Has anyone managed to confirm the erasing of matte boxes around ships and stabilization of matte paintings/background VFX elements?

Jeez. Everyone is waiting for some miraculous OOT release and they’re doing THIS?
…Wait is Vader’s red/green suit control button been changed to red/blue like in ESB? Weird thing to notice… but y’know.
Since anyone with a Disney+ subscription can now stream the movies in 4k hdr whenever they want, I have to wonder if Disney isn’t planning on restoring the OOT to include in the UHD disc package just so they can give fans a selling point other than simply “the same exact thing you can stream on D+ … but with better compression and on a disc!”

That certainly appeared to be the case when I watched ANH in full this morning, but I didn’t get all forensic about it. Played at normal speed, I saw no matte boxes and found it legitimately difficult to find the edges of matte paintings.
I mean, I haven’t seen what they have, but I’d be shocked to my core if it was anything other than a blown up Blu-ray transfer.
PREPARE TO BE SHOCKED! 😃

I think you sentence is more appropriately ended there.

I know I’m certainly going to wait for a steep price drop before even thinking about the disc set if it only includes the D+ cuts. I’d have probably bought it pretty soon after release of D+ had had the 2011 versions, but now I’m in no rush. So thank you Disney, I guess?
I’m curious how the other films fare. DNR on TPM? Teal tint on AOTC? Wipe or hard cut in ROTS?

We’re speculating on that very thing in the Star Wars Legacy thread right now, haha.

Oh hey, the DNR on TPM question is a good one. I haven’t seen anything about that yet anywhere (obviously I’m not able to do my own lookthru here at work. I have JUST enough time to hawk a couple messageboards inbetween doing my actual job, LOL)
It’s weird to see a SE presentation look so… filmic. It honestly looks like 4K77 more than the BluRay.

IIRC the Lowry/Reliance scan was made from the Special Edition negatives, and then had the 2011 blu-ray changes applied to it (as well as the MacLunkey and other minor fixes) before being finished. So if it looks more filmic, it’s probably due to that.

Yeah I’m curious about the treatment the prequels got. Probably going to surf through later tonight.

I watched the first ten minutes of Clones to see what the upscale looked like. At a glance it’s a little more muted and has richer shadows/depth than the BD, which tracks with the HDR. Since I’ve already watched the PT for my TROS lead-up I probably won’t want to watch any of them all the way through for at least six months, but what I saw seemed like an improvement.

Until the physical media releases some point next year, we can’t use these for fanedits, can we?
ROTS has the wipe.

The Disney+ frame looks the best to me, but I am completely unqualified to properly evaluate.
The Despecialized will continue to be my prefered, because I just can’t stand the special edition changes. I don’t need to see Jedi Rocks any clearer.
Yeah I skimmed through the first several scenes of AotC this morning specifically to see if there was still a green/teal tint, and it appears to be gone. Coruscant’s skies actually look blue and there are some deep reds during the speeder chase.
I seem to recall seeing a screenshot comparison back in 2011 where one of the Twi’leks standing behind Padme when she arrives at Palpatine’s office is blue in one version and green in the other, so it would be interesting to compare them yet again with this new transfer.
Haven’t checked out TPM or RotS yet.
Oops, I seem to have signed in to the wrong account 😁
Looks greenish to me.

Yeah, it looks the best to me too but by a surprisingly small margin considering that both 4K77 and DeEd are scanned from theatrical prints and DeEd is 720p.
But hopefully soon, someone will post some screens of the highest bit rate 4K stream from D+, so we can see properly.
Has anyone been able to determine if the wacky editing changes from the Attack of the Clones Blu-Ray are still there?

I was actually trying to remember what the changes were when I was watching the first few scenes this morning. All I remember is something got switched around when they fly through the power couplings and also the scene where Dooku escapes into space is rearranged as well.
Maybe someone can do a quick comparison between the bd and the D+ to see if those scenes have been changed yet again.

The best comparison will come if/when the DRM gets cracked and the original source streams become available.
Something I’m curious about is if Disney+ has multiple versions of any film. The best way to check in my mind would be to see what they have for Avatar.
