That color correction is just…groan.

Constructive as always.

It does seem like you went a little overboard removing the blue, Paja. Much like Ady did with the Death Star walls in ANH:R. Makes it look less visually interesting - too many whites and beiges and grays.

I personally like all the whites and beiges and grays.

Wait, what did you add? Haven’t seen the film in ages.

Oh and I’m really sorry about my harsh words earlier. I’ll try to be nicer next time.

That’s really cool, Snooker! And it also works as a cool 2001 homage/Easter egg too. Definitely like it.

The sound redesign was impressive, but man Williams really saves that fight. Without music, it helped me notice just how bad the choreography of the whole fight is. The fight in Empire is so good they didn’t even use music for most of it. I’m mad.

The AotC and RotS fights are probably the worst because they oscillate from moves that feel functional and historically inspired to move that would fit in Final Fantasy.

Without the music to deal with, I think that making the fight functional is finally a possibility.

The prequels aesthetic is wrong. It isn’t ‘Star Wars’. The Disney movies feel like ‘Star Wars’ aesthetically, with ‘old tech’ and film grain and location shooting. I just can’t make the prequels ‘feel like Star Wars’ in my mind.

Yes, the choreography alone might not be able to stand on its own, but music removal tests like these could be useful for rescoring. I felt this could be particularly useful for editors who remove the Yoda/Sidious duel, to maybe make the music transitions more seamless.

I also wanted to share a thought I had in response to Snooker’s 2001 Easter egg as well as some of Angel’s mock-ups. That is the kind of stuff that is really exciting to see. For Snooker, paja or others, if you share more mock ups, I’d love for you to make high quality versions of them, if you’re willing. It’d be great for people to save them for future projects. Snooker’s “Theed in Flames” is one that comes to mind that I would love to use eventually. It reminds me of a lot of Bingowings’ early mock-ups.

Something I’m interested in are things that make the prequels feel a little more retro and in-line with the OT’s aesthetic. Some of those Angel mock-ups remind me of that, and Snooker’s 2001 shot does that as well. Would love to see more stuff like that.

EDIT: I wrote this before I saw your most recent post Snooker! Ironic we both were thinking about that. I don’t mind the prequels aesthetic being a bit different, with the argument of it being the golden age of the Republic at all, but I think more details were changed that helped bridge that gap, it would help the prequels feel more related to the OT, if that makes sense. Something I would love to see in particular would be a total overhaul of holograms, display screens, etc. that made it more reminiscent to the OT’s retro displays.

Williams even scored parts of the ESB fight that were removed in the edit. It’s really kind of indicative of how much the PT turned Williams music from a support into a crutch.

This is really cool though.

Yeah. I mean it’s one thing to do “something different,” which is what all the PT fans say makes it great. But it’s not a little different, it’s practically entirely different. Which is too bad and there’s only so much that can be done.

Not quite, as there are fans who have made pretty good fan films. I think that theoretically it could be possible for a fan in the future to shoot new material for a prequel edit and it would look pretty good if it were to be Color corrected and shot using a camera similar to the original one.

Yeah, personal video/editing technology has improved a lot, even just in the past ten years. With enough patience and ingenuity, I think we could be capable of a lot.

I think a big thing is just deciding what exactly we want to accomplish.

For example, one goal we might have is to make the prequels look and feel more like the originals. So how do we do that? We need to define what gives the originals that look and feeling, and then lay out what we can do to the prequels to replicate that. Retrofying the prequels is one idea, and we’ve seen that is doable in certain ways through a variety of past mock-ups.

Some might say reshooting certain scenes might be called for. I would first want us to try and articulate why we feel it would improve the film, or bring them or in line with the OT.

For example, one recent idea I had was shooting new shots for Anakin Mustafar massacre to make him kill more Jedi on screen instead of just killing the Separatists. Like Zerome mentioned, trying to match the quality and cinematography would be important to try and make it seamless. I would personally think trying to copy the exacts same shots that we’re replacing would be the best way to do that. Don’t make the cinematography ‘too flashy’ compared to the rest of the movie.

I would love to see how Ady can make his new footage be seamless with the rest of ROTJ:Revisited. I think that would be a great example to learn from for future editors as well.

I think once we clearly define what we think that OT-style is, and how the PT is lacking that, it will be easier for us to approach what we can work on to help bridge that gap. FX, music, color, film grain, there are a lot of different things that might contribute to that.

These are doable, the rest seems really tough to get right but I’m certain that these changes can be made by one guy. If only adywan was still on the case, then we’d get real practical sets and such.

I think it is important to really define why we feel certain changes will benefit being made, and try not to overload ourselves with changes for the sake of change.

Like some of those changes might seem cool on paper, but a lot of them seem like things you’d start working on but then eventually realize it is either not worth the effort or it isn’t as cool or effective as you originally thought it would be.

So maybe start small, and pick a few things that are in the realm of possibility, before moving on to bigger, more challenging ideas.

I’d like to see a successful Deepfaking of Anakin, or indeed any character. I’ve been thinking of doing Hulk now that it’s established that it’s Mark Ruffalo and not Norton in that universe. If it can be done with anyone in SW it’d demonstrate proof of concept.

Author
Time

Makes sense for Hulk, not so much for Anakin. Dub him if you want, but his face is fine.

As for what makes the OT look more retro, I’d say it’s mainly down to most screen GUIs looking like they were made for a Magnavox Odyssey. Joking aside, it’s down being seemingly based on lines rather than pixels, like a more advanced version of a Game & Watch or calculator.

The Prequels feel like they should be sequels to the originals in style. Just about everything is curvy and clean. I suppose the cleanliness works if you are talking glory days of the republic. But I simply cannot believe an x-wing is more advanced than those hello Naboo fighters.
