Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker - Discussion * SPOILER THREAD * — Page 106

It seemed like most people figured it was a vision, and there are still people speculating otherwise despite this news, and will continue to. That is interesting they decided to edit it, I don’t think it was really necessary to do so. Thanks for sharing.

Let’s hope they don’t accidentally upload the shooting script or anything. 😉

Yeah I myself also felt like others that it was very likely a vision but the fact its effectively confirmed now takes a good bit of wind out of the sails of any exciting speculation and discussion they probably hoped to stoke from showing the footage. There will still be questions as to what the vision means for the story but the big talking point was obviously supposed to be if Rey somehow turns to the dark side.

I assumed it was a vision as soon as I watched it and I suspect most people did. Not really a slip up on the official discussion leak.

Off of the current direction a bit, it looks like we’ll finally get to see some of that elusive training for Rey. Maybe that will allay some of the criticisms and Mary Sue BS.

Who brought the remote or is she alone and brought it herself? I haven’t watched the trailer enough to see who else may be in that forest setting.

To me it looks like she is on the same planet where the new Resistance Base is, training alone with the training probe on the Falcon (maybe a new one). Either she is alone, or maybe we’ll see Force ghost Luke at the end of this scene giving her the “we’ve passed on all we know” speech.

I don’t know if they showed a new planet, but it looked vaguely like place where Maz Canata lived. Maybe she had a bunch of other Jedi junk lying around. Then again maybe it’s just a generic forest world.

It didn’t stop all the evil clone discussions.

I thought it might be Endor. The hippie festival Rey and co. come upon looks like it could be an Ewok thing?

Didn’t some of the early concept art for Ep 9 show Yavin 4? That would be my guess as to where the ‘new’ Resistance base is, and where Rey is training with the probe.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

The old, they’ll never think to look for us where we had a secret base forty years ago ploy. 😉

I’m assuming the Death Star chunk crash-landed on Endor and maybe wreaked enough ecological damage to create barren areas, hence the landscape behind Rey and co. as they advance upon the festival. The Ewoks may be gathering to combat the great evil that has been spreading from the DS wreckage since the battle 30 years ago. Rey could simply have gotten the remote from the Falcon where Finn tossed it aside in TFA.
Or has it been established that it’s the first Death Star in the ocean…?

I guess everyone assumes that Palpatine’s ghost haunts the DSII wreckage, which is in the sea… by a wheat field or something? Plus there’s a TFA concept piece showing the observation tower under water which they are probably revisiting. The desert world was called Pasaana or something I think so probably not the same place.

Mr. Sunday Movies pointed out something interesting about the shot with Leia in his breakdown.

They may have used CGI to digitally layer Carrie Fisher’s face onto another actress. I don’t know if that is true, but so far what I am seeing of Leia definitely is doing a very good job of not taking me out of Episode IX and making me feel as if I’m watching footage shot for one of the other films.

Yeah it’s pretty good, I hope that the full scenes she’s in aren’t distracting.

I’m sure they’re putting a lot of money behind it to make sure they aren’t. I’m glad they’ve given her a new outfit too. I don’t want to get my hopes up about her inclusion in the film, because realistically there’s only so much you can accomplish, but so far JJ and KK have been very enthusiastic about how well it works. It’s easily the aspect of the film I’m most nervous about, and perhaps unfairly. Leia clearly was supposed to get her due in this film, and at this point there’s no way for them to do it how it should have been done. But I am hopeful that there’s some way to make this film about her in a similar way the prior two were about Han and Luke, even without a lot of footage (characters of course can have a large presence even with little screen time). JJ has said she’s “the heart of the film,” so maybe, just maybe…

Game of Death was one of the worst examples of bringing back dead actors in a movie. However, not to go off topic, if Game of Death was finished today, they would probably use motion capture and CGI to bring Bruce Lee back. Very much like Peter Cushing in Rogue One.

Leia took a page out of Obi-Wan’s book, The Art of Hiding in Obvious Places.

Yeah, I think that is Yavin IV (I recall reading that they considered making the Resistance Base in TFA Yavin, which is why the base interior looks very similar to Yavin, with roots growing over the stone structures), and I think the crashed Death Star is the DSII, and the environment is just more variable on Endor than it is on your typical Star Wars planet.

Honestly, what they’re doing with Leia is one of the things I’m most excited about. Just seeing how they pull it off, regardless of how much she is in there, is pretty incredible. Because it isn’t a situation where the actor died during production, like it was in the cases of Bruce or Brandon Lee, Oliver Reed, and Paul Walker. This time they are actually using unused footage from a different movie to have a deceased actress play a roll in a film she never shot anything for. I hope the home release has a in-depth look at how they accomplished it.

Game of Death is awesome. All 20 minutes of it. The stupid movie they made after the fact is terrible and so are the CGI commercials they made with Bruce Lee selling whiskey or something stupid.

If you look at the super laser dish from the TROS trailer and you look at the two Death Stars, if they have accurately depicted it (this is Abrams so I think accuracy is likely), it will be the first Death Star and Yavin IV. And yeah, the desert planet has nothing to do with the Death Star location.

Have you posted about this before? I’m curious how you were able to compare them and figure that out!

Well if it is the first Death Star maybe it crashed onto Yavin II, III or something like that!

If the Resistance Base is back on Yavin IV, I wonder what that would mean if the Death Star was in the same system? If that is the first Death Star, then I would think the Resistance Base is somewhere else and not on Yavin IV.

Rogue One is redundant. Just play the first mission of DARK FORCES.

It’s true that the dish looks like DS I, but the surface pattern on the rest of the wreckage looks like DS II. Most notably, DS I has wide light grey areas on each side of the trench that end just below the laser dish. The DS wreckage does not have this, so it doesn’t fully look like either version. Perhaps we’ve seen an unfinished or purposely misleading effect shot in the trailer, I assume they will get it right in the finished film.

The wreckage has been battered by the elements for decades though.
