Nitpicky questions concerning ANH

Author
Time

I’m not taking these questions to be a tool. These are simply things that I’ve always wondered about and thought this might be a place to get answers without getting flamed

  1. Lifesigns or not why would the Empire choose not to shoot the Escape pod?

  2. When the droids are being sold and bought the red R2 is right next to artoo-detoo. Then he goes off and blows a gasket. Then it cuts back to artoo-detoo and unless I’m tripping they use the exact same screenshot as has a minute before that shows the red R2 next to him again???

  3. At the very start of the movie C-3PO verbally expresses that he knows the princess but when he’s in Luke’s garage he seems to either be playing dumb or lying?

  4. How does Obi-Wan not remember R2?

  5. Why would the Empire bother framing the tusken Raiders but not bother covering their tracks at the farm?

  6. Why aren’t all the other Troopers WTFing when Obi One Mind Tricks the first Trooper?

  7. Lucas felt the need to replace the Wolfman in the cantina scene but not Satan? Don’t get me wrong I like them both I just thought it odd

  8. When Tarkin is told that leia lied about the rebel base Vader responds verbally… and then there’s a weird delayed hand gesture from Vader…?

  9. When the Falcon is first approaching the Death Star how is that TIE fighter not in firing range? It looks just as in range as the rest of the Tie fighters do in the movies

  10. When han calls the two Troopers standing outside the falcon to come in and “help him” you hear laser blasts but there’s no markings on the stolen armor nor is there mention of what they did with the bodies??

  11. In the trash compactor Luke says that he already tried shooting the door but han jumped in mere seconds after Luke…??

  12. Lucas wanted to “remaster” his masterpiece but he felt it was okay to leave the Stormtrooper hitting his head on the door? Again don’t get me wrong I like it that it’s there

  13. Leia knows that they’re being tracked but still takes them straight to Yavin 4?

  14. Not a question but simply an Easter egg that I noticed for the first time: in the scene where Luke sells his landspeeder there’s a white humanoid Droid walking down the street. It’s the same Droid in RoTJ that’s scrap metal in Jabba’s Palace that C-3PO bumps into when hes separated from R2

Again I’m not trying to troll with these nitpicky questions I just figured that there’s probably some answers out there

I can’t tell if you’re kidding or not. Almost all of these are ‘because it’s a movie’. You just have to use your powers of inference.

Do people still use the word ‘flame’ on the internet these days? That’s a word I haven’t heard in a long time…

  1. Lifesigns or not why would the Empire choose not to shoot the Escape pod?

Lot of possible answers, but the semi-canon book “From a Certain Point of View” posits that anytime those officers fire at something they have to fill out paperwork, so they decided it wasn’t worth it. Oddly fits.

  1. When the droids are being sold and bought the red R2 is right next to artoo-detoo. Then he goes off and blows a gasket. Then it cuts back to artoo-detoo and unless I’m tripping they use the exact same screenshot as has a minute before that shows the red R2 next to him again???

I believe that’s a continuity error caused through editing.

  1. At the very start of the movie C-3PO verbally expresses that he knows the princess but when he’s in Luke’s garage he seems to either be playing dumb or lying?

There’s a version where he mentions the captain and not the princess at the beginning. It’s possible he was lying/playing dumb or maybe has never seen Leia before.

  1. How does Obi-Wan not remember R2?

He doesn’t say he doesn’t remember. Also, the prequels were not in mind when they made the original.

  1. Why would the Empire bother framing the tusken Raiders but not bother covering their tracks at the farm?

Lazy/didn’t know that sand people ride single file.

  1. Why aren’t all the other Troopers WTFing when Obi One Mind Tricks the first Trooper?

I assume he’s affecting them too to an extent.

  1. Lucas felt the need to replace the Wolfman in the cantina scene but not Satan? Don’t get me wrong I like them both I just thought it odd

The SE is dumb.

  1. When Tarkin is told that leia lied about the rebel base Vader responds verbally… and then there’s a weird delayed hand gesture from Vader…?

Error caused through editing.

  1. When the Falcon is first approaching the Death Star how is that TIE fighter not in firing range? It looks just as in range as the rest of the Tie fighters do in the movies

Who knows.

  1. When han calls the two Troopers standing outside the falcon to come in and “help him” you hear laser blasts but there’s no markings on the stolen armor nor is there mention of what they did with the bodies??

I’ve always assumed it was the stormtroopers firing and missing. Could be wrong. Who knows about the bodies.

  1. In the trash compactor Luke says that he already tried shooting the door but han jumped in mere seconds after Luke…??

There was enough time. Also possibly not shown in real time.

  1. Lucas wanted to “remaster” his masterpiece but he felt it was okay to leave the Stormtrooper hitting his head on the door? Again don’t get me wrong I like it that it’s there

It’s a funny moment. Not necessarily an error, even if it was an accident.

  1. Leia knows that they’re being tracked but still takes them straight to Yavin 4?

Presumably she thinks their best chance is to mount an attack ASAP no matter what.

Ah ok yeah I figured a good number of those were simply filming errors but I don’t follow the books or the comic books. I only follow the movies so I didn’t know if there were explanations for things elsewhere

Funny enough, casting tapes indicate that Leia was originally supposed to give a reason why they would head to Yavin anyway, but it was likely cut for pacing reasons.

As for the escape pod, while the line, “It must’ve short-circuited,” implies otherwise, it’s entirely possible that at least one of them might’ve thought it was a decoy, and thus wouldn’t be able to have their guns in position to fire at a pod that did contain life in time.

Isn’t that when they added a sound effect for it? They clearly embraced it for comedy.

Your question number 3 is excellent! The answer is covered in the radio play. While aboard the Tantive IV, Antilles actuates code EPSILON ACTUAL, a voice-override to 3PO and R2’s programming that programmes them to protect the princes at all costs. Lying and self-destruction are included. Princess Leia actuates EPSILON ACTUAL again when giving R2 the Death Star plans, and that’s why he becomes so focused on getting to Kenobi. It’s also why 3PO lies to Luke re knowledge of the princess.

I think this happened because the shot where we cut back to R2-D2 had a Man crawling about in a Jawa Costume and he was meant to set the un-manned R2-D2 (no Kenny Baker) rolling or something.

He was one of the crew obviously and not a Jawa. I think that is why that one happened.

He said: “I don’t seem to remember ever owning a droid”

?

Owning a droid; which is true, from a certain point of view. At no point in the PT does he ever own R2-D2. Even with the PT being kinda dumb with the selective continuity, Obi-Wan’s statement makes sense to some extent still.
