I don’t, however, get this feeling from the “You talk first” bit at all. I’ve never understood the issue people have with that one.

It’s a joke quite out of tone that makes fun of the main threat. I would also add it’s not funny. TFA is the less Star Wars movie of the bunch with the way dialogues are written all along. It’s not that the dialogues are that bad, it’s just most of the time they don’t “sound” Star Wars to me. AotC has bad dialogues, but they still sound Star Wars, for example. And during the entire running time of TFA you get this kind of “out of SW” dialogues, giving the feeling of a bad fan fiction (the very weak script and the way older characters interact with the story and th new characters quickly transform what seemed to be a quite fun ride into a painful experience… not even mentionning that JJ filmmaking is very 90’s tv series oriented and looks cheap).

So I totally get that “TFA dialogues” qualifies as “the worst thing in any SW film”. But yeah, it’s not a scene or a sequence.

Worst in the 1997 cuts are Greedo shooting first, Luke screaming as he falls and Jedi Rocks.

Embarrassing is the best way to describe Jedi Rocks. I too have a distinct memory of feeling horribly humiliated when I watched it for the first time.

I don’t get it. SW is full of “anachronistic” dialogue. Especially anything Han has to say when he calls Leia “sister” in a very 70s way and references things like crop dusting.

People grew up with the OT so they don’t think twice about it.

Either that or apparently SW has never had sardonic or snarky humor, which I guess means I’ve been watching the wrong movies.

I loved the “You talk first” line and thought it was very funny and perfectly in line with OT Star Wars humor. It also established Poe’s personality instantly.

I thought the crank call at the beginning of TLJ was dumb and not very funny.

To me these two things are comedically very different. The former is very quick and feels very screwball to me, which is more in keeping with quick-fire humorous dialogue in the OT. The latter relies on a much more modern frame of reference and dwells on the joke for a very long time. Calling him General “Hugs” seems like something a 10-year-old would do. Also, the setup for the crank call was confusing. He calls Hux and then pretends he can’t hear him and then says he’ll hold. That’s not usually how crank calls work.

The Last Jedi stops for comedic pauses, while the other films let their humor run with the story.

Like the “Reach out” gag. Both actors pause and slightly break character for the sake of a punchline.

Nothing to do about the quality of the jokes, just the style. The “Who talks first?” bit is the same, but it’s the only moment in TFA with that style, as far as I can remember.

I think you nailed down the difference between TLJ and it’s predecessors in terms of the differences in humor. The jokes aren’t necessarily worse (though I happen to think they are), but it’s more so their execution that makes them fall flat. The crank call joke stops the movie dead and leaves one of those “Uh oh! Awkard!” silences that are more popular in modern humor. Imagine if Han Solo’s “reactor leak” conversation from Star Wars was paced the same way as Poe’s crank call from TLJ. It would be terrible.

Tatooine has farms, and Luke is clearly a farm boy. Crops must get dusted somewhere, even if it’s not on Tatooine. It’s no more anachronistic than Owen’s referring to a harvest. And that use of sister goes back to the 1930’s in movies at least.

It’s not the fact that it’s snarky that sticks out to us. The dialogue, the line delivery, and pacing of the TLJ mom joke conversation feel like 2010s humor.

humor will strike different folks differently of course.

the mom joke opening is probably my least favorite part of TLJ, and i really like the movie. but i think it is a bit of an over-reach to call things “not star warsy”.

I feel like RJ thought he was coming up with the new “We’re all fine here, now, thank you…how are you?” scene, but didn’t understand what made that scene work so well.

FYI, that’s the scene “Who talks first?” reminds me of the most. I can 100% see that whole scene coming out of SW77 Han Solo’s mouth. I still think that whole thing was done very well and is what made me sit back, smile, and say “Star Wars is in good hands” within the first 5 minutes of TFA.

I still think that is mostly the case, though there have been plenty of missteps, several of which were in TFA, even. But that opening Poe/Ren scene wasn’t one of them for me.

I don’t think I said that it wasn’t star warsy. There have been failed attempts at humor in Star Wars before. Some of the humor in Jedi is atrocious. I just think the mom joke felt like it was straight out of mid-2010s “quirky” comedy, which wouldn’t be funny even if it wasn’t in Star Wars but it’s especially seeing that on a star destroyer.

The love scenes from Ep II are thoroughly rotten and a god-awful chore to sit through.

Some decent action set-pieces (barely) keep this instalment from being a complete bust.

I think we can all agree AOTC probably has the most issues. And while it’s hard to pick THE worst scene, the one that drives me crazy is Padme (NOT a Jedi but a regular human-type character) drops from who knows how many feet in the air, lands on her…um…crotch…and without missing a beat, gives her new boyfriend a peck on the cheek.

Yeah I cringe at the thought of how much that would hurt in real life.

Maybe it’s a low gravity planet? And Anakin subconciously cushioned her crotch with the Force? Yeah, that’s the ticket! 😛

Racy. Can’t believe George was able to sneek that past the MPAA censors.

Yeah, I don’t remember any good action set-pieces from AOTC either, and I’m not saying that to hate on the prequels because I’ll admit that there were a couple of decent action scenes in the other two.

I always regarding the Obi Wan GG duel as being a cinematic refuge from a bad Steven Speilberg movie that was somehow spliced into Star Wars.

Actually, Lucas let Spielberg play around with the animatics for some scenes in RotS.

Author

  1. Jedi rocks from the RotJ special edition.

  2. Vader saying “Nooooo!” when he stands up in RotS.

  3. Anakin vs Obi-Wan lightsaber battle in RotS looks like synchronized swimming and jumping on a green screen Super Mario Bros game.

  4. C-3PO’s dialogue and antics during the battle in AotC.

  5. Anakin talking to Padme about their kiss.

*Honorable mentions to all things gungan and making R2-D2 cgi instead of practical.

I personally would say that the droid assembly line sequence in AOTC is the worst sequence ever to appear on screen in a Star Wars film. It’s long, bland, inconsequential, and ultimately completely forgettable. Do you agree? What would you say is the worst? The Ewok movies don’t count, the Clone Wars animated movie or TV shows don’t count, the Holiday Special doesn’t count, and Rebels doesn’t count. We’re only counting the live action films: episodes I-VIII and R1.

The worst moment was Rose preventing Finn from sacrificing himself to save the Resistance so she could kiss him and say the most cliched line ever written: “That’s how we’re gonna win: Not by fighting what we hate but by saving what we love.”

The droid assembly line scene was no worse than the trash compactor scene in A New Hope. Both signify the “Belly of the Beast” stage in Joseph Campbell’s Hero’s Journey.

To be fair, opinions are subjective. Luke used that quote when Kylo said a wrong fact.

Nevertheless I disagree that the assembly line and trash compactor are equivalent. First, the trash compactor feels like there’s real tension. I think it has to do with the simplicity of it all. No one is shooting or flying around them, just some great editing showing the walls slowly close in on themselves. There’s so much going around on Geonosis it becomes chaotic. Anakin is in trouble and Padmé is in trouble and Threepio is in trouble. Lucas tried to replicate the sequence but overdid it.
