The ‘Custom Special Edition’ That Almost Wasn’t, But Then Was (Released) — Page 11

He’s just putting all the pieces together in his head and grasping the scale of what’s going on.
Hmmm, the kid’s here AND his mom’s droids. Something’s going DOWN.

So I’ve come up with another idea which is from Adywans edit. I know it’s been expressed you don’t want it to reflect to much of his version but just thought I bring it forward. The Death Star Countdown to destroy Yavin, would that be a supposed thing to tackle???

Nah, I prefer to stick to the official versions. I want to have the films feel familiar and changing too much undoes that. It’s subjective on my part, but I don’t want to stray too far down the slippery slope past what the official releases did. I break my own rule at a few points, though.
So… I’m okay with leaving most of that stuff alone.

Gotcha Hal. 😉

  • Changing Obi-Wan’s line to “[I] wanted you to have this when you were old enough, but your uncle wouldn’t allow it.”

  • “…[a] Jedi Master who instructed me.”

Actually, I wonder how you all would feel about implementing these two specific alterations. Blasphemous? Acceptable within the frame of a ‘Special Edition’ for saga continuity? Irreconcilably opposed to me having bent over backwards to conform Ep3 to a few lines of dialogue from ROTJ? Okay to do only if relegated to a non-default audio track?

Honestly I have no problem with either of those changes.

The second change seems anodyne enough, but the first significantly changes Luke’s motivation IMO since he now decides to become a Jedi without any information about his father’s wishes. Because of this, the revelation in ESB could have less of an impact because Luke is becoming a Jedi more of his own volition and less because he believed that his father wanted him to follow in his footsteps.

I never had too hard a time believing that Obi-Wan was just bending the truth there to give Luke a nudge down the path of a Jedi. I agree that changing “[a] Jedi Master who instructed me” is fine.

Hopefully Ben’s line can be changed without affecting video sync, meaning that I can have audio tracks with both.

And of course the other can be changed to “the Jedi Master who instructed the Jedi Master who instructed the Jedi Master who instructed me.” 😛

I seem to recall seeing a mockup at some point of the altered line in Ben’s hut that sounded perfect. Does anyone here know whose this was or where it can be found? None of the “I”s I’ve had time to try so far fit in very well.

To me, the movie only allows the reasonable inference that Ben is lying after the dramatic pause when Luke asks about how his father died. Before that point, the clear implication is that he’s telling him the truth which Owen has obscured.

Eh, it’s probably better not to alter the OT in that sort of way. I’ve got ESB fully ready to go, and I hope to begin distributing tomorrow. The picture looks better than I’ve seen Empire before, thanks to DrDre and Sir Ridley. I didn’t have a complete set of LUTs, and creatively mixed and matched them much of the time on a scene-by-scene (and occasionally shot-by-shot) basis, but I’m happy with the colors throughout. There are zero changes to the content, as this is merely remastering with a superior primary video source.

How about trying to change in ROTJ “Obi-Wan once thought as you do” to “Your mother once thought as you do”?

That was something Ridley worked on a bit on the Collaborative Saga Edit thread.

I definitely think that change, and the “a Jedi master” change are fairly harmless changes. I can see the arguments against the “I wanted you to have this” argument. I guess for me it just felt more like a blatant, manipulative lie on Obi-Wan’s part. Whereas the Vader lie could arguably be for Luke’s own safety. The other questionable bit would be “He feared you might follow old Obi-Wan on some damn fool idealistic crusade like your father did.”

While not really accurate, Obi-Wan could be repeating something Owen said to him, based off his own perspective. So the quote could be seen as: He feared you might follow old Obi-Wan on some “damn fool idealistic crusade” like your father did.

I agree it would change the characterization, but not by much. Either way he’s deciding to follow in his father’s footsteps. One it’s due to his father’s wishes, the other it’s him actively wanting to be like his father (in absence of knowing his father’s thoughts on the matter). Depending on how you look at it, the latter could actually be more devastating in regards to the ESB reveal. I don’t think it’s a problematic change at all (the alternative, if you’re considering the prequels canon, is a far more severe character change for Obi-wan).

I believe that could’ve been mine. Somehow I just cut out “Your father” and that alone somehow made it sound like “I wanted you to have this-“.

I like that a great deal! Did you have to adjust sync of the shot to do that? It doesn’t appear so. Could you perhaps send me audio?

Does anyone else seem to recall Adywan once doing a mockup (long ago) of changing the line to “A Jedi Master who instructed me”? I can’t seem to find it anywhere, and was hoping it would steer me down an already-established path to doing it.

That’s what I think too, even if it’s a lie I feel like “your father” works better than “I”.

I think I got the line to sound a little bit better even. I threw in a tiny bit of the “I” leading into “I have something here for you.” But I crossfaded it with the end of “your father” which evidently sounds a fair bit like Ben is saying “I” in the first place.

Hoping that “A Jedi Master…” turns out okay, too. It at least won’t be as easy as clipping the beginning of the word “the.”

It’s already an improvement over mine, Hal!

I personally have had trouble getting “A Jedi Master” right, but I think you’ll figure it out!

I tried to use the “-a” from “Yoda”. But in the version I had you can tell I messed up the crossfading or something. I think I did it like a year ago.

Maybe you could also take “-ah” from “Dagobah”, or cut “the” short so you lose the “th” sound.

I think that’s the only tweak of the sort that I would like to apply to ESB, but for ANH I think I’ll do an alternate track with the following:

  • “[I] wanted you to have this…”
  • 2004 Krayt dragon call
  • Luke calling out to Biggs from the radio drama after his death (similar to Adywan’s implementation - to help the SE scene feel more valid)

I’d be interested in this. Would you also consider bringing in any bits from the mono mix, such as the “Blast it Wedge, where are you?” line?
