To absolutely no one’s surprise, the new releases are just repackages of the existing releases, albeit with new disc and cover art. Some day.
Why wasn’t there a huge announcement of this?

Because they’re just repackaged discs
I would put this in my sig if I weren’t so lazy.

Agreed. If there was anything of considerable significance with this release there would have been much more hype for them.
It’s still incredibly strange how low-profile these releases were. Not to mention that they came out on a Sunday, for some reason.

Repackaged re-releases with no fanfare are super common nowadays, though. Just look at all the repackaged MCU Blu-Rays that have come out over the past year or so with the ugly matching covers.
Yeah, it’s just to have them out there individually but with cheap packaging and a digital copy this time.
We’re not even going to see the 4k master in 1080p form until the UHD hits. They’re going to want the 2160p HDR version to look as stunning as possible compared to anything that’s been available before.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, if its not unaltered then I ain’t buying it.
Well, yeah, if you already own the Blu-Rays, why bother buying a repackaged copy of the same discs?
If the 4K UHDs are the special editions, then no sale. But what if they aren’t quite the Originals, but closer to them than the blu rays? I’d probably get them.
Would that mean the end of any hope to ever see them release the fully restored Originals though?

I will get them even if they are just the GL SE. For one with HDR I expect the colors to be massively improved. Secondly >90% of the films are just the OOT, and this will likely be the highest quality these films have ever been with the amount of detail far exceeding the potential of any fan restoration.

It would most definitely be a higher resolution, and a wider RANGE of colors, but would they be the CORRECT colors? And what would some of those cgi effects (like Jabba) look like inserted in a 4K scene?
Of all movies, I just can’t believe there isn’t a proper release. This is maddening!
I just @ed Robert Iger on Twitter asking for the out, maybe if the rest of us do so he might answer us.

I tweeted Trump on May 4th to make Star Wars great again by releasing the unaltered originals along with a link to this website.

I have a feeling I’ll have more luck than you, as he only cares about himself.

If the 4k/BD set next year had the actual Special Editions in them I’d buy them in a second. They look better than the DVD or BD cuts, and they otherwise haven’t been released at a resolution higher than laserdisc. Honestly the Special Editions are probably rarer than the originals are at this point.

best buy and target release their weekly ad on sunday, which ostensibly (or at least historically) drives people to stores
When the Original Trilogy makes its way to 4K, it will, without a doubt, be the 2011 Special Edition. However, do you think it’s possible that Disney and Lucasfilm will at least correct both the colors and sound mixes to match the theatrical presentations and sound far less compressed?

Can we get a twitter account going called “Is Star Wars 1977 out yet?” You know, the kind where every day it’s a single post with a variation of “no” depending on the mood. You know like https://twitter.com/ismother3outyet
