 4K file. This 4K file is now basically as flat as possible because the HDR tags/flags need to be applied to it, and those tags will change on a scene to scene basis.

but the 1080p file that I’m getting when I watch any of the Star Wars movies - those files are sourced from the same 4K master. Is the primary difference that their color grading isn’t sent along as additional picture information, but baked into the file/stream itself?

And while HDR colors/contrast should have more pop, depth, and vibrancy, there should be a general similarity between what it was graded to look like at 2K/1080p, and what it looks like in 4K, right? Like you shouldn’t go from one to the other and have the other look markedly different in terms of color temperature and contrast levels beyond the basic advantages that the expanded range will provide?

When I bring up Attack of the Clones in 1080p, it doesn’t look the same as my blu-ray. When I bring up Star Wars, it DEFINITELY doesn’t look the same as my blu-ray. That’s how it’s supposed to be even at standard def, correct?

You think it’s seamless, take a closer look at when Luke takes the helmet off and you see them in shadow.

I know in your most recent video you explained why Despecialized won’t be progressing very much for now, but has this Disney+ business changed that at all?

Yes, it doesn’t look like that because the stream applies the HDR grade. What we’re looking at here is the raw data of the stream, without the tone mapping curve, saturation, or more simply put: the HDR grade.

The screenshots are for detail’s sake, not color accuracy.

If you can get rid of the HDR grade on the inevitable 4KBD release, the log-style video should be really helpful for those trying to regrade.

Oh definitely. As a colorist, it’s always best to work with a flat image to be able to extract all the dynamic range, colors, etc.

Can that be done? And would it yield a 10 or even 12 bit image? That would be awesome!
As for whether this changes anything for Despecialized, yes, the change is that I will now definitely be waiting for the 4K Blu-Ray or at least a full bitrate 4k web-dl as a source.

If you’re asking if it’s possible to extract the flat image? Yes. The HDR grade is stored as metadata on UHD discs, so you can easily retrieve the flat image. As for the bit depth, I believe they’re all 10bit video files.

That’s really interesting. So what your saying is that there is a single video file with flat colours, then depending on what sort of display and resolution your TV has determines which grade metadata is applied to the video?

As someone that’s worked with the 4K Blu-ray of Solo, yes you can get a 10 bit flat image. It allows for a ton more flexibility in grading. There are ways of chroma upsampling and flattening footage yourself which I’ve had to learn for regrading the prequels, but having the real thing will always be better.

Hence, I’m definitely waiting for the 4K Blu-rays to work with for my prequel regrades.

Having looked at the 1997 reference williarob shared in the past in some detail, it is clear, that the colorist clearly used the 1997 SE as a color reference for the OT. It’s also pretty obvious, that the 1997 SE prints are not as vibrant as for example a technicolor print.
