Oh, carbonite freezing isn’t unique anymore. Looks like it is usual business now.

Rogue One is redundant. Just play the first mission of DARK FORCES.

It was used in a TCW episode, too, so it hasn’t been unique in a while.

Was it ever implied that it wasn’t unique? All Vader said in ESB was that Cloud City’s facilities were crude, not that anyone had never been frozen that way before. I still don’t know what they usually froze there when Vader wasn’t luring Luke into a trap. 😉

It’s kinda funny, the show hasn’t even aired yet and we can already see how they’ve shuffled dialogue around for the trailer. The “don’t you agree” at the end is from a different conversation and they even used a different take than the one shown in the clip shown at Star Wars Celebration.

Either way, I love the vibe of it all, it’s very Rogue One-esque, which is exactly what I personally want more of. I think Dinsey realized that many fans are sort of split between preferring either the TFA-style or the RO approach, so they’ve basically split it all into those two categories.

I am however a bit surprised that the trailer didn’t use the music cue from the end of the SWC trailer. I got the impression that it was actually the Mandalorian’s theme. It had a really eerie, vaguely spaghetti-western, feel to it.

In a galaxy where this technology exists, it’d be weird if smugglers or bounty hunters never realized it could be used to transport prisoners/bounties.

Plus, this show is set roughly 5-6 years after Han was frozen ESB.

It was better as a random idea Darth Vader had since he was on Cloud City. They didn’t even know if it would kill Han or not. Now even the coffee table he was frozen in is the same. Like everything in these spin-offs it feels grey and muted but most of all fan servicey and boring instead of creative. I’d like to get excited seeing IG-88 but I can’t after Rogue One and Solo, because this is just more of that.

Well, I thought that trailer looked pretty awesome. I’m excited for this now.

I agree about the carbon freezing thing but TCW is to blame for it. This show is just doing something natural given the ‘canon’ predecessors already out there.

My stance on revising fan edits.

It certainly looks like they put in the work to give us a heavier RO styled series. It’s in great hands with Favreau and Howard. I don’t know how many episodes she’ll end up directing, but they both have a history of being involved with quality work. I’ll be waiting on day one.

She’s long been my pick for the role of Mara Jade if they ever bring her to the screen.

By the way, the director of photography on this show is Greig Fraser, who also was DOP on Rogue One. So that’ll give us a similar look.

Bryce should definitively play a major character! A redhead would be a welcome change from all the brunettes (Qi’ra, Jyn, Rey, Leia…)

Han: Hey Lando! You kept your promise, right? Not a scratch?
Lando: Well, what’s left of her isn’t scratched. All the scratched parts got knocked off along the way.
Han (exasperated): Knocked off?!

I’ve seen the feel of it compared to RO a few times now. Here’s a quote straight from the man about the kind of vibe he’s going for with the series:

Jon Favreau said:

If you notice, there’s a certain look that the Mandalorian lead character has, there’s a size that the spaceship is, there’s a scale that lines up with the Original Trilogy. I’m trying to evoke the aesthetics of not just the Original Trilogy but the first film. Not just the first film but the first act of the first film. What was it like on Tatooine? What was going on in that cantina? That has fascinated me since I was a child, and I love the idea of the darker, freakier side of Star Wars, the Mad Max aspect of Star Wars.

That said, this is EXACTLY what I’ve wanted from new Star Wars!

What is the coffee table used for the rest of the time then? It’s perfectly sized for most humanoid life forms. Why would it have hardware built in to show Han was alive and in perfect hibernation? TCW or not, I don’t think Vader pulled this idea out of thin air. The risk came from using the crude facility on Bespin.

Yeah, if the show was set before TESB like TCW is, I think it’d take away from the whole carbon freeze thing. But since it’s set after TESB, I think it works well.

And RO is by far my favorite post-2005 SW related thing, so I’m super excited that the DP is the same and the whole feel is the same. I think RO also drew inspiration from, very specifically, the aesthetic of the first act of the first film. I couldn’t be more excited. I think this is what Lucasfilm should’ve been doing since the Disney acquisition. Lucas already told his story. Of course they’d have to release VII - IX, but IMO they shouldn’t have. They should’ve just focused on telling stories in this endless universe that is the SW galaxy. I haven’t watched Solo, but RO is one of my favorite SW films. And this is looking like is going to be one of my favorite pieces of SW media. Yay!

Presumably it’s not used the rest of the time? Since the gas they produce or its storage is never seen we will never know. The life support thing I give you, but I think it’s more of an evil scheme than a sci-fi technology that makes real sense.

It’s funny because for so many years I couldn’t wait for a live action Star Wars TV show, but that’s only because I thought that’d be the only live action SW content we’d ever get. Ultimately I’m excited we can have pieces of media that live alongside the saga like this and take the franchise in different directions, but it’s hard for me to care about it as much at the main saga. As a movie/tv fan I don’t mind, because there’s always the potential it could be better than Star Wars as we know it - but as a Star Wars fan looking forward to more Star Wars, to me something like this isn’t really Star Wars, more like Star Wars adjacent.

RO was very okay, so I’m pleased that while Fraser is involved (easily the best part of that film), seemingly none of the rest of that movie’s creative team is (save Kennedy, naturally). Interested to see what Favreau and the rest do with it. At the moment, I’ve got high hopes.

This right here is what I tried to say.

If Vader refers to the carbon freezing tech as crude, then the tech must be from the past. The carbon freezing from this trailer is probably a more modern variant, safe for bounty hunters.

I never took carbon freezing lifeforms was “crude” or even unusual in the Star Wars universe, but that the carbon freezing equipment specifically on Bespin was crude, and designed with a different purpose in mind.

And even if it was, maybe the ugnaught in the Mandalorian trailer (Kuiil?) was one of the ugnaughts that retrofitted the tech on Bespin, and he was the one that designed the carbon freezing tech on the Mandalorian’s ship, realizing the potential of the idea. It is like 6~ years after ESB so technology evolving isn’t a crazy idea.

The Mandalorian is only 8-9 years after The Empire Strikes Back. The Carbon freezing isn’t that old of a procedure for this series.

So even older than I thought! That’s plenty of time for the tech to be adopted by other bounty hunters.

This video clip contains 7 minutes of footage from The Mandalorian, so… SPOILERS - https://youtu.be/l0dhPm3vbyE

This clip may be down by the time anyone here can see it but eventually it will be seen, I’m not too surprised to see the amount of references shown especially as it is a sneak peak, but I hope to see the show come into more of its own once he actually goes on some bounty hunts. Of course it’s a treat to see Herzog. 😃
