i don’t think ren is a title, i think it’s just a new name he came up with.

The implication I got was that all of the Knights of Ren held that same title. But I don’t believe it’s been confirmed either way yet.

It’s only silly now in retrospect when the PT tells us Obi-wan is such a dummy that he’s basically saying “…only a master of evil, Lord”

The word “lord” is a weird case where you wouldn’t really use it in that way (more likely “my lord”). I always saw Darth as a title used more like “general” or “master” or “count,” where people refer to them by just their title all the time. I’m not a linguist so I apologize if I’m not explaining this sufficiently, though it should be easy to understand.

That makes sense. If Darth is nothing more than a designation (like Moff or General), Obi-wan is saying that he’s no more than this designation, a mere cog in the Imperial machine.

This still doesn’t explain why he says ‘A young Jedi named Darth Vader’. I don’t think there’s a way of interpreting this as anything other than his actual name.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

A young teacher named Mr. Clark…

A young lawmaker named Senator Johnson…

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Rephrasing it would have solved the problem.

“Darth Vader, a young Jedi who was a pupil of mine before he turned to evil, helped the Empire hunt down and destroy the Jedi Knights.”

Now it’s awkward in a more technically correct way. Yay English!

well, obi-wan was lying in the scene where he talks to luke, so it doesn’t really matter. in the scene where he meets vader it does sound awkward since darth is a title, but… “only a master of evil, vader” sounds terrible.

And if Darth is his title, why his he repeatedly referred to as “Lord Vader”?

i mean, even dooku calls palpatine “lord sidious” in aotc i think.

the implication i got was that the knights of ren were kylo’s knights. like, it’d be the same of there were the knights of vader. they’d be vader’s knights. something like that.

I posit that either line would have worked, and it’s just dozens of repetitions of that line which have made any other line sound wrong.

i guess. would it be possible to edit “vader” in to that scene?

Except, no matter what, we know after ESB that that’s not his actual name.

Why is Obi-wan referred to as “General Kenobi” if Master is his title?

Unless I’m forgetting something, no one ever refers to him as Lord Darth Vader.

Darth (see what I did there 😛) wasn’t yet intended as Luke’s father when SW was written/filmed. The debate is about what ‘Darth’ was ORIGINALLY intended to be. So this is irrelevant.

I don’t think that’s the debate at all.

Well replace it with … I don’t know “mister” or “count” as you say and maybe it works. But is Obi-wan being sassy then or just senile?

As for Ren… he gets no respect!

Coy just in case Luke is hearing. Don’t want to spoil that twist.
