The original Marvel Star Wars series — Page 11

Unless the cover is being a tad misleading, Valance only met Vader once, (as a bounty hunter anyway) and it was fatal for him.

But more Jaxxon? YAY!

And they couldn’t release it on May the 25th? 😉

Well, that was certainly unexpected. I love that Simonson cover, and I like how they’ve re-purposed Infantino art for the UK comic as a variant cover.

I wonder if this will be a kind of flashback story, since it says it’ll be a sequel to Crimson Fever, or if they’ve actually found a way to cram Valance, Jaxxon, Amaiza and Domina into a single story.

That was the one with the gems that caused a deadly outbreak, and a flashback story about Han (who was still frozen at the time) shed light on the mystery? Given the ending of that particular story, I wonder if it’s a direct sequel, or simply using the framework…

I’d love it if they simply called Jo Duffy and Cynthia Martin and got them to finish what they’d started. Larry Hama has been doing a GI Joe series that picks up right where the Marvel one ended, and it’s been great.

Wasn’t there some hurt feelings over a storyline Lucasfilm ordered changes to? Or was that someone else’s plot?

I’m not sure. Jo Duffy says Lucasfilm got rather imperious after RoTJ (in terms of what characters/concepts were allowed) but, beyond the suddenness of the cancellation, I’m not aware of particular plot issues. I do know JM DeMatteis had issues with the last page of his story (the one with Cody Sun-childe) which was why he was under a pseudonym when they changed it.

Refresh my memory, who cancelled the book, Marvel or Lucasfilm?

I don’t actually recall - here is a great interview with Jo Duffy if you’re interested. I had a quick flick through to see if she specifies who canned the series (I haven’t listened to this in a while and my memory’s fuzzy) but from what little I gleaned it seems both parties were eager to cancel. She says they were given half an issue to wrap up the saga they’d been working on.

Edit - at about 17.45 she says it was Marvel, not Lucasfilm who cancelled the comic!

Normally I’d be all up for bringing back the original creatives but the Duffy/Martin run really ran things into the ground. And sadly Goodwin is no longer with us.

I want to believe #108 will be a faithful throwback to the Marvel Star Wars of yesteryear, but the cynic in me suspects they’ll make it as generic and throwaway as most of the rest of Marvel’s recent output.

^ I kind of agree with this , apart from the Simonson cover , not a single one of those interior artists worked on the original series except for Kerry Gamill and that was only in a very limited capacity . I agree with the above poster who said they should continue Jo Duffy and Cindy Martin’s story . I even made a fan cover imagining how 108 would play out with Bey And Dani, which you can see here…https://www.deviantart.com/screamsinthevoid/art/Original-Marvel-Star-Wars-continues-764845812
another factor to the cancellation , I believe , is that Marvel was launching their New Universe line of comics at the time and wanted to free up resources for that .Still , pretty cool to see that new Walt Simonson cover and the return of some old friends .

Wow, didn’t know about an unreleased issue. Is there any evidence of how much of it was finished, if any pages were drawn at all?

ah , here it is …according to this site , the blurb/solicitation was in Marvel Age number 41 , which gave a description of what was originally intended to be issue 107 …http://classiccomics.org/thread/1039/star-wars-marvel-reviews-confessor?page=78&scrollTo=191103… " but a clue as to the story that she originally intended to tell in this issue can be found in an early solicitation for Star Wars #107 in Marvel Age #41. The listing describes a completely different adventure, in which Luke Skywalker is hunted on a frontier world, by a number of different assassins, all intent on becoming known as the man who killed the legendary Jedi Knight. This early solicitation also reveals that the issue was originally meant to be inked by Ken Steacy, presumably before Whilce Portacio was brought in to help with the extensive re-tooling of the artwork needed to accommodate Duffy’s hastily rewritten series finale."

My latest haul of classic SW.
I’m in London so I went back to 30th Century Comics where I got some more Star Wars Weekly magazines last year. I’ve been trying to get some of the UK exclusive stories, but they didn’t have any this time so I picked the three which I felt had the most impressive covers. I’ve always really liked the SWW #92 cover (I even photoshopped a text-less version of it and a few others a while back.)

This time I also got some American SW comics (in addition to plenty of non-SW comics). And even though I generally only collects issues from the Goodwin/Infantino run, I figured I’d make an exception for ‘Riders in the Void’ because of the amazing art (and since it’s a standalone story). Ditto on the ESB Weekly issue, though Infantino did the cover (Al Williamson’s art also looks great in B&W).

I found a bunch of those SW weekly issues here in the states back in the late 80’s at a curio shop that sold everything from antiques to old magazines. Many of the pages had been colored in by someone with magic markers, much to my annoyance.
Coincidentally, this was previously the location of a Mom & Pop toy store which was the only place I ever saw the Kenner die cast Tie Bomber in the wild. I kicked myself for never buying it. 😉

I can imagine that would be quite tempting to do as a kid. I did something similar to an illustrated book when I was like five years old. However, it actually turned out really well. I’m guessing you weren’t so lucky?

Managed to get another issue of Star Wars Weekly during my last day in the UK.

I bought the other 2/3 of the “Princess Alone” story last year, and finally got to “complete” the story.

I’ve always really liked this story. Not only was it nice to the Leia do a “solo” mission for a change, but it was interesting to get to see the more “Orwellian” aspects of the Empire, especially in a story so early on in SW history. In many ways it’s a lot darker than most of what followed in the EU later on.

eBay has been kind to me. Recently purchased issues 3, 5, 6, 9, 18, and 49 all for a decent price (my collection beforehand was just 8, 12, 15, and 24).

Oh and also I got an original number 1.

Neat. I’ve been trying to get some of the movie adaptation issues myself, but they’re always a bit out of my price range (at least as far as what I’m willing to spend on single issues).

I’ve occasionally used eBay to find some of the more obscure comics I’m after (and gotten lucky a few times), but I try avoid it as I enjoy visiting comic shops whenever I’m abroad.

Are you collecting any specific issues, story-arcs, etc. or just grabbing any orig. Marvel SW you can get your hands on?

I think that’s the story that planted the idea in my mind THX-1138 could fit into the SW universe somehow. 😃

Yeah there’s a threshold for me for issues where I won’t pay past a certain price (I try not to spend more than $10 on an individual issue if I can help it) and usually when I see them they’re beyond that threshold. It’s nice when you get them in lots on eBay because they’re ultimately cheaper than when sold individually. I was really lucky with a bid on number 1 and got it for $25.

I’ve occasionally used eBay to find some of the more obscure comics I’m after (and gotten lucky a few times), but I try avoid it as I enjoy visiting comic shops whenever I’m abroad.

I love visiting comic shops, but I tend to find you can get better deals on eBay if you’re patient and vigilant. At the very least eBay is helpful to get a sense of whether a comic I’ve found at a shop or a convention (where I got a couple) is more or less expensive than usual.

Are you collecting any specific issues, story-arcs, etc. or just grabbing any orig. Marvel SW you can get your hands on?

At first many years ago I was gifted 12, and found a 15 at an antique shop and thought it looked cool (hadn’t read any at that point). By now I’ve read most of the series through collected paperbacks. I’m not really sure what I want to collect but I really love the series so I’ve been thinking recently it’d be fun to collect select favorite issues. I’d love to complete that first 1-6 set and then I’ll probably get 7 too since I have 8 and 9. From there I’m not sure, there are a handful of others I’d like to have but I am worried that it’s a slippery slope into eventually collecting more than my wallet can handle.
