I have both but I think that the vhs seems to be a lot better quality wise than the gout. Not sure what you all think.

This question is preposterous…
Of course the GOUT…
I would put this in my sig if I weren’t so lazy.
Why not the VHS?
I prefer the 92 vhs box set over the 95 faces vhs set , I am not a fan of the blue tie fighter lasers in the asteroid chase
Why not the VHS?
Because VHS has objectivly inferior picture quality.

I’m a sucker for VHS tapes yet I know their quality is inferior.
^ me too , though I admit nostalgia plays a factor for me . That and I found an old 13 inch tv/vcr combo at a Goodwill for five bucks about seven years ago and started collecting vhs tapes because of it .Then my neighbor moved out and gave me about 100 or so tapes , some still in the shrink wrap . I also like to collect the hard plastic clamshell vhs movies from the early 80’s ( I have the first two Rambo movies like this ) as well as box sets . I have come to like the softer look of them .
I have the THX certified ones
It’s the same master. The only difference is that the GOUT is pretty much the highest possible quality that you can squeeze from that particular master.
GOUT is simply a DVD release of Faces.
^ not sure this is entirely true …how do you explain the blue tie fighter lasers during the asteroid chase in Empire on the faces vhs ? it is not on the gout . the colors overall look a lot more vivid to me on the 95 vhs in comparison to the gout and less grainy
VHS>GOUT

You’re really going to have to tell us why. There is no reason why this could plausibly be the case.

VHS has no motion smearing that I can notice, it has superior sound and visual quality, it has awesome cover art, it is anamorphic and it doesn’t include the SE with it.

VHS has no motion smearing that I can notice
maybe check the soap-opera effect settings on your DVD player
it has superior sound and visual quality
Objectively false
it has awesome cover art
besides the point
it is anamorphic
VHS is not anamorphic…
and it doesn’t include the SE with it.

I’m not talking about the regular faces, I’m talking about the THX certified version. That and I feel like you’re trying to fight me. Please stop if you are.

There is no version of the Faces set that ISN’T THX certified. As outdated as those masters were by 2006, they looked much better on the GOUT than on any VHS.
Nah man, the motion smearing is only mitigated due to the objectively inferior visual fidelity of VHS. Since DVD is a clearer, sharper picture, the DNR smearing becomes more apparent.
I’ll give you audio, though - it’s the same mix, but analog HiFi on the VHS and compressed 192kbps AC3 on the DVD.
For the 1993 telecine master, which is the same master used for the Definitive Collection laserdisc, the Faces VHS and laserdisc releases, and the GOUT DVD:
Video: DVD > LD > VHS
Audio: LD > VHS > DVD
And that’s pretty much objective fact. You might prefer the VHS because the format’s deficiencies hide some of the master’s inherent flaws, but it’s not actually better than the GOUT DVD release.
As for which of the LD releases of the 1993 master is better (DC or Faces), I couldn’t say as I don’t own a laserdisc player.
Honestly I prefer the LDs because they hide the issues in the master.
I think I see what some are saying here about the vhs hiding some deficiencies in the master , I said it before and I think it bears repeating that the type of display plays a big part too . VHS Faces set looks very vivid and crisp on a crt tv whereas it looks faded on a modern display .The gout looks grainy and faded to my eyes either way .The guy in this video is playing the faces tapes on a couple of crt tv’s on a high quality vcr and it looks pretty damn good to me …https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QZOUB4gZ0I Now , I know it is in fullscreen but the colors really pop and hi fi analog stereo sound trumps dgital in my book .by way of comparison , here is a sample of the 2006 Gout bonus disc…https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYCK6-MCn5Q the colors are much more desaturated .Also , does the definitive collection laserdisc have the blue tie fighter lasers in the asteroid chase scene from Empire that the faces tape has ?
VHS and LD copies particularly when viewed on a CRT screen do hide some deficiencies in the master but not all. Those formats are also very player dependent as all are not equal in their output quality.
However as someone who owns the major releases on VHS and LD I can say:
The older master done for the JSC and released on VHS in the widescreen collector’s box and on LD as the Fox Special Widescreen Editions are far better than the later versions based on the Definitive Collection master as they have none of the issues with drained color, DVNR and motion smearing. I have done many comparisons between formats over the years as I picked up new variants. The VHS copies are quite good for that format but the letterboxed ones while properly formatted lose a lot of detail since the resolution is eaten up by letterboxing bars.
But the Laserdiscs are the only way to go if wanting to watch older copies pre-GOUT. The audio is full PCM and while VHS hifi Dolby surround can be great it still won’t compare to full 16 bit 44.1 khz PCM. If you’re sticking to this era then I would advise the Fox original widescreen discs as you save a lot over not getting the original Japanese discs. The Definitive set is nice and full CAV but has all the DC master problems and most boxes have rot issues. The Faces sets are better due to not having rot but are CLV and some are Super NTSC encoded.
That said even though the older master is a tad soft, the DC and Faces are noticeably softer even on a CRT screen and I personally hate the motion smearing and washed out look.
I grew up with seeing these over and over and always wondered why different rental copies appeared so different to one another.
Lastly Laserdiscs usually originated masters in the pre-DVD era and then that master would be ported to the VHS release.
