Solo - A Star Wars Edit (Released)

UPDATE: Well, some of you asked me if I did anything about the colour. And now I have! I replaced my source with TheMovieMan’s release. And wow, what a change. I didn’t realise how dark the original was before I compared the two. So there you have it. V2 is up on googledrive as we speak.
And if I may say so myself, it’s a goddamn great movie now!

Go ahead and PM me for a download link - and please write a review afterwards. I would love some feedback on my work.

Original post:
First of all, “Solo – A Star Wars Story” is a great and funny movie, but I forgot how annoyed I was with some small (and some big) things in it as I re-watched it when it hit blu-ray. In my frustration over no one had made a Fan Edit, I spend my weekend cutting it to pieces. This is my first edit of a full motion picture, and I made it mainly for myself – but if any of you guys want it, pm me.

Its not a perfect edit, and most of the time spend with it, was used on rendering.
Especial the soundtrack could use much more attention, but I simply don’t have the equipment to do it. And therefor there’s only a stereo track.

About the edit:
I felt like there was no reason for too much origin story for Han, so much of the first act in the movie has been cut. No mention of Quira before we meet her at Drydens. Now she is simply a (mysterious) girl from Hans past, that he’ll get to work with, and fall a little in love with. So all references to that part of the movie has been cut.

Han is simply on the run from some troubles and decides to join the empire to become a pilot so he can learn to be a pilot, make some money, and be his own landlord. It feels like a “if you can’t beat’em, join’em” -kinda moment.

I can’t remember all the cuts I’ve made, but here a most of them:

No introduction text after “a long time ago”
No Quira before we meet her at Drydens.
No Han gets his last name from some random Empire employee.
Added the deleted scene where he gets demoted to the infantry.
No “three years later”
Cut most of Han speaking wookie.
When formerly introduced to Chewie, I cut out Han saying “Chewbacca”, as it sounded patronizing in my ears the way he says it.
Cut the awkward kiss between Val and Becket.
No Han getting the blaster from Becket.
Some Enfys Nest speaks have been muted, and Beckets outburst “ENFYS NEST!” is gone as well.
Val don’t sacrifice herself stupidly – now shes just blown up by the droids.
Some small cuts at Drydens, mostly because of Quira.
And now enter the biggest issue with the movie L3…. Oh my god she’s annoying… So all through my edit, I have cut out as much as I could of her dialog.
AND NO hints at a L3 + Lando sexing it up in the Falcon.
The droid uprising is cut to a minimum.
Lando making a VLOG on his Instagram/snapchat is out.
A small cut before Lando says “oh sh***t”.
Beckets mention of Tatooine is gone”
Darth Maul keep his lightsaber in his pants, but is still there – seriously watch Clone Wars and Rebels!
And finally, the lucky dices is not in this movie.

Runtime: 1:55:18 (Credits starts rolling at 1:46:43)

I salute you at taking a stab at Solo. I would also be curious to view it as well.

I was really disappointed in this film after walking out of the theater. But I gave it another watch on Netflix the other night, and I found myself really enjoying most of it.

I’ll definitely be checking this out before attempting an edit of my own.

I like the list of cuts, particularly the smaller ones I agree with most. I’ll definitely be making a lot of similar cuts if I ever get around to it. As well as a few other extraneously over the top or tongue in cheek moments.

I personally enjoy the backstory opening, but I admit it wasn’t handled all that gracefully so I’ll be interested in seeing how it feels without it.

And there was a good character there deep down with L3, they just went way too far with it, so definitely agree with trimming her time down a bit. Additionally (and I think I’m in the minority when I say) I just didn’t buy Donald Glover as Lando, so I plan on trimming some of his non-essential screentime. He just has too many cheesy moments that draw unnecessary attention to his swag and I think a less is more approach would help make him feel more in line with Billy D.

Congrats on the first full edit. I have yet to finish a single edit ever, some of them started years ago haha

Where can we get the edit? Is there a PM that you can send?

Count me interested in watching. I like that you kept Darth Maul, I feel like I’m one the the few people who didn’t mind his inclusion, even though the lightsaber was gratuitous.

I like it a lot. You cut L3 just right, where her personality is still similar, but she’s not so annoying. The color correction is subtle, but works pretty well.
Cutting so much of the beginning felt kind of strange at first, but I see why you did it. It makes Han’s past more mysterious as it doesn’t show why he has to leave Corellia or who exactly is chasing him. The title card seems to go a bit too quick though, where you’ll almost miss it if you blink.
Overall I’d say this is pretty good, especially for a first edit, and fixes some of the problems with, what I think is, an underrated Star Wars movie.

Was only able to check the file for playability before I left for work, but is anyone else having aspect ratio issues (2.40:1 vertically stretched to 1.78:1) or is that just MPC-HC/something else on my end?

I’ve been having problems downloading it on my office computer, I’ll need to try it when I get home and use that one!

ChainsawAsh: It looks like it should on my Macbook, and on my TV (Kodi).

Jarbear: Well, it’s a 15gb file, so it might take a while.

And thanks for the feedback Zachary and ForceGhostRecon 😉

Watched a bit of it last night from a flash drive on my Samsung TV, and the aspect ratio was correct, so I dunno what MPC-HC was doing there.

I like what I saw so far!

I ditched VLC in favor of MPC-HC just this past year when I discovered VLC is garbage for 4K video, so I sure hope it isn’t dead!

Just a minor thing: why is the Lucasfilm logo and ALTAIAGFFA title card at the beginning of this film so much smaller than the others?? When I watched it the first time, which was at home, I thought it was configured incorrectly.

My stance on revising fan edits.

No, it’s like that in both Solo and Rogue One. I noticed it in theaters for RO, too.

I thought so too. One more way to differentiate the standalones from the saga, I guess, but it’s still odd.

I remember being relieved that TLJ used the correct sizes (and then subsequently annoyed that the opening theme was just as anemic as TFA’s).

It’s not only you I just downloaded it and it’s that way for me on MPC-HC as well. That’s how I prefer watching my movies as well. Maybe it’s some kind of glitch???
