What? The emperor is the sole reason for Anakin turning and serving the Empire, what else are you guys suggesting other than “strongly disagree”.Also every sith ever overthrow and betray each other, usually in for continuous serving the dark but neverteless. In addition he is propechied literally and blatant several times to destroy the sith, surely this must have crossed his mind every now and then wouldnt you think?

Watching this “your mother” scene several times lately and noticed something that hadn’t dawned on me before:

Vader: conduct your search and bring his companions to me

Then no search is ever shown. It doesn’t affect the plot. Just a throw away line that doesn’t matter. Shame.

There is no need to show the search, we know it’s happening, and it would just slow down the movie.
And it is not a throw away line. It gives the audience information that Vader is not effected by Luke’s presence, he is still cold and calculating, and we need to see Luke reaction as he realizes that.

I certainly agree with you about it showing Vader is still cold and calculating. I’m not suggesting the line be cut.

But I DO think it could’ve been worked into the plot to build some tension somehow. The empire now knows there are possibly more rebels on the forest moon. So Han and company could’ve been hiding from some troopers on their way to the shield generator. At the very least, it could’ve added a nice little beat in between scenes. If done well, it wouldn’t really slow the movie down at all…it would add some tension that is lacking at this point in the movie. It would show that the rebels don’t have it made nearly as easy the movie implies (ex: Ewok steals speeder, “It’s over commander”, etc)

I’ve been experimenting with trimming “I must obey my master!” while also incorporating Sir Ridley’s “Your mother once thought as you do” (albeit slowed-down). What prevented me from deleting “You don’t know the power of the Dark Side” was both Vader’s turn and making sure that Luke’s follow-up line made sense. The edit is a bit rough, but I’m sure Ady can do better working in the 5.1 mix.

Here it is.

The “I must obey my master!” line you deleted is very important. It tells the audience Vader’s relation to the Emperor, as it tells a lot about the Sith master-apprentice relationship.
Deleting it is a huge mistake.

Strong disagree on this one.

Indeed. Why would Vader be planning to overthrow the Emperor in the previous movie?

Vader lacks the courage to attempt to overthrow the Emperor on his own. He’s stuck being his lackey since Luke refused to join him.

Yes, Vader has the drive to overthrow the Emperor, as every Sith apprentice does, but Vader is convinced that he can’t do it alone, so if Luke does not join him, he must obey his master, if he wants to stay alive, because that is the Sith way.
The other important thing is that with this line Vader passed the burden of the choice to Luke, that Luke has to make right here.

All this is EU crap. That line makes Vader seem weak and with no agency in the movie. It’s why Vader kinda sucks in ROTJ compared to ANH/ESB, at least until he brings Luke to the Emperor.

I’m fine with Vader being more cavalier about overthrowing the Emperor and whatnot when he’s far away, but at the same time more subservient to Palpatine when he’s in his “presence” or whatever.

Yeah, it makes him feel like a real person underneath the suit. Let’s look at the script!

Vader and Luke are left standing alone in the oddly tranquil beauty of the place. The sounds of the forest filter in upon them.

VADER: The Emperor has been expecting you.
LUKE: I know, father.
VADER: So, you have accepted the truth.
LUKE: I’ve accepted the truth that you were once Anakin Skywalker, my father.
VADER (turning to face him): That name no longer has any meaning for me.

LUKE: It is the name of your true self. You’ve only forgotten. I know there is good in you. The Emperor hasn’t driven it from you fully. That is why you couldn’t destroy me. That’s why you won’t bring me to your Emperor now.

Vader is pushing for Luke to join the Sith, because Lucas hasn’t invented the Rule of Two yet. Luke is trying to remind Vader of his past as a good-guy, because he wants him to forsake the Empire and join the Rebellion. Vader doesn’t want to talk about that, so he changes the subject.

Vader looks down from Luke to the lightsaber in his own black- gloved hand. He seems to ponder Luke’s words.

VADER (indicating lightsaber): I see you have constructed a new lightsaber.

Vader ignites the lightsaber and holds it to examine its humming, brilliant blade.

VADER: Your skills are complete. Indeed, you are powerful, as the Emperor has foreseen.

He also takes a moment to talk-up his boss as an all-powerful (and thus irresistible) wizard. How can Luke say no to that?

They stand for a moment, the Vader extinguishes the lightsaber.

LUKE: Come with me.
VADER: Obi-Wan once thought as you do.

Luke steps close to Vader, then stops. Vader is still.

Luke is pretty sure he’s getting through to him - Vader brought up Obi-Wan! His old friend! Remember the good old days when you were a good-guy?

VADER: You don’t know the power of the dark side. I must obey my master.
LUKE: I will not turn…and you’ll be forced to kill me.
VADER: If that is your destiny.
LUKE: Search your feelings, father. You can’t do this. I feel the conflict within you. Let go of your hate.
VADER: It is too late for me, son. The Emperor will show you the true nature of the Force. He is your master now.

Vader, however, wants Luke to understand that, as far as he’s ever seen, there is no other option. He’s very conflicted, but what can he do? The Emperor sees all, can do all, etc. Vader doesn’t want to die, and he doesn’t want Luke to die. The only way to not die is to obey the Emperor.

Vader signals to some distant stormtroopers. He and Luke stand staring at one another for a long moment.

LUKE: Then my father is truly dead.

Anyway, my point is that this line is an essential part of Vader’s journey. It shows that he’s no longer actually committed to the Empire or even the Emperor, he just sees no other option. He is in despair, without hope, particularly since he’s pretty sure his only child (that he knows of) is committing suicide by trying to defy the Emperor. It demonstrates that Luke is right about him, he just doesn’t see a way out.

To be fair, it’s not EU, it’s prequel stuff. Ady has said that the prequels have no bearing on his edits though.

Personally, I wouldn’t want to see that line go. One can argue that it weakens Vader, but we already know Vader is powerful. If he’s so afraid of the Emperor, it must mean that the emperor is that much more powerful. Besides, the more Vader seems thoroughly whipped by the emperor, the more impactful it is when he gets the upper hand on him in the end.

The line is fine … If anything that could be trimmed, is the dialogue where Vader said “yes master” a half dozen times in a short scene. It’s like … really over done to be honest.

“Because you are a PalpaWalker?”

Here’s my take on the “Must obey” line…
Vader NEEDS Luke to overthrow the Emperor. The Emperor’s hold on Vader is too strong. But, if Luke kills the Emperor, then the two could “rule the galaxy as father and son.” and Vader’s dark hold on Luke would be as strong as the Emperor’s was on him.
This stems from their confrontation in ESB. He’s urging Luke to do what he can’t.

[JEDIT] i may be misremembering how/when that line is used. it’s been awhile since i last saw rotj. but.

Shortland Street 😃 A refreshing change from the main awful Aussie soaps on UK tv at the time - well in the Kiwis / Vowel Manglers 😉

I remember seeing Tem for the first time on a short-lived TV series in NZ called Gloss. Another Kiwi in this forum (living in Australia, funnily enough)… 😉

And I still get a laugh out of Tem sounding like a Pakistani in the Martin Campbell directed Vertical Limit which starred Chris O’Donnell, Scott Glenn and the late Bill Paxton. Also recall the Harrison Ford and Anne Heche film Six Days, Seven Nights set in Tahiti where Tem, Cliff Curtis and Danny Trejo were playing pirates and seeing Tem and Cliff speaking Maori to each other had me wondering did Machete even understand what they were saying?! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

“Did you know, the word ‘gullible’ is not in the dictionary?! Look it up.”

Any chance we will see a new death star explosion that shows debris going towards moons planet?

Nah, I think the original looks great.

Either way, I love me some practical explosions over the CGI explosions in the ST.

Hear me out on this one.

R2-D2 is basically a sentient Swiss Army knife. We see him use all sorts of appendages, sometimes for plot purposes, sometimes for the sake of a quick gag (fire extinguisher, anybody?).

When R2-D2 is serving drinks on the sail barge, they missed an obvious opportunity to depict him with a corkscrew attachment, or at the very least a bottle-opener for someone to crack open a cold one on.

Any chance of a one-second cutaway during the sail barge sequence to correct this glaring omission?

Tbh, that sounds like it would be right out if space balls or any spoof rather than a real SW movie and considering how close ROTJ already is to being one. I don’t think adding more things like this would improve the issue.

Sorry for the double post - I’m curious, will you be using any of the “4K” (because upscale) masters for enhancing the color grade, or are you carrying on as before?

To be honest, I prefer the CGI explosions, 'cause they look much more modern and realistic compared to the OT.

The unfortunate reality of the Star Wars prequel and Disney trilogies is that they will always be around. Forever. They will never go away. It can never be undone.

I also prefer to be referred to as “TNT”, not “Freezing”.

but, the explosions in the OT literally are the most realistic possible explosions ? because they’re real ??

Agreed.
Although, I find that there are a few “lackluster” explosions in the OT. I think most of them are shots in space. After the initial explosion, the opacity seems to just drop off. It’s by no means terrible. Not like I could do any better! lol
