Anyone want to start pooling money on this like how it was done for Episode II 35mm a few weeks ago? It’s quite an exciting time for Prequel fans 😃

Would the crawl and credits be in German?

Where were you in '77?

Probably yes for the opening crawl.
But I guess it shows the theatrical colors and cut…

ROTS is probably the least important of the pre-Disney films to get scanned, as the one difference from the DLP theatrical to DVD was an optical wipe that was restored on the BR, and Schorman has made a theatrical reconstruction using the BR wipe with the HDTV video (to remove the few minor BR changes) and paired it with the theatrical DTS audio, so we have ROTS in its theatrical form in 1080p already.

Having said that, it would still be neat to have 35mm scans of every Star Wars film!

Plus, does anyone know if there were any 35mm-to-DLP differences for ROTS like there were with AOTC?

Yes, ROTS is the one with the fewest differences.
But AFAIK, there are other changes than this wipe :

  • Wookie huts have extra details (moss and rust) on their rooftops (to make them look older)
  • at the end, a different wipe and shorter “Noooo!” from Vader
  • (some dialogues were changed or added, but this point is probably not relevant on a German version)

I may be wrong but I think that for $200, it’s worth saving it, if only for the color references and the 35mm grain.

Right, but going from the HDTV as a source, the wipe is the only thing that needs to be fixed (using the Blu-ray) as far as I know.

As others have said, though, it’s an interesting novelty.

Yep, the 2005 DLP theatrical version has been restored using the HDTV to replace the visual changes on the BR, the BR itself for the missing wipe in the HDTV version, and the theatrical DTS audio, which negates the BR audio changes.

However, there’s still the possibility of undocumented 35mm changes, so it’s not like there’s absolutely zero value in a 35mm scan - just a much lower one than any of the other pre-Disney films.

There was a leaked copy that came out just before the film hit theaters. It lacks end credits, but is otherwise a good representation of the film in its original release. It is the same as the DVD/HD version except that one wipe (Which we have in the Blu-ray. So the only value in ROTS on 35 mm would be to see the colors and and have the grain.

Since the prequels were shot in digital 1080p, I believe, if you zoom in on a 35mm print of 1080p digital do you still see the pixels? I guess what I am getting at is, would it be better to make a 4k version of ROTS from upscaling the blu ray or from a print?

Thanks

I think that ROTS is semi-worth restoring using 35mm. Guess it all depends on how much you want it. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Did we scoop it? Looks like only one bidder.
