Labyrinth (1986)

Not good. And holy hell someone apparently got Jennifer Connelly some acting lessons later in life, because she’s also not good in this.

David Bowie is good. But there wasn’t enough of him.

4/10

Now the shoe’s on the other foot. How does it feel, Frink? HOW DOES IT @#$%ING FEEL?!‽?!‽?!‽?!‽?!‽?!‽?!

To quote a guy who used to post here…

Huh?

The best thing David Bowie ever did (IMHO of course) was have Stevie Ray vaughan play on Let’s Dance which indirectly resulted in him finally getting a record deal of his own. SRV was such a huge talent and by all accounts an extremely kind and generous man, which is corroborated by his behavior during interviews. I even found an interview that was unassembled, as in it still had behind the scenes moments that were only captured coincidentally, and he was so kind to the imterviewer and the staff. By the end of it they were all laughing and joking together.

And that’s my review of Labyrinth.

I just gave it one extra point.

It would be interesting to have a thread for discussing beloved classic films only we seem to loathe and total dogs only we seem to like. If there isn’t one already?

Mad Max 2 – I was not expecting this to be so good.

Don’t expect the same of Beyond Thunderdome if you haven’t seen it yet…

Fury Road is a masterpiece, though.

The Clone Wars (2008)

My god, this is an awful movie. The humour, animation, story, everything is just bad. I guess I like the portrayals of Anakin and Obi-Wan’s characterisation though. Bad, bad movie.

I’ll never understand why they decided to just slap that first arc into theaters when the very next one was so much better and cinematic. The movie is such a horrible introduction to the series.

The Ryloth arc would have made for a decent movie. Assuming we’re trying to stick with season 1 arcs, that is.

I guess they felt the need to use Ahsoka’s introduction in the movie rather than have her just exist without much explanation.

Wow, I must be the only person around here who likes it. Was even one of my first Blu-Ray purchases. And 100% Jar Jar free! Not even Episode III can make that claim. 😉

Jar Jar Free doesn’t mean good by default - hell, one of my favorite TCW stories is the Jar Jar and Mace Windu team-up in season 6. And I say that with zero trace of irony. I thoroughly enjoy everything about that two-parter.

The movie? Well, the Ahsoka introduction part in the first 25 minutes is okay. Everything after that is atrocious. Whoever thought it was a good idea to make a story about rescuing a baby Hutt, then thought it was a better idea to make it Jabba’s son, then thought it was an even better idea to create Ziro, who might be a worse character than Jar Jar…

I don’t want to meet that person because I wouldn’t be able to restrain myself and probably wouldn’t handle prison well.

I don’t really think it’s a whole lot worse than anything else in the first couple seasons. None of them should ever had been packaged for theaters, that was the main issue.

Wasn’t Ziro George’s idea? IIRC, he suggested the Truman Capote voice. 😛

My point stands.

Dom is mostly right though, I can’t argue there.

I don’t really like anything from the Star Wars cartoons outside of Ben meeting Maul again. That should have been Episode III. Instead we got Grevious…

Picnic at Hanging Rock – I need to rewatch this tomorrow. I’m not quite sure I followed it much.

From the 35mm Kubrick festival I just returned from:

I loved most of it, though the beginning portion didn’t feel particularly special. Nothing bad, and the last bit was superb.

Haven’t seen this in a long time, so there was a lot of great humour I didn’t remember. I think it’s one of Kubrick’s best films, even down to the end credits being timed to the music. That is, out of his films I have seen so far.

I liked the second half of this a lot better this time around. I suppose it’s because I knew what was coming, but it grew on me now anyway. Certainly flawed, and not anywhere near my favorites of Kubrick’s work, but great nonetheless.

Amazing. Fantastic animation and storytelling, I just wanted more at the end.

Seconded! Haven’t been able to see a 35mm print of The Shining since 2006. The DCP suffers from the pink tennis ball curse.

They’re all haunted!

But no, there’s like a year or two wait list for certain rooms.

About 2/3 of Game Night (2018)

In-flight movie that I didn’t finish because it was a short flight, but I had some fun.
