Although… Star Wars has already introduced time travel as canon, AND used it as a way to bring dead characters back to life (Ahsoka).

Indeed: Rebels seasons 3 and 4 were so bad…

(and Palpatine was lame in season 4 ending)

(seasons 1 & 2 were quite good though)

At the very least, Filoni introduced Novikov self-consistency principle-style time travel. Basically, it is time travel, but they can’t really alter the past. What happened, happened. The Prisoner of Azkaban is a really good example of this.

A part of me likes to think Filoni introduced time travel this way to Star Wars so “what happened, happened” are the canon rules and no future writers can write canon stories that change the past! Pretty clever I think.

So Luke wasn’t joking back in the original film? 😉

                     THREEPIO
Is there anything I might do to help?

Luke glances at the battered robot. A bit of his anger drains
and a tiny smile creeps across his face.

                       LUKE
Well, not unless you can alter time,
speed up the harvest, or teleport me
             off this rock!

So teleportation must be a thing too…

Does astral projection count?

Has that ever been a thing in the EU?

Has the nu-Canon said anything about Anakin’s birth, etc?

Going by the “what happened, happened” rules of time travel, The saga’s grand finale could, if it wanted to, turn the whole I-IX story into a causality loop, hence the title The Rise of Skywalker.

If this turns into that Futurama episode where Fry sleeps with his grandmother in the past…

People are now saying Rey is Shimi Skywalker, which raises some very concerning questions I think don’t fit in the SW universe. Hopefully, this isn’t the case.

Uh, yeah. I don’t think those people are considering the extremely problematic implications of that scenario.

I don’t think this shmi-theory will be in IX. It doesn’t bring Anakin’s arc full circle. Only by wandering down the reylo road Anakin(Ben)'s story can be complete. There have already been enough evidence for this (similar concept arts, themes, shots) to say that the theory is pretty much a safe bet.

I’m more interested in how they will reveal that Ben is Anakin and Rey is Padme (if this is indeed the case) and how the fandom will react.

Hmmm, I guess his journey is full circle too, right…

I hope the story doesn’t involve time travel, but that the Whills factor into it in some way, even if it’s just at the very end with Artoo giving them the “journal” of everything that happened throughout the saga.

Didn’t Mark Hamill say in an interview back in the early 80’s that George had told him the ending of IX (or at least IX as it existed in George’s head at the time before he basically folded everything into RotJ) and that Mark thought it was “really weird?”

Whether that was the Whills, or the ending I’ve heard BSG ripped off (finding Earth “a long time ago”), or this microbiotic world George mentioned last year, who knows?

^ If they find the Earth from a long time ago, then it’s no longer “a galaxy far far away” and is actually “A time long away in the future” LOL

Anyway, a new rumour has it that TROS just started a number of reshoots that could possibly run through till September. But with so many wild theories getting about currently (such as a few brought up by RLM) who knows what to believe at the moment.

Mike Zero is fun to watch, but I don’t take anything he has to say seriously. Not unless he grabbed it from a more reliable source. He makes some interesting guesses, but ultimately he has a history of missing. The leaks for VII were pretty accurate and the entire story was pretty much out, with some omissions. Enough of VIII was out to have an idea of the story. So I think some of the leaks for IX are probably right, but not all of them. If the attention to detail is on the level it has been, then we are going back to Yavin IV and the wreckage of the first Death Star. Palpatine is back in spirit but not body. No solid information about how he is defeated, only claims from Lucasfilm that Palpatine was always going to be a part of IX. It is also clear that the basic story they are following is the one written by Lucas himself. They have altered the story to fit the new creative team (Luke not showing up until VIII) but the basic story remains the same. I think had Lucas done the ST, that Luke would have died in VII, not VIII. Lucas does believe in repeating poetry and rhymes in the form of story beats repeating. The PT was very much a repeat of the OT with many points, though the outcome of the trilogy was decidedly different. I am excited by this film and I hope they have done something that is both creative and true to Lucas’ vision of how the saga should end.

I still think it’s best that when the release date comes closer, we unsubscribe from this thread, and then come back after we see the film.

There are a lot of very silly ideas floating around here, and none of them fit into the category of ‘desperately playing it safe it please everyone’. I predict 50% ROTJ and 50% True Sith Red Guys vs First Order.

Reminder that Rey has CTE. Her parents dumped her on Jakku at 5/6/7 years old yet she doesn’t know who they are.

So you’re saying orphans have brain damage?

Allow me to explain myself. Rey was left on Jakku at an age where she would have a clear memory of her parents.
Ergo ipso facto, she got hit on the head.
