How stupid am I as I was put off watching the GOUT Trilogy which I’ve owned for 12yrs because it was a small image in the middle of my TV screen. So I sought out the many other far superior OT versions i have now as I discovered them. But thanks to finding a custom zoom feature i didn’t know TVs had i can now happily watch the GOUT versions the way I’d always want to see them.
While this does solve the anamorphic problem it doesn’t solve the motion blur but at least it looks nice when played in a Blu Ray player.
my 92 widescreen vhs box set trilogy also looks awesome on my Samsung slimfit widescreen 38 inch crt tv , via my panasonic hi-fi 4 head vcr , no zoom feature needed

^I am in agreement here …the movies I saw in 77,80,and 83 had some scratches and grain on them and were not in HD in the theatre

The Despecialized Editions are Astonishing and I’m thrilled to have them and will get the 3.0 versions when they’re available but i will always prefer the 35mm Preservations

That’s not how the term “HD” works. Also note that some HD video tranfers have grain and occasionally some scratches.

Well, technically. But comparing film to HD at all is a flawed concept at that point. My point was that grain and damage aren’t a factor when comparing resolution, which HD refers to.

But you absolutely need to do a HD scan if you want to capture all the details that are on film.
A lot of people think wrongly that old films aren’t HD no need for blu-ray when those old films do look far better on blu-ray.

So is this why the GOUT and the SSE look like they do? Or is the gout different in some way?
The GOUT is just a low-resolution early 90s master from Lucasfilm (so, ostensibly, from earlier generation sources like the O-neg or separation masters). The SSE is based on release prints, I believe. They’re entirely different.
I would put this in my sig if I weren’t so lazy.

The GOUT transfers were done in 1993 from interpositives struck from the o-neg in 1985.
