maybe it was a bluray frame in SSE 1.6?

Only missing LPP frames were replaced with the bluray.

I didn’t work on this section of the film for the SSE, but chances are good that the guy who graded it was consulting other post '85 sources during the color grading - like the GOUT and the Japanese Special Collection - and none of these references had this brightness so it was ‘corrected’ for the SSE.

Both the GOUT and the Blu-Ray have the extended brightness:

Not for the entire shot - Bottom right is NTSC GOUT:

“Diplomatic mission to Alderaan” is how Leia describes it a few minutes later. The choked rebel only ever says “diplomatic mission”, and AFAIK, that line has never been any different.

When Luke shoots down the tie fighter in Battle of Yavin.

This explosion is blown out in all releases apart from the GOUT.

I noticed that when the explosion occurs the star field dims down a bit in the GOUT. In all the others the starfield maintains it’s brightness but the explosion looks awful and totally blown out.

The GOUT is superior to any other version in regards to detail that I have seen so far… Does the starfield dim in this version and explosion has proper detail?

It seems to be some kind of post processing error or brightness issue.

Would you consider Luma key the detail in from the GOUT for the explosion if the star field stays bright? or Luma key in the Stars around the Gout explosion?

you can briefly see a decent version of it also in Krieg de stern trailer although it’s keyed in through a Star Wars Logo. It come out with a red edge but i think it may be meant to be quite yellowish red. It basically has no color really in any version apart from the GOUT.

There is a chance the 35mm 97 version of star wars has detail to it.

Many cockpit shots require a bluescreen key and remove spill to fix the obvious spillages. Handy tip on what to decide on color for shots. It was something i found worked well to remove color that is not meant to be there.

Well, the DNR version of 4K77 is available now. Aside from the grain management (which I think is very well done), I really like the other work done for this release. Extra cleanup and patches here and there, a lot of the red light-leak flashes from later in the film dealt with, good cropping and stabilization, removed reel change markers, etc.

And, most importantly for me, really gorgeous color and contrast. Thank you, Williarob and everyone else, for the enormous effort on this. This is great.

The subtle pink cast has been completely removed, which is great, but I kinda like the grain. Is there any possibility of releasing a version of 4K77 with the colour timing of the DNR version and film grain? It would be the best of both worlds.

There’s one on the spleen, 4K77 - DrDre’s Single Reel Color Correction - 1080p No DNR. Not sure how similar it is to the DNR version.

I’d very much like such a version as well.

So would I, but I’m afraid it’s not that simple. I took the original release and ran it through After Effects for Denoising, then Phoenix for additional cleanup and PF Clean for shot by shot color correction. It went through After Effects again for additional scene by scene color correction to arrive at RC1 (the first private beta release). Then the output from RC1 had a second round of shot by shot color correction (almost every shot in the film) to get to the final release.

So to get to roughly the same place colorwise, at the very least I have to render it all out to DPX again (this time without the DNR), run it through my PF Clean project again, and then render it out of not one but two After Effects project files.

^ Understood. I thought that the color work had preceded the clean-up.

How big is the 1080p DNR fileset?

I’ll need to tidy up my hard drive!
