Small details that took you FOREVER to notice in the Star Wars films — Page 2

Good catch! Could also be a byproduct of Lucas cutting and pasting different takes together? Or they shot some new scenes later on a greenscreen set? Can’t unsee it now. 😉

Another cool detail about those spacetroopers is that they’re both played by the same person, concept artist and effects technician Joe Johnston.

Indeed very much like the shot of the Tusken Raider in ANH. Here’s the scene:

Obviously, the bluray will give you a much better look at what’s been done here.

It looks like different areas of the background have been affected in different ways. The center background moves normally at first, then moves in reverse after the foreground person passes by, then freezes for the rest of the shot. The left and right backgrounds are static at first, then start moving as the foreground person passes by.

I remember noticing one instance in the prequels where they reversed a shot of Anakin for about a second or two so they could extend the scene. It’s during the part in AOTC where he’s describing his Tusken Raider killing spree to Padme. There’s probably countless examples of editing artifacts like these being left in scenes due to the editing together of separate takes into the same shot.

Honestly I think Lucas went a bit overboard with his merging of takes. It kinda takes something away from the actors’ performances in my opinion. I guess he was just really eager to take full advantage of the new tech, that’s just my thoughts though.

In the Ridiculous edits, reversed shots are done for laughs. Who knew Lucas was doing it straight?

The left moves its head and the right one is eating, they’re not static.

Alright, I can’t really post a vid of gif of this right now, but not long ago I discovered something in AOTC. In the transport scene with Anakin and Padme headed for Naboo. Watch the background of aliens as R2 enters the shot and gives Padme something and she says “thank you, R2”. At first, the background is almost completely static, but then R2 leaves and someone passes in front of the camera (indicating an edit). The background aliens start moving and then almost immediately the shot goes in reverse with the aliens going back into their startup positions. You can then tell, for whatever reason, they didn’t have enough footage to play with for that shot. It also makes me wonder how they did this shot because I thought this was filmed on a set with no green screen. Maybe they roto-ed those aliens into the background…

There’s a lot more effects shots in these movies than we realize. Most scenes have had split screens done (to manipulate actors timing and pull from multiple takes within a single shot), not to mention who knows what other sort of shenanigans. That shot has definitely been altered a good bit.

I seem to remember George talking in the TPM doc about how excited he was about digital editing because he could do exactly that kind of thing as much as he wanted and didn’t need to get things perfect within one take.

-The Gungans that Anakin and Padme pass by while hauling their luggage to the palace are speaking with TPM Gungan audio- “Holy goosa madada”

-The little bubble pods that the clone troopers sit in on the gunships fire a laser that looks a lot like the Death Star laser

I’ve never been able to figure out how they get in and out of those pods. The joy of CGI is never having to figure out how these things would work in real life. 😉

Not to mention the fact that, for the entirety of AOTC and ROTS, Lucas replaced Sebastian Shaw with Hayden Christensen…

Yeah…in fact, here’s another shot I noticed years ago in AOTC (again, watch the bluray for a better look):

After Dooku says, “I’m sorry old friend” and the droids re-engage their “arm blasters”, the next shot of Mace Windu turning his head look…off. I originally thought the footage was reversed, but watching it again now, that doesn’t seem to be the case. I just think it was slowed down. Everything else seems to be at a normal speed…then again, no one else makes a sudden movement like Windu does…plus Windu easily could’ve been filmed separately.

In ROTS Anakin says “Padme help me” or something before his mask goes on, though this may not have actually been a thing.

I honestly don’t understand why Lucas never directed animated movies. Seems like it would have been a bit more fitting.

I mean he did. Strange Magic? The film that Disney kinda buried. It’s a shame really I wish it had a Blu-Ray release

After being beaten and battered by prequel hate, I promise not to be that to the next generation.

He didn’t direct that movie.

I’ve always noticed that but I assumed it was done on purpose.

I don’t see anything odd about that shot. I think you’re just imagining things.

We’ll yeah, but for what purpose? Why was this shot of Windu needed? Was it really the only “reaction” shot available?

To give emphasis to their imminent death. Kind of a “Windu mindset” shot.

I never noticed Fake Mace in Episode One until someone pointed it out. It was a while before I noticed Yoda walking down the ramp in that scene as well, and it looks exactly like a little person in a suit. It may or may not be in the current version of the film though.

Why George didn’t go back and tweak these when he’s concerned about the roof of a Wookiee hut in ROTS is a mystery.

I find fake Mace hilarious and I never noticed it until it was pointed out to me either.
