And don’t feel the need to make it perfect; I’ll likely try my hand at the audio editing when I get around to it anyway. Just test it enough to satisfy yourself that it’s possible to be done well, I guess.
In case, though… I like to cut off the coin gag a half-beat after the first coin gets inserted, before the alien reacts with anger. Cutting away after about the same duration as the final coin insertion in the original ending.

It’s a quiet day in the office, here is the second rough draft before I read your comment!

As for the coin gag, I have the scene cut to Finn and Rose after BB8 shakes his head but BEFORE the burp.

I’ll mess around with cutting it off per your suggestion!

I wonder if it’s possible to insert some of the casino shots from the deleted scenes. That way, you get the feeling that Finn and Rose took a long time to search for the codebreaker, without having to reinsert the awful coin gag.

Whoops I used up my weekly upload limited on Vimeo (free account). Once that is refreshed I’ll upload the third attempt that’s more in line with Hal’s latest post suggestion!

I think if you cut Rose’s line identifying the creatures as Fathiers, you also need to cut the preceding line where she says “are those what I think they are?”, however I also don’t really think that cut is possible so I’d err on the side of leaving both lines.

I agree that I’d also rather see some deleted or BTS footage cleaned up and included over the BB8 coin joke, there’s actually quite a lot of it on the Blu-Ray: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVEoevKRE3M

Now that I am starting to turn some of my attention to THE LAST JEDI, I hate to make this edit much longer than it already is. It’s already the longest Star Wars movie, and when I consider that my prequel edits clock it at as low as 1 hour and 50 minutes, I am wondering what else could be trimmed.

I am just tossing this around, but what do you guys think of the idea to borrow poppasketti’s approach to removing the Finn vs. Phasma duel? Compared to the theatrical TLJ, this hypothetical version of Finn’s journey would…

  • Add the orientation early on from the deleted scene with Poe’s jacket
  • Reinstate a sense of “wow I guess people get oppressed” from the Canto Bight balcony (compared to TLJ:L V2, anyway)
  • Remove Finn and Rose racking up insurance claims across Space Vegas
  • Remove his fight with Phasma, but reinstating the scene that demonstrates his resolve and references the earlier deleted scene

It seems like Finn would still have a good arc this way. The only concern that sticks out to me about the idea is that Phasma gets reintroduced only to die offscreen. I’d rather she not appear in the film at all if we go this way, but this is the way it would have to be. For this reason, I am leaning away from making this change, but I felt it was worthwhile to toss out there for discussion.

I personally wouldn’t worry too much about runtime. The best length for a film to be is as long or short as it needs to be to tell the story as effectively as possible. If you do include that change, do it because you think it improves the film, not because it makes the runtime shorter. Pacing is another issue entirely, as I’ve seen short films that are poorly paced and long films that feel positively brisk.

Imho Phasma shouldn’t be in TLJ.

I agree that if you go the Poppasketti route, it would be ideal for Phasma to not be in it at all. I have no clue how tough this would be, but what if fx work could be done to make Phasma a different commanding officer by changing her armour colour, dubbing a new voice with some alternate lines, and maybe something else to make her not so obviously Phasma. This would keep in line with other movies where we introduce cool characters only to have them die immediately, but doesn’t further do a disservice to Phasma. Maybe it’s the lesser of two evils??

I recently watched this edit and loved it. It’s damn near perfect for my editing-related gripes with TLJ. I think the ONLY thing still in there that I really didn’t like was Rey’s line “Master Skywalker, we need you to bring the Jedi back because Kylo Ren is strong with the dark side of the Force” at the start of the First Lesson scene. It just strikes me as incredibly stilted (plus repetitive of the “there’s no light left in Kylo Ren” conversation earlier), and the scene would work just fine if it started with Luke’s subsequent question “What do you know about the Force?”

I didn’t like that line at first either, but I started realizing that Rey has probably been repeating that line in her head during the entire journey to Ach-To, worrying about what she should say to legendary Jedi that would convince him to come back with her. So she is just repeating what she has been practicing to say.

Author

If you can remove Phasma completely, that would be ideal since Phasma was pretty much just thrown in the movie.

The difficult part would be to try and convince the audience if you were to recolor/redub/etc. Phasma that it is indeed someone else that is the same/similar rank. The issue is, her armor is very distinctive and it would be hard to explain that all Captains have that kind of armor.

“Because you are a PalpaWalker?”

Author
Time

Yeah, it would require a lot of intense vfx work on the armour - more than just recoloring. Probably not worth it but I’m curious to see if it could be pulled off.

Author

The other option would be trying to remove as many scenes that shows Phasma, or cropping her out using the 4k version. I did a really quick overlook and there are a few areas where that is fairly easy to do, and others that would take some more work. Depending on my free time I can try to at least come up with ROUGH clips.

Removing Phasma is an interesting idea, and I might be able to take a cursory glance at what might be needed. But, I’m inclined to just leave it as is, just because I’m skeptical that it would be convincing.

I really like this version. You kept just enough of the coin gag to be funny, but not overstay its welcome. I would say you could possibly throw in two or three deleted shots as well to help create a sense of time passing, but I think it still works as-is.

Author

I like it Hal! I agree with Rogue’s take that the coin part doesn’t overstay it’s welcome.

Also just having Rose name the critters and not say anything else is a good touch as well.

The door is not shut on this, but here’s my current changelist for a V3. (Some of these ideas are from krlozdac’s newly published TLJ edit.)

  • Remove the silly mugshot of Hux after commenting on Poe’s X-wing approaching
  • Remove Rey interpreting Chewbacca to Luke (He just responds with “The Falcon?”)
  • Remove Luke’s quip about Jakku being “pretty much nowhere” (the new movies are somewhat snarky in ways the OT never was IMHO, and so I’d rather keep Luke away from that - humor, but not gags)
  • Remove Rose responding to Finn’s “MTFBWY” with “you too.”
  • Tighten up Finn and Rose’s reaction to Maz’s “Oh yes, he can” for better timing
  • Reinstate a trimmed version of the balcony scene overlooking kids and horses being beaten on Canto Bight
  • Reinstate Rey asking Kylo Ren if he has a cowl to put on

That moment never bugged me, but I understand why people want to remove it.

  • Remove Rey interpreting Chewbacca to Luke (He just responds with “The Falcon?”)

I’d prefer if that scene stayed the way it is. Removing that bit creates makes the scene feel weird.

  • Remove Luke’s quip about Jakku being “pretty much nowhere” (the new movies are somewhat snarky in ways the OT never was IMHO, and so I’d rather keep Luke away from that - humor, but not gags)

Good idea. I never really liked that joke. Jakku was the site of the final battle between the Rebellion and the Empire, it isn’t “pretty much nowhere.”

  • Remove Rose responding to Finn’s “MTFBWY” with “you too.”

Another good idea. Rose fangirling over Finn is one of my biggest gripes with that subplot.

  • Tighten up Finn and Rose’s reaction to Maz’s “Oh yes, he can” for better timing

I’d prefer if the joke was cut completely. Double entendres aren’t part of the OT’s style of humor.

  • Reinstate a trimmed version of the balcony scene overlooking kids and horses being beaten on Canto Bight

I’d really like this. The lack of political context is one of the sequels’ weak points, so it’s good to have at least some backstory for how the First Order rose to power.

  • Reinstate Rey asking Kylo Ren if he has a cowl to put on

I’d prefer if that line was cut. I’ve never been a fan of Rey and Kylo’s relationship, so I’d like to downplay it as much as possible.

I was impressed by how the scene played without Rey interpreting for Chewie, but I’ll see what I think in a while.

Maz’s comment and Rey asking about a cowl are both part of the film’s sexual undertones. I still really dislike the entire Maz scene, but if it must be kept then I want to keep the sexual humor.
Rey’s question to Ren is another example of her being somewhat prudish or new to sexuality, just like how she looks away from the walrus that Luke milks.

I won’t be of much help about this, since I don’t believe TLJ needs that many things to be removed. My only issues with the theatrical cut that can be fixed are essentially the “MCU stuff” (and not even all of it). That being said, about the V3 changes :

Remove the silly mugshot of Hux after commenting on Poe’s X-wing approaching
Remove Rey interpreting Chewbacca to Luke (He just responds with “The Falcon?”)

Seems like good ideas.

Remove Luke’s quip about Jakku being “pretty much nowhere”

Well I like this joke 😃

Remove Rose responding to Finn’s “MTFBWY” with “you too.”

Yeah, in favor of removing it. Finn has just been around for like 24 hours, I don’t get why he would be some kind of rock star.

Tighten up Finn and Rose’s reaction to Maz’s “Oh yes, he can” for better timing

Why not ?

Reinstate a trimmed version of the balcony scene overlooking kids and horses being beaten on Canto Bight

Yep, I agree without that the movie lacks depth.

Reinstate Rey asking Kylo Ren if he has a cowl to put on

Funny that we’ll never agree about that 😄 we have the same interpretation of the film, but we don’t interpret this sequence the same way.

V1 changes redacted in V2:

Hux being berated by Snoke

(the scene doesn’t work at all)

V1 or V2 changes for which I don’t agree with :

Trimmed Paige kicking the ladder slightly
Removed Rose repeating, “They can track us through lightspeed.“
Removed Luke’s line to R2, “Nothing can make me change my mind.”
Trimmed some of the comedy with BB8 being placed under a basket
Removed the detail from Kylo Ren that Rey’s parents are buried in the Jakku desert

Can you post what it would look like with the interpretation to see?

As for the Cowl scene, I’m personally neutral on it, so with our without it is the same to me, so trust your judgment on that one!

As for the Maz scene, seriously, if the whole thing can be removed that would be a god send.
