Watchmen (2009)

5/10

Had a lot of pretty good moments but a tasteless sex scene and overly edgy main character brought it down.

Zach Snyder & Alan Moore are a bad combination.

What about a combo with another already bad thing? I ask because he’s working on a film of The Fountainhead, so while a combo of bad things, it’s also a perfect combo.

I liked Watchmen. But I only saw the TV edit.

Snyder sympathizes with Objectivism? As if his filmmaking wasn’t a great enough sin. . . .

I rather like the “Midnight” fan edit of the Ultimate Cut.

But not as good as the Barnes and Noble sales… most of the time.

Not necessarily. Amazon prices of Criterions are usually only a few dollars more expensive than the Barnes and Noble sale prices. It adds up if you’re buying multiple things, but if you want the movie without having to wait for the next sale it makes sense.

I thought you didn’t like 2 because of Doc Ock having human motivations?

Kubrick’s amateurish debut. It’s actually inspiring that he made this, because a rough start didn’t stop him from becoming, well, Kubrick. 4/10

I expected a bed with a giant mouth that ate its victims. I got a bed that secreted acid that made chewing noises for some reason. 3/10

Easily the best and most exciting film of the franchise. 8/10

10/10

90s Oscar Bait with great performances and the legendary Bergman collaborator Sven Nyquist behind the camera. 6/10

Some friends were pirating it watching it and I sat with them for a while. Got a few chuckles out of me, but I still find Deadpool (in this film and outside of it and in general) to be annoying. 5/10

Watched in theater class. Interesting, but fairly standard and flat as many cheap documentaries are. 6/10

Wacky premise, mostly just uninteresting product. Extra point for the awesome 80s synth score. 5/10

Eighth Grade (2018) - Probably one of the most cringey movies I’ve ever seen, but of course done intentionally and with good purpose. Lots of laughs, but mostly good natured ones that come from a place of understanding and sympathy. Genuine. B+

C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America (2004) - A remarkably well-thought out “what if” mockumentary. Perhaps spends too much time on the intricacies of the alternate history and not enough on what makes the satire relevant, but there’s definitely still some potency. B-

Sabotage (1936) - Early Hitchcock with a rathe simple story not quite as many thrills as one would expect. Still, he makes it all work as usual, even if (as he apparently admitted) he ruined the suspense somewhat in the film’s most famous scene (the bomb on the bus). B-

25th Hour (2002) - The narrative at times feels messy and perhaps a tad melodramatic, but the story is still a powerful one, the type of which is rarely told. B

Inside Man (2006) - A finely crafted heist film that turns into something much more fascinating and nuanced. Great performances and great direction make it stick with you. B+

BlacKkKlansman (2018) - A story that was made to be filmed - a perfect blend of suspense, humor, and social relevance. Obviously some things were fabricated, and while some of those things are obvious, some seem obviously Hollywood but aren’t. An interesting balancing act that definitely isn’t perfect, but is certainly worth watching. B+

New Jack City (1991) - An interesting concoction, which seems to combine blacksploitation characters and actors with a serious crime drama plot and tone, plus a unique style that makes the film all its own. B

Dark Star (1974) - More amusing than funny, with effects that are impressive insofar as they make it obvious the film’s low budget and make you go “oh that’s kinda clever.” C

How the West Was Won (1962) - This is a film that sounds a lot better on paper than in reality. The cinematographic process used is breathtaking but often distracting, the cast is incredible but mostly underutilized, the scope of the story sounds epic but is ultimately extremely broadly sketched. This is the rare film pushing three hours that I think could have been a lot better if it was a lot longer. B

2010: The Year We Made Contact (1984) - Is there any film sequel as stylistically divergent from its predecessor as 2010 to 2001? I really doubt it. Usually, I’d appreciate a unique direction for a follow-up, but this is actually just taking something that was unique and making it incredibly generic. Were it a random sci-fi film I wouldn’t think twice. In comparison to 2001, it looks like a steaming pile of shit. C-

Presumed Innocent (1990) - A very quiet and understated crime/character drama, but with an unflinching intensity. Harrison Ford playing very much against type here, and doing it so well I wish he did it more often. B+

Family Plot (1976) - Hitchcock’s last, obviously not his best, but he didn’t go out on a sour note here. I love Hitchcock when he’s playful and humorous, even if the film isn’t even all that funny. Still, it’s a fun one. B

I like Dark Star. It’s the flip side of 2001: A Space Odyssey. For a USC student film blown up into a feature, it’s amazing. And it planted the seed that became Alien. With all the John Carpenter remakes in recent years, I’m amazed this one hasn’t been remade yet. A remake would probably never have the low budget charm or inventiveness of the original though.

Sudden Death- 90s Die Hard knockoff produced as a Jean-Claude Van Damme vehicle. Callous in its utter disregard for human life in the name of entertainment only to play on Spielberg-style sentimentality and family drama. It’s the sort of big-budget spectacle that dominated movie screens in the 80s and 90s before the CGI revolution led to the superhero wave of today. None of the suspense or characterization necessary to make a solid thriller, it’s a diverting action picture with some impressive stunts to fill up it’s big finale. Fun if you like this sort of thing (and I do), but far from a top-tier example of what it is. A little too long too.

Skyscraper- What was the pitch here? Die Hard in a building? Buoyed by the reliably charismatic presence of Johnson, it’s more disaster picture than action movie. The Hong Kong setting also calls to kind many an action classic it comes nowhere near measuring up to, but on its own terms, it’s a solidly diverting little thriller. A few sequences make good use of vertigo-inducing heights, and it’s nice to have a damsel-in-distres who’s useful and kids who aren’t too annoying. Serviceable genre fare, but not impressive enough.

Upgrade- Solid, appropriately nasty little B-movie revenge thriller that’s like Ghost in the Shell meets Death Wish. Nothing Earth-shattering, but a nifty little exploitation film with the good sense not to overstay it’s welcome, it has a lean runtime and enough cheap thrills to sustain it. Knows exactly what it is and what it’s supposed to do, and does it well.

Saw- The original torture movie that launched a dozen sequels and knockoffs is, surprisingly, not that brutal. Doesn’t play for gruesome gore, but it’s still nasty and in the end it’s just an exploitation film. That’s not terrible by any means, just limited in function, but it knows what it, and does what it does well too. A solid example of a grungy thriller that tries to get some mileage out a limited budget and high-concept premise.

I need three-disc Blu-ray cases the size of single disc ones like I get from the store when I buy new discs. Do they exist commercially and is there a place I can get them?

Fantastic little movie. The scene in the poster reminded me of my own personal battles, and it was real frustrating to watch him fall back into the trap. Not frustrating in a bad way, just my investment in the character. Also, while the movie did nothing wrong, I really hate listening to the over-dubbed version of The Sound of Silence. It ruins the song for me and I really don’t think it would’ve changed the film tonally to have the original version playing in those sequences, so it just bothers me. *shrug*

Director’s Cut. For being nearly two hours of penis jokes it was just as hilarious as anything else from Monty Python I’ve seen. I feel like that’s something most people couldn’t accomplish very well. And the opening short is something I saw as a child and hadn’t seen it for years, so seeing it again was a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.

This was really really great. Loved it. Hadn’t seen it yet for whatever reason, and I actually didn’t know much about it other than the famous “well do ya, punk” monologue. I tried watching Magnum Force afterward, but my interest was completely lost so I didn’t try to finish it. I think I’ll just leave this one alone as far as sequels go. Perfect all on it’s own.

Just wonderful. Can’t think of much else to say.

I’ve bought multi Blu-Ray cases from this company before and was satisfied with them. I think they have nearly every kind of disc case out there.

True. I’ve seen all the sequels except The Enforcer (fell asleep watching it) and The Dead Pool; none of them live up to the original.

Realizing that you’re doing something very wrong and getting out but then you catch your eye on something that turns you back around.

Yeah it honestly just felt so generic.

I’m glad you can tell the difference between the subject of the scene and the plot of the movie.
