I've been downloading ESB from a.b.sw, but I was unable to grab all the parts for a couple of the RARs posted yesterday though (04,06,08,10,79,81,83,85,87,89), and I had been downloading the new headers from my news server pretty regularly - it just seemed like the parts necessary to complete those volumes never came through. Would it be too much trouble to repost a few of those (enough so the par2 files can make up the difference)? Thanks
You'd better be able to answer "yes, of course!" to the question, "You do have a commercial usenet server account, don't you?" before you start askin' for reposts...
I'm getting only three parts messed up, and that's just on my ISP's server. Haven't checked Giganews, but I suspect it's perfect.
With that many parts missing (and stuff still being posted/propagated), I suspect you are relying solely on your ISP's budget server. Either (a) give it a bit more time; or (b) take advantage of one of the many commercial servers that'll give you a trial account for several days.
Just got it off giganews, and it is indeed perfect, and will be on there for a while. I dunno how they compare to other services, but it just works every time for me and is f-a-s-t!

Unfortunately, I am using my ISP's (probably crappy) news server. I've never had a need to download dvds that way til now, so I'm not quite ready to start shelling out for a pay account. I noticed there hadn't been any more files uploaded in many hours (or at least carried by my server), and it also appeared that a few files had been uploaded twice, so I figured I'd ask. Sorry if my repost request was out of line - I'm still new to the newsgroup etiquette thing. I guess I'll have to be patient until it hits MySpleen.
No, don't write off what you've already downloaded! Just head to Giganews (as but one example), and use their short-term trial period. They'll let you d/l about a gig (or so) over three days, for free. Just be sure to cancel after those three days. This is all on the up-and-up, too. From Giganews' site:
Free 3-day Trial All new Giganews personal accounts come with 3 days of free service (up to 1GB total transfer). If you cancel by 12:01am CDT (UTC-0500) on 07/12/2005, you will be charged nothing. If you do not cancel by 12:01am CDT (UTC-0500) on 07/12/2005, the service level you select below will automatically start and you will be charged for that service.
This offer is only good once, and is not available to current Giganews account holders.
There is no way you're missing a whole gig, so this should work perfectly for you.
What newsgroup binary downloaders are everyone using? I've never tried to download something so large off usenet yet, my ISP gives me access to one of the major newsgroup services but only 10gb/month and any extra I have to pay for.
I'm using giganews, very happy so far , unlimited downloads, as fast as my connection can go, and fantastic retention. It is nice to download a DVDs worth of video in a couple of hours instead of a couple of days..
I'm using Grabit - a VERY easy to use newsgroup download tool - with a $25, 65GB 'block' worth of download with Astraweb, based on russs15 recommendation in the alt.binaries.starwars thread. I've also got a backup block account with Octanews, a bit dearer than Astraweb, but useful for filling any missing files.
The whole monthly subscription thing was what put me off using newsgroups, so discovering these one-off payment 'block accounts' that some providers offer was what swung it for me. Its a great and inexpensive way to dip your toe in the water of newgroupdom, with block starting as low as $8, and theres no 'use by' date, so the block account last until you've used all your gigabytes it up - handy if your ISP caps your monthly download limit.
I highly recommend both newsgroup providers, and Grabit, none of which I would have found if it wasn't for the alt.binaries.starwars thread. Cheers guys
I use Astraweb too, and the retention for Moth3r's posts is 100% Try using a different server if one does not work for you (europe.news.astraweb.com or news.astraweb.com or pbdl.news.astraweb.com)
And now, for your feature presentation: The Classic Re-re-re-release of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back. In this version the word "WOOKIE" has been changed to "HAIR CHALLENGED ANIMAL" and the entire cast has been digitally replaced by Ewoks.
There are a couple of minor defects in Ep. IV I've noticed - the bottom end drops out during the "holding her is dangerous..." line, and some of the Death Star battle is slightly out-of-sync. I heard no such problems on Ep. V; DG, care to expand on what you mean by "lacking"?
Things I've noticed with the video in Ep V I'm not happy with - the ghosting caused by the dirt concealment processing (present in the source, not much I can do about that) and some issues with the overall colour (or rather, lack of colour).
But I still think if you have a widescreen PAL TV this version is the best one for you. (For now...)
Which scenes in particular have the ghosting on your set? I'm trying to compile a comprehensive list and to see what I can do about it, but I haven't looked at the PAL transfers yet.
