Yeah the prequels in their unedited form do kinda suck but rating any of them below ewoks or the holiday special is hilarious.

You know, I always forget there are Ewok movies. For all the problems in the PT I was never able to sit through Caravan of Courage.

They were definitely aimed at kids. Unlike the spin offs today, they was never branded as a Star Wars film. I still say Battle For Endor is darker than Alien 3. 😛

Yeah I guess I was in a completist mood one day. It didn’t last.

Roughly this:
1 TESB
2 ANH
3 ROTJ
4 ROTS
5-7 TPM, AOTC and TFA (in release order)

Lunacy.

When was the last time you actually watched the PT? I watched them all over the past few weeks, including ROTS last night. We watched L8wrtr’s versions, so the worst of them is removed…and they’re still not good movies. I don’t have a problem if you didn’t like TFA, but equating them with the PT makes me wonder how well you remember the PT.

I assure you I highly dislike the PT, as both movies and part of the SW canon, but there are equally pros and cons in both the PT and TFA: I consider all of them mediocre, but each one of them for very different reasons.

Therein lies the problem. If you think TFA is mediocre, I disagree but I allow you that opinion. If you think the PT is only mediocre, I think that’s poor judgement or maybe just a failure to remember. Again, when was the last time you saw the PT?

I don’t know why people puts the force awakens up on such a high pedestal. Name me one damn thing in it that’s actually original?

Nice necro.

I’d say ANH is and always will be the definitive Star Warsiest Star Wars that ever Star Warsed, probably because it came first, leading everything else to be informed by it. However, I will say that RotS is undoubtedly my favorite.

You contradict yourself. ROTS is nothing like SW.

How is that a contradiction? I said it was my favorite, not the Star Warsiest.

Uh, well there’s Rey’s spee- oh wait, no, if you put it on its side, its just Luke’s. Wow, it amazes me how far they went to avoid having anything remotely original in that film. That said, Finn, Kylo, Poe, and Phasma are all new characters not based on any old ones, although Phasma does admittedly end up in the same category as Boba Fett, and the Prequel villains.

Having seen Solo once:

Empire Strikes Back
A New Hope
Rogue One
Revenge of the Sith
Return of the Jedi
The Last Jedi
The Force Awakens
Solo
Attack of the Clone
The Phantom Menace

Glad to see someone here can refer to the films by their full titles.

No, it’s “The Empire Strikes Back”. Weird how all the other thes were included. SOMETHING YOU WANNA TELL US MFASTX!?!?

“Attack of the Clone” is not the full title either.

Trolling aside, The Autistic Asexual has a point.

Why the hell is TFA held in such high regard? I’ve noticed many people have ranked in the upper half of their lists what is essentially a copy-paste of the first SW movie. The reasons commonly given are:

  • It made SW enjoyable again.
  • It did an excellent job setting up the ST.
  • The characters are engaging and well written.

I say Bullshit! All this movie does is recycle the Empire vs Rebels setting of the OT, rebranding them as the First Order and the Resistance. When I first saw TFA I couldn’t stop asking myself how can the FO be every bit as powerful and wealthy as the Empire when it’s made up of leftovers?
The only character I really liked was Rey even if she was way too skilled at everything for someone whose daily routine consists of scavenging ship parts. Finn was an annoying buffoon an Kylo Ren came off as a whiner rather than a menacing villain.

In case anybody here missed it TFA is currently my lowest ranked SW and has earned the distinction of being the only SW movie I didn’t like at all.

But I can actually enjoy watching The Holiday Special. AOTC and ROTS just piss me off. One was meant to be schlock, the prequels were meant to be something more.

Exactly. Also, the OT was never altered retroactively to reference/include elements from the Holiday Special/Ewok films.

The main reason why many people rank TFA high is not that they think it’s a flawless masterpiece, but simply that they don’t like the prequels at all. “It’s better than the prequels” isn’t a very high bar to jump, but it means that TFA is already in the middle of the list. And ROTJ isn’t exactly stellar, either.
Of course that’s all personal opinion and it’s fine if you like the prequels, but I hope you can at least understand that others do not.

I think the prequels are crud and I still wasn’t impressed by TFA. But different strokes and all that jazz.

Honestly I’d much rather watch a PT marathon every now and then over TFA. And as for ROTJ I consider it the pinnacle of traditional special effects.

One way I’ve come to look at the First Order that makes sense to me is that the war ended in a ceasefire, and much of the Empire’s strength retreated to a smaller area of space where they only ruled over hundreds of worlds instead of the thousands like before. Now just hyper-focused on a cold war military buildup, they were able to build Starkiller Base and a substantial fleet over the next thirty years.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I like TFA because the cast is fantastic (including Harrison’s best performance in a very long time) and it’s a fun movie despite having similarities to ANH. Sue me.

😄

(you remind me I still have to watch season 4 remix)

Yeah people don’t like tfa because it’s original, they like it because it’s fun and has good characters and is executed well, even if the ideas that it is executing aren’t very original.

Author

I love how even now, three years later, people still act like saying TFA was unoriginal and a rehash of ANH is a total bombshell that will completely upend how people look at that movie. Like the similarities weren’t obvious to every single person the first time they saw the film.

It’s a rehash without the soul that made Star Wars so special. That’s the real issue.
