Every Star Wars Episode makes a ton of money, it doesn’t mean anything.

Solo didn’t and now the whole idea of standalones are on hold. It does mean something.

Solo’s not an Episode.

I might get to the rest of your post later, but that one really jumped out at me.

Haha I don’t blame you man, it’s late. Rest up for the fight -ding ding-

Probably not worth it my man.

Dominic, why are you on a discussion forum if your mind is already made up?

I guess you could call me a hipster; I think the prequels are better than the originals, and I think the Beach Boys are better than the Beatles.

Not the issue, I just mean to say these points have been debated ad nauseam here and elsewhere.

I really hope that’s not true. And it’s not the just the internet. Majority of my friends (whom aren’t Star Wars fans in the first place) really didn’t care for it. I can’t recall hearing any good opinions on it the time it came out. It was always “eh”.

I get what your saying, but anecdotal information isn’t really evidence. Many of the people I know who saw the movie liked it, and I read a lot of good opinions about the movie. Does that make me right?

No one is posting videos month-after-month about how AWESOME Episode 8 was. The only people who do that are Die-Hard-Fans, and they’re not saying it was AWESOME. They keep doing this month-after-month because they care about Star Wars the most, so Disney should listen to them more.

I understand, but don’t assume since I’m making the same point I won’t be able to say it in a new way that might convince you. Labeling things before you look at then will prevent you from learning new things. Always stay open minded.

All opinions are anecdotal. That kinda defeats the purpose of this discussion. But damn, I really wanna find some people who liked it now. I knew nobody who did.

I think a sequel is a good sequel if it evokes the essence of it’s predecessor and also pushes the story forward into new territory (which Episode 8 hardly did at all).

What are you trying to convince me of exactly?

Since you seem to care, for what it’s worth I know no one who didn’t like it. Have a couple friends who disliked certain aspects, but that’s as harsh as it gets. Most of us are baffled by the backlash.

My uncle and mom didn’t like it, my brother was ambivalent. Everyone else I know liked it a lot.

Again, anecdotal, but still - plenty of people liked it, but those that didn’t seem to have felt so personally offended by the things they didn’t like that the level of vitriol toward TLJ in particular is absurdly high online.

I loved TLJ and love it more every time I watch it.

I understand why some didnt like it. I think it comes down to a few things:

  1. They didn’t like Luke’s storyline.

They just wanted to see Luke out and about taking out baddies Jedi master style.

I wanted that too, but I also can very much identify with the story we got.

  1. They don’t like misdirection in general.

They probably thought Poe was doing the right thing and were thrown off to see he wasnt.

  1. They just didn’t understand it.

Yes, it is entirely possible to fully understand TLJ and still not like it. But it doesn’t mean there isn’t a significant group that complain about the movie and make factually incorrect statements about characters and events.

  1. They just don’t like the style of the new movies.

I can relate. I didn’t like the style of the prequels.

I think over time appreciation of TLJ will grow. I have high hopes for Rian Johnson’s Trilogy. He is an excellent director and writer. I think people will be more accepting of his style when he isn’t using beloved characters previously established by someone else.

I think Rian Johnson is an interesting director. There are parts of TLJ that I absolutely love and other parts that I can’t hardly stand to watch.

But if I may make a prediction: I don’t think Rian Johnson will get further than one movie into his trilogy (if he even gets that far) before Disney shuts it down. I just don’t think there’s a very large desire for another Star Wars Trilogy among casual movie goers. And among Star Wars fans I don’t think there’s a very large desire for more Rian Johnson Star Wars movies, especially if he goes back to the same playbook of story elements he used in TLJ.

I hope I’m proven wrong and that he creates a wonderful, interesting new trilogy that does gangbusters. I think he’s a much better writer/director than The Last Jedi would indicate.

I think the biggest flaws of TLJ came from what little Abrams gave Johnson to work with. I honestly think the whole Luke plot-line, which seems to be what most SW fans who didn’t like the film complain about, was as good as it really could have been considering where Abrams ended TFA.

If Johnson gets to do a truly original SW trilogy I think it could potentially be really interesting. I think TLJ was simply too shackled by TFA’s re-use of OT ideas & iconography, especially Abram’s “Mystery-box” ending. I also don’t think Johnson works too well with “kid-friendly” material. I think if he was allowed to go in a direction more similar to Rogue One it would work a lot better. The darker aspects/moments of TLJ are IMO what worked best.

I don’t think that the “Ruin Johnson” crowd are that big to be honest, and looking at the Blu-ray sales I think it’s all blown way out of proportion. He was clearly brought on board as the Irvin Kershner creative type to create the “new ESB”, and while that kind of corporate think tank approach is questionable I enjoyed the results. They’ve given him more to do within the franchise because they must like the results, and people at LFL must like working with him. And he didn’t get fired or questioned before the final cut.

I’ve said it before, but it’s clear the biggest reason some fans were mad about TLJ was due to its being an episode (i.e. they didn’t like how existing characters were handled, were unhappy with how the saga was progressing). Given the fact that Rian is working basically from scratch, it’s highly unlikely that if he made his new film in the exact same style/tone as TLJ (which I doubt he would do anyway) that fans would be up in arms against it. I don’t think it’d be at all surprising if many fans who hated TLJ ended up loving his trilogy, as it’s likely he’ll be expanding the canon in interesting ways.

As for the general audiences, that’s definitely the big question mark. How willing and curious are they to invest in a totally random Star Wars saga, and so soon after the main saga has just had a new trilogy?

Yep, all of this.

Preproduction has started. I’m really pumped for this trilogy.

A whole trilogy of Spaceballs? Nice!

Ha! That’s funny as I’ve made pretty much the same comparison to a friend (that TLJ could be a Spaceballs remake) and his response was " that’s an insult to Spaceballs!"

Sadly, he is right.

Barely, and only in the beginning. But fair enough.
