While we’re talkin’ lightsabers, the only thing that bothers me is that they always make the bad guy have a red one. And only the bad guys have red ones. That’s dumb.

It’s the end result of a dumb “black n red r evul” mentality.

If not and you can’t be bothered stuffing around with compatibility workarounds or VMs, you can get it on Steam along with some bundle options. They’ve all actually got 70%+ discount right now:

Jedi Knight Dark Forces 2 is still my favourite Star Wars game of all time.

It is actually not that difficult. My old Jedi Knight CD Version runs perfect on my Windows 7 PC.

Rogue One is redundant. Just play the first mission of DARK FORCES.

“Rey being a Palpatine was unnecessary/pointless and undermined her character arc in TLJ and the message that ‘bloodlines are not a requirement to be Force-sensitive’.”

There’s something really cheeky about putting this in this thread, but I can’t put it into words. I was gonna say that it was super ballsy to call it baffling when, even if you disagree with them, there are pretty reasonable criticisms of Rey Palpatine. But that’s a little subjective, isn’t it?

Maybe it has to do with the quality of the argument in favor. Because you literally say “Sure, Rey has gotten over her parents by the end of TLJ, but she didn’t get over her grandparents” in the thread you linked.

TestingOutTheTest said:

Of course, Rey comes to terms with the truth in TLJ and stops caring about her parents, but just because she stopped caring about them doesn’t indicate as to whether she cares about her grandparents or not.

Sure. It’s the people who are against the decision to make Rey a Palpatine who are baffling.

I’m saying she never really focused on or thought of her grandparents at all in the first place. She’s relying on her parents because she believes that the only way she could’ve been abandoned is if she was worthless — after all, parents are supposed to care for you and nurture you, and only truly worthless people deserve to be abandoned.

I prefer Greedo shooting first rather than Han. I never understood how it undermined Han’s character, when in fact it reinforces his selfishness, he’s so selfish he’s willing to preserve his own life. Whereas in TFA, he’s become so selfless he’s willing to reach out to his son in the worst of all locations, at the cost of his own life.

Well, I guess this thread is back.

ANH: The first act on Tatooine being too slow or taking too long. The slow buildup works fantastically to introduce us to the characters and the setting, laying a strong groundwork on which the story can expand. It’s my favorite part of the movie, and that’s saying something.

RotJ: That Luke’s personality became too stoic or monk-like in this movie. It’s clear in the movie that his stoic persona is more of a mask he wears when the situation calls for it. He’s still an emotional person who cares deeply about the people in his life. He’s just developed greater restraint and self-discipline.

TPM: The film having too much politics. I’ll admit that the Jedi Council scenes are needlessly dull, but I do like getting a glimpse of the Senate, and I love seeing Palpatine’s manipulation at work. I wish the scenes were directed better, and they do contribute to TPM’s identity crisis as a film (whether it wants to be a kid-friendly adventure movie or a movie about political intrigue), but there’s nothing inherently wrong with having those scenes present in a Star Wars film.

RotS: That the film tries too hard to segue directly into the OT. I actually wish it had done more to establish the status quo we see in ANH (the deleted scenes about dissident senators meeting would have helped with that), showing the seeds of rebellion and such. Showing the Death Star at the end may have been too much, though, and maybe having Palpatine coming out and blatantly declaring “We’re an empire now!” was too on-the-nose.

TLJ: That Kylo destroys his mask. At the start of TFA, we’re introduced to a Kylo who is mysterious, intimidating, and threatening in the eyes of the audience. By the end of TFA, he is none of those things. I liked the fact that Snoke lampshades this when he chides Kylo for his failure, pointing out how that Kylo’s not the menacing Dark Lord he pretends to be. Kylo couldn’t go back and resume that shadowy persona, because the audience and the heroes would see right through it. He couldn’t regain that lost intimidation factor. So, the best option was for him to ditch the mask and develop his character without it.

But we can’t turn back. Fear is their greatest defense. I doubt if the actual security there is any greater than it was on Aquilae or Sullust. And what there is is most likely directed towards a large-scale assault.

Concerning that last point, the fact that Kylo rebuilds his mask, Rey rebuilds her lightsaber, and Luke catches it…so many people read it as a middle finger to TLJ without really understanding how it actually builds upon it. TFA is the thesis where things are presented, TLJ is the antithesis where they are violently broken down, and TRoS is the synthesis where they are put back together. It’s about characters being broken down and rebuilt stronger, like how a sword must be soften by the fire before being hardened.

Just because Palpatine is alive in TROS, doesn’t mean the Sith aren’t extinct anymore. In fact, they are. Palpatine specifically wants to resurrect the Sith from extinction: “And with a stroke of her saber, the Sith are REBORN! The Jedi are dead!” “Do not fear their feeble attack, my faithful. Nothing will stop the RETURN of the Sith!”

Oh I get it, the rebuilding of the mask/saber/whatever isn’t at issue. My TROS rewrite even has a remade saber. The issue here is how badly it was handled in TROS. Rey’s saber is rebuilt offscreen with barely a hint of the damage it sustained and no mention of that damage in the film. Kylo’s mask, far from being reforged as a symbol of Kylo’s status as a new leader of the First Order, is instead a symbol of his regression back into a mere henchmen for a greater power.

TROS makes a mockery of the Dialectic tradition of Star Wars.

Except its literal belt serves as a reminder of Rey’s failure in TLJ, and how much she’s grown from that.

Except Kylo does not serve Palpatine. He literally tells Rey “I have other plans” and asks for her help in defeating him on the hangar.

For once I have to agree with TestingOutTheTest here. While I get Kylo sorta in a sense cooperates with Palpatine briefly, it’s a far cry from the master/apprentice dynamic we’re used to.

Granted that has absolutely nothing to do with the mask so I have absolutely no idea why Testing brought it up. It’s a good argument for a completely different debate.

Tackling both “TROS doesn’t pay off Luke inspiring hope in TLJ” and “the galaxy fleet showing up doesn’t feel earned” at once…

In TLJ the galaxy and even the Resistance has lost all hope, only for Luke Skywalker to show up suddenly, right at the last second, and then he inspires hope across the galaxy. TROS only happens after TLJ, so it isn’t hard to draw a connection between the two - they’re only rising up because LUKE inspired them.
