SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE first aired on the ABC Network in February of 1982.

The broadcast would later become known as the Extended Television Cut.

Captured by fans on Beta and VHS tape, until home video, Laserdisc and DVD release this is how SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE, for years, would be known to viewers around the world.

The Extended Television Cut and later the 2001 Special Edition, otherwise known as the Directors Cut, are all that have been available to fans apart from the digitally restored editions on Bluray released in 2006 and 2011.

With the upcoming 4K Ultra HD release, there still remains a void in delivering to fans a version of SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE in its original theatrical form.

While alternate cuts are nothing new in the industry, these alternate versions are nothing more than curiousity that never truly capture the original theatrical experience.

SUPERMAN: THE MOVIE The 35mm SILVER SCREEN EDITION is an attempt to re-capture that experience. A restored 35mm transfer that looks and sounds like a film.

This sounds awesome

Thank you. Will have it up shortly. The goal of this version of the film is to marry the original 2.0 stereo sound mix, which is how most people saw it theatrically when it was released, with a 35mm quality print of the film devoid of nearly all the digital restoration done over the years. This project was inspired by the fine folks at Team Negative 1 and their work on the original Star Wars trilogy.

I wonder if this is the same as:
[redacted]

That version seemed to be a fake one, where they just put
grain over the bluray edition.

I haven’t heard of anyone scanning the movie, maybe over
at AMPS someone might know.

Already have it, but again, seems fake.

What’s the point of this again? Are we saying the 4k won’t look like film? Or be the definitive theatrical version?

This is that version but it’s not a fake. The print used is not from the 2001 Special Edition which was ported over to Bluray. No grain was added either. Watch the sizzle reel again and you’ll see it’s not simply the current Bluray made to look like an older version of itself. The sources are completely different.

There’s no guarantee that the 4K will preserve the print as it appeared in 1978 although the original 6-track Dolby Stereo mix was upgraded to 7.1. The 35mm Silver Screen Edition is an attempt to preserve the film as it looked and sounded in 2.0 Stereo as most saw it when it was first released. The source print was not the standard Bluray which is typically what is made available for home purchase.

FULL LINK COMING SOON.

Don’t put a direct link on the forum, it has to be shared privately. Are you re-encoding this from the source files? Because the 15.2 GB version is available as a direct link on capedwonder.com but the compression is awful it needs to be re-done from the master files.

It’s not fake, but it’s not a private scan either. They (ITHoTMK I’m guessing?) took an existing transfer of the film (probably a telecine for broadcast I’m guessing) and reconfigured it to be theatrical by inserting shots from other sources. But the compression was awful - the 15.2GB capedwonder direct link still works. Hopefully ITHoTMK is re-encoding it properly to bluray bitrate in which case it should look a lot better than the original encode.

Whether it actually came from a “print” is debatable - if it did it came from a telecine master print, not from a theatrical print. There’s way too much detail in the dark areas for it to have come from a theatrical print.

Awful. Okay. That was just a web compressed version. There is obviously a higher quality version both uncompressed and one encoded for those who want to burn it to Bluray. But based on this post I don’t think I will be sharing it privately.

I didn’t mean to offend, just to say the 15GB version was badly compressed (not surprising given the size and the length of the film). I’ve seen worse though as well, and those were “completed projects”. I’m sorry if I came off as rude, I’ve had a bad week which started with my cat being attacked by a dog.

That’s all well and good. No offence taken. A lot of work went into the project with assistance from various sources. I think this one is best held back until possibly after the 4K UHD version is released.

Agreed. If the 4k is as good as we’re all expecting it to be and from the original negative, that would render this project useless.

Even if the 4K is from original sources, if they’ve pushed the grading beyond what was capable in 1978 I’d consider it disappointment. I’m not interested in a digitally polished product ridding all evidence of the camera negative. It’s about retaining the original aesthetic without the wear and tear of repeated performances.

I want the same thing to happen with the unaltered Trilogy of Star Wars.

Until then these kinds of private projects are best served by being supported instead of attacked. I’ve read quite a few or your comments to others on this forum and you seem incredibly quick to denounce many peoples efforts. Granted, the quality of some of these projects leaves much to be desired. I’d suggest viewing them and moving on if you don’t like them. Overall, these kinds of projects do more good than harm particularly when companies are made aware of assets they otherwise thought were dead were being shared and celebrated. That’s just my opinion.

I think he confused you with another member who I’ve had the same issue with in the past (shitting on other people’s work in a non-constructive way - not going to name them here). Not sure why he thinks that’s you, since you express support and enthusiasm for other people’s work frequently.

Or he read some of your posts about the sequel trilogy/post-Disney Star Wars material and is conflating that negativity with your opinions of fan projects. Not sure.

I downloaded the file from Bower’s website. I would LOVE to have a better version of the file. Always loved the old look of the film with all its faults. It just made it all the more beautiful in a strange way. I hope to be able to download this version at some point. Any addition to my Superman film collection is a positive one. Much credit to all who have given time, resources etc to this project. That is why I love being part of this community!

Was the suit really that deep a blue in the 35mm prints? If so, then that’s completely different to any home release I’ve seen and also to pictures of the costume on display all of which show it as being at least slightly teal.

I took a look at the 15 GB version and the compression isn’t even that bad. Certainly within passable. Looks very cool, I’ll have to sit down and watch the whole thing some time. I hope you finish a higher quality encode.

I am curious, what actually are the video sources that were used for this?

THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.
