Ranking the Star Wars films — Page 153

I love how even now, three years later, people still act like saying TFA was unoriginal and a rehash of ANH is a total bombshell that will completely upend how people look at that movie. Like the similarities weren’t obvious to every single person the first time they saw the film.

It’s probably because TAA is digging up posts from over two years ago for some reason.

I think the prequels are crud and I still wasn’t impressed by TFA. But different strokes and all that jazz.

Yeah, that.

Also, rankin’ time, though I haven’t seen Solo yet. This is in three categories. The first is movies I will definitely be watching again, the second is movies I will probably watch again, or might watch again under certain circumstances, and the third is movies I have absolutely no desire to revisit.

Star Wars
The Empire Strikes Back
Return of the Jedi
…a colossal bit of space…
The Phantom Menace

Attack of the Clones
Revenge of the Sith
The Holiday Special

The Force Awakens
The Last Jedi
Rogue One
The Battle for Endor
The Clone Wars

Army of Darkness: The Medieval Deadit | The Terminator - Color Regrade | The Wrong Trousers - Audio Preservation
SONIC RACES THROUGH THE GREEN FIELDS.
THE SUN RACES THROUGH A BLUE SKY FILLED WITH WHITE CLOUDS.
THE WAYS OF HIS HEART ARE MUCH LIKE THE SUN. SONIC RUNS AND RESTS; THE SUN RISES AND SETS.
DON’T GIVE UP ON THE SUN. DON’T MAKE THE SUN LAUGH AT YOU.

Well if you’re going to go with the Mala ranking method you probably shouldn’t even bother seeing Solo.

Dude, I would never put the Ewok movies or the Holiday special above any canon entry. You should know me better. And I rank TLJ at least as high as TPM.
However, there is something true in what you wrote: if you don’t like R1, don’t bother watching Solo which is “less good” (or “worse”, depends ont the point of view).

Yeah people don’t like tfa because it’s original, they like it because it’s fun and has good characters and is executed well, even if the ideas that it is executing aren’t very original.

I didn’t have any “fun” watching TFA, and with the exception of Rey and Poe I found most of the characters annoying as hell. Hux felt way more menacing than Kylo Ren who came off as a whiny kid who throws a tantrum at every turn. I also still don’t understand why people say it’s well executed, it sets up unnecessary mysteries (Rey’s origins), reintroduced Anakin’s lightsaber for no other reason than nostalgia, and is as insipid as anything Abrams has directed. I will only watch episode IX to see how the story ends, which will probably be ROTJ 2.0, but my interest died the moment Abrams was announced as Trevorrow’s replacement.

Thankfully Rian Johnson’s SW trilogy has something for me to look forward to in terms of the franchise.

Solo is better than RO, though the idea that if you don’t like one you won’t like the other is probably true.

even though i warmed up to tfa, i still cannot watch it without getting really pissed. the movie up until the falcon shows up is actually pretty good, and i still rewatch that half hour-ish from time to time. but oh boy… after that it’s just unwatchable to me, and it’s basically because of rey. i can’t watch the mind trick scene anymore, for example. or rey vs kylo. it just makes no sense. much like anakin destroying the donut in tpm (read: anakin in tpm) made no sense. so yeah, while tpm is still ‘enjoyable’ to me, tfa definitely isn’t, and i think it’s because qui-gon is the main character in tpm and the annoying ones are on the side. with tfa it’s the opposite. but i may still try to fanedit tfa to my liking - even though i don’t think i’ll ever be able to sit through the mind trick scene. ever.

tlj on the other hand might still get a big smile out of me (especially with darthrush’s fanedit that should be coming out in the next few months). my biggest problem with tlj nowadays is that the rey, kylo, luke and snoke plot is absolutely wonderful but feels like a completely different movie from the rest. and the rest… is not so wonderful.

all that said, both of the movies when they came out were absolute disappointments to me. tfa a lot more so than tlj. oh well 😦

i loved r1 though, and i’m looking forward to watching solo.

my current ranking:

  1. Star Wars
  2. The Empire Strikes Back
  3. Return of the Jedi
  4. Star Wars - Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
  5. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
  6. Star Wars: The Last Jedi
  7. Star Wars - Episode II: Attack of the Clones
  8. Star Wars - Episode I: The Phantom Menace
  9. Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The Prequels come out: AHHH ITS NOT LIKE OUR BELOVED STAR WARS

TFA and R1 come out: AHHHH ITS TOO MUCH LIKE OUR GREAT BELOVED STAR WARZ

TLJ comes out: AHHHH IT’S NOT LIKE OUR GREAT BELOVED PERFECT STOR WARZ

I even heard critics dismissed Empire upon release because it “had already been done before”. It seems every new movie nowadays is met by more hate than praise. Will there ever be a point when these Disney-haters are truly happy?

Oh sure, 15 years from now when there’s a new thing to dump on and no one can be bothered to remember how loud they were about these. See: the PT.

There’s been several new things in the last few years but I’m still loudly and proudly dumping on the PT.

But only because they’re terrible movies.

The Disney movies aren’t worth hating. They simply exist. But they’re decent movies. I don’t love them, but they’re fine.

The prequels are just awful, though.

I can’t comprehend how anyone could even consider rewatching the Holiday Special.

It’s the trial by fire all true fans must undergo. And some of us have seen far worse 70’s variety specials. 😉

Where were you in '77?

I rewatched The Holiday Special exactly once, and only because my OCD compels me to do so with every movie I’ve seen after I revise my rating system.

I like it. I especially like introducing it to other people. That and Song of the South.

I like telling people it exists and then making it as clear as possible that they should never attempt to watch it.

I honestly will see it just to maintain my title as a “true Star Wars fan”.

There’s no such thing as a “true [anything] fan.”

I have only seen Youtube compilations of the funniest bits and have typically thought that was good enough.

It’s not.

I won’t defend the quite boring and ideologically questionable Song of the South, but I love the animated parts with the rabbit character. I wish Disney would someday at least release that material in HD.
