No it says that when I try to extract it “Checksum error in ‘Insert TLJ mkv file here’, the file is corrupt.” It also says archive corrupt in there too.

What extractor are you using? For Hal’s TFA edit the only one that worked correctly for me was 7Zip. Try using that one as it may help because I had that same problem beforehand.

Hi everyone. Haven’t been on the site in a while, so I wasn’t aware about the progress of the project. I’m excited to hopefully watch this soon! If you still would like me to make a cover, I can do it in a couple of weeks when I get back from holiday.
P.S. Hal, if you do need me to make any posters or Blu-ray covers for an edit, don’t hesitate to PM me.

Sherman! You’re not dead! Where’s my droid?

Natedug put together some terrific cover artwork, modeled after your TFA:R covers. So in a way, you already have.

Update: Extracted using 7z. It worked this time. Thanks DZ! So excited to see this!!!

on linux, the only thing that would extract this was 7z. Dunno what is up with this zip file, but at least 7zip reads it.

JEDIT: spoke too soon, 7z spent forever acting like it would extract, only to fail saying “can not open the file as archive”.

unzip extracts it, but complains, and the file doesn’t hash to the torrent on myslpeen…

Who’d have thought the built-in Mac OS zip utility would cause such problems! Recompressing all versions now, and I’ll swap them out on the Google Drive once they are ready, using the same utility I used before.

Just watched, with your commentary. Quite interesting to hear your grappling with this film. I didn’t have the same initial response that you did, and I think you ended up a a few different places than I did, but I found it very useful to hear you talk it through, while watching a movie like that in the background. 😋

For example, your description of the quick succession of subverted expectations around Luke’s death we’re not something I experienced or even could quite fathom why someone would experience, so your explanation was insightful.

It’s so awesome to be listed in the “Special Thanks”. Great work on another quality edit Hal! Here’s to Episode IX hopefully not needing one. But maybe a certain Solo movie… 😉

Where’s the new VFX shot that replaced the caretakers? This sounds so cheesy to say but I honestly can’t tell what wasn’t originally in the movie.

I think it’s when Rey looks back at the hut after she shot the wall out while “cleaning her blaster.”

When Rey looks at the hole she shot through her home, there were originally two caretakers trying to clean it up.

Thanks for the kind feedback, and I’m glad to have published my thoughts via the commentary.
It’s funny… I felt as though I was emotionally expressive during his death scene, but in listening to myself afterward I sound totally deadpan!

Is there a filter applied ? I’ve just watched randomly a few sequences and I’m not sure the look of the movie is different from the bluray, or is it that subbtle ?

Anyway, all changes made to the movie are 100% seamless, so good work to everyone involved, it will be a great pleasure to (re)watch this (very good) episode in this slight edit version

I tweaked the colors a little, for lack of being able to use DrDre’s LUT without it causing video problems. It ought to be close to his version, though not as strong of an effect in order to avoid inadvertently going too far.
Just a little less green/yellow, basically.

Ok I see, it’s more obvious on the daylight scene, the blue sky in particular. Subtle… but indeed welcome change !

Ok then, got time to sit and watch it entirely. I’ve already given my opinion on the movie (good, not perfect, still better than all the 3 others Disney flicks), so I won’t do it again. I’m just surprised by the picture quality: the video is very noisy and very dark. Snoke’s scenes and the night island scenes are very grainy with compressed artifact all over the place. Is this the compression rate or the applied filter which causes this issue ? I don’t know, but if the color grading is to blame I would be in favor of getting a “theatrical look” version of the edit if possible. Has anyone else seen the issues I’m talking about ? On a computer screen it’s not noticeable, but on a tv screen it’s kinda obvious, unfortunately 😕

(oh and I’ve spotted 5 or 6 things I need to correct to the french subtitle file, nothing radical, minor mistakes)

Those compression things you mention are, to my eye, already present in the source material. DrDre’s LUT appeared to exacerbate these issues, which is why I tweaked the colors myself. I did not adjust anything other than the colors, no contrast or anything else.
Could you look over the scenes you mention on the same TV using the theatrical BluRay? Just to confirm you see it already present there.

So, quick comparaison between TLJ:L and the bluray version: indeed the red throne room is already a little bit noisy (the red background especially), which is a little bit emphasizes in the TLJ:L version (it was already the case with TFA:R with Snoke’s very dark scenes). As for the crushed black, my bad I guess, since I’ve checked on my tv and there is nothing wrong with them (which means at some point I’ll just need to go back to my parents home to make a complete set up of their tv config, the unbalanced quality I’ve seen might be quite related to that). And since I was the only one to see these issues, the (bad) tv config is the best assumption. Thanks for your reply !

Glad to hear it! The Blu-ray does have some ugly compression. A cynical part of me wonders if it was intentionally done poorly in order to make the 4K HDR version compare better.

Hal,
Happy to see this is out! It looks great, and I’m flattered by your mention in the special thanks and your kind words in the commentary! Like snooker, I also had a dumb grin on my face!
I really like hearing your take on the film, and it’s great insight into your decision-making process.
Congrats on the great release!
