Saying that atheism is a religion is like saying not collecting stamps is a hobby.

Lacking a belief in a god or gods doesn’t mean that someone is 100% certain about that fact. I call myself an atheist because I don’t believe in a god. I choose not to say I’m agnostic because, as others have pointed out, the word agnostic these days implies being in the middle between theism and atheism and I’m not. I have no reason to believe in any god so I don’t. I don’t believe. I have no reason to believe that aliens are monitoring the human species. I don’t believe that’s happening, but I’m not 100% certain. I don’t feel the need to preface every statement with that caveat.

Exactly.

It is ironic that a highly educated scientist is less certain about his knowledge than is an uneducated but devout religious person. That is the nature of faith, and what in my mind fundamentally distinguishes atheism, agnosticism, and science from religion.

Unclear whether that is an observation or a criticism. It also suggests one can not be both at the same time.

I’m assuming that all “highly educated scientists” aren’t also “uneducated but devout religious” people. Very few scientists are devoutly religious because faith isn’t based in rationality.

First, citation needed.

[looks up the word “rational”]
ra·tion·al
adjective
1. based on or in accordance with reason or logic.

Also your statement assumes that most scientists don’t deign to believe that which is not scientifically provable; or that one can not use logic and reason to back up one’s faith.

Actually, many scientists are religious. My statement was not intended to imply otherwise. Rather, it was intended to compare two particular groups, not to imply that they represented a tautology.

faith

strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof

That isn’t in accordance with reason or logic. I didn’t even say it was necessarily bad. I’m just stating why I think there are so few devoutly religious scientists.

and in my humble opinion you aren’t getting grief

I wish to talk about this. I have gotten grief over my stance on the anthem protests. Even since I first stated my stance, I have gotten wisecracks and side comments from multiple people. I have also been treated like my stance is stupid and silly. Some of it has hurt. When I said I had gotten grief over my stance, I wasn’t just referring to the other posts in that thread. I was referring to all the posts in all the threads made about my stance. Even though this was the first time in a long time I really opened up about my stance, people still made comments.

One of the downsides of sharing your opinion in a public forum warb is having to deal with reactions from people who disagree.

I don’t mind people disagreeing with me. It is the wisecracks and side comments and ridicule that I mind.

What? You share an opinion that other people find repugnant and you get pushback. Go figure!

So what? I don’t like seeing /sigh/ and “whatever” and “ha ha.” and all that bullshit every time you respond to me but you don’t see me playing the victim over it.

Even for the Trumpster fire, this is big.

Eh, not really. They seem to be perfectly okay with what he does, and just not like him personally. Their “whispers” don’t mean shit because they didn’t do anything.

Due to the word ‘Lodestar’ in the op-ed, the speculation is that the author is either Pence or someone who wishes to have us think it is him.

If Trump’s supporters support what he does, wouldn’t they be angered that most of the administration is attempting to thwart what he is doing?

Well yeah, but that’s not my point. Either I misread something, or you misread something, or both.

They like the typical Republican things that he’s doing, like the tax cuts and deregulation, but they hate his instability and disastrous foreign policy decisions. I think they’re setting the stage for not supporting him in 2020.

I actually find this a bit disturbing. Trump won the election, and with the help of these people. Seems like they want their cake and eat it too. Also, it’s the Trump supporters always claiming that there is some sort of Democrat-led “deep state”, when actually if this article is to be believed, there really IS a deep state and it is entirely Republican. If they were truly patriots, they would come out in the open and say what’s right, not quietly benefit from something they know is sick.

Trump just called it “gutless”. He’s right.

I kind of agree, but I also can at least appreciate that there is some resistance to this madman, and that’s what Trump is, from within.
