Django Prepare a Coffin – One of the only Django “sequels” that has any resemblance to the original. It’s not great, but you can do worse for the genre. I’m excited for Arrow Video’s new release of the original later this year.

Well, I just watched Ghost in the shell (1995) for the second time, and I love it even more!

It took me twice to fully understand it, but maybe that’s just because I lost interest around two thirds of the way through the first time.

This movie is a smorgasbord of ineptitude; Brigitte Nielsen can’t act, William Mesa can’t direct, Nick Davis can’t write, and most everything else exists on a spectrum of middling to embarrassing. On the plus side, Ms. Nielsen’s an Amazonian sexpot and Richard Moll is absolutely scrumptious in his supreme hamminess, so there’s no way in hell I could dislike this movie.

The Killing

An incredibly well executed and entertaing heist movie with a classic ending.

Kubrick really is the best at everything he tries.

His Girl Friday. I don’t usually like to assign movies ratings, but this was an instant 5-star film for me. The structure is perfect, the dialogue is hilarious, the energy is constantly high, and the deeper meaning present without being overbearing. I’ll go so far as to say I vastly prefer it to The Philadelphia Story, though Jimmy Stewart and Katharine Hepburn make that film.

I haven’t seen a bad Audrey Hepburn film. So many of them are kind of similar, but I just love them. Charade, How to Steal a Million, Sabrina, Roman Holiday, Wait Until Dark

The only one I didn’t particularly care for was My Fair Lady, strangely enough, considering it’s much more well known and beloved than most of the ones I just listed. Haven’t seen Breakfast at Tiffany’s. However, I just ordered Two for the Road on Blu-ray, and I expect it to be great as well.

Until this year, the only ones I’d ever seen were My Fair Lady and Always. I didn’t necessarily dislike either (well, Always does kinda suck) but I never felt the urgency to watch more right away. But then this year I watched one (Tiffany’s), and have now seen all but one of the ones you mentioned. Great stuff.

Spuun Killer’s Kiss from the extras tonight. Not bad, though perhaps a tad lame.

Which version of Close Encounters should I watch? I want more subjective advice rather than suggestions based on principle, i.e. I don’t want “Watch this version because it’s the theatrical,” or “Watch this one because it’s the director’s vision,” etc. I’m just curious what the most watchable one is.

Either theatrical or Director’s Cut. The Special Edition has a studio-mandated extended ending that’s garbage - it was forced on Spielberg as a condition for giving him the budget to shoot new scenes.

The theatrical cut is still good, but feels slightly incomplete. The Director’s Cut is the best, most balanced version IMO, taking the new material shot from the Special Edition, restoring some theatrical scenes that were cut in the SE, and restoring the theatrical cut ending. But it’s not like the material missing from the theatrical cut completely cripples the movie the way it does in something like Kingdom of Heaven, for instance.

Okay. I think I’ll watch the theatrical first and then the director’s cut. If I love the movie then I’ll check out the SE too, but I hate studio meddling so I’ll save that one for last.

I can’t argue with this, though I will second Ash’s statement about the DC being the best cut. I actually haven’t watched the theatrical in a while since I watch the DC every time. Should go back to that some time.

PLEASE DON’T

But really, the extended ending in the SE can potentially ruin the movie depending on how you feel about it. As a big fan of this movie, I actually regret watching that ending. I’d say just turn it off before the end.

Just encouraged me to order Close Encounters. The 4k set is only $15 bucks right now on Amazon.

Also ordered Liberty Valence, which has been sitting in my cart for awhile now.

That’s what got me to do it. I wanted all the different versions and the features in one case and that’s what I got.

My reasoning with watching the theatrical first is because it sounds like both cuts are great, the latter is just an improvement. So I might as well see it how it was originally first. I just wanted to make sure that it wasn’t like Bladerunner where there is very little reason other than curiosity to watch the theatrical cut.

I don’t know, if I really like the movie then my curiosity is going to get me to at least look up the ending. Even if I hated it I don’t think that it could ruin the movie for me. We’ll see.

Yep, this is pretty much it. Another thing is the TC has some more comedy than the other two versions.

Watch one of the other versions first. The SE ending keeps going after the TC and DC versions end. Ask yourself if you really want to see an interpretation of what happens after.

Excellent choice. I’ve been getting into westerns lately myself. There’s a local TV station that plays Gunsmoke like 3 times a day. What a great show.

I like westerns but don’t watch enough. And I’ve been on a B&W kick lately. So it seemed a natural choice.

I wasn’t saying that you shouldn’t watch the theatrical first, just agreeing that the DC is best.

Yeah listen to Ash on that. If you really like the movie and you don’t want to see what might happen after it ends, just don’t risk ruining it. Spielberg said that adding that ending was one of the biggest mistakes of his career.

Oceans 8

It was fine but very much felt like the fourth movie of its kind and not terribly original.

Mission Impossible: Fallout

Like all Mission Impossible movies this has a very fast driving plot which is probably overly intricate and confusing but let’s be honest as long as I keep being entertained I don’t care too much about what’s happening when or why. It was good but not great. the main thing against it in my book is that I’m a little tired of Ethan Hunt and his savior complex. Or is it Tom Cruise that has the Savior complex?
