Ranking the Star Wars Soundtracks — Page 11

As a soundtrack, TFA > TLJ.

However, to me, TLJ implemented TFA’s music in an infinitely better and more effective way.

Well that’s hard to judge after the fact for me. Things like The Scavenger and the Jedi Steps were great outside the movie, but here it’s less noticeable listening separately.

  1. TESB
  2. SW
  3. ROTJ
  4. Solo

The rest gets more difficult since it’s been years since I listened the PT and I’ve only listened once TLJ.

  1. PT (you’d need to have all the ultimate editions to compare them fairly)
  2. TFA
  3. TLJ
  4. R1

I was pretty surprised about Solo being completely out of spoilers so I didn’t even know who wrote the music until after I saw it. It’s a very nice listen with memorable themes and not just loud noises. At the same time it felt fresh and new but still fitting to the SW world.

And in the time of greatest despair, there shall come a savior, and he shall be known as the Son of the Suns.

Solo is a very fine swashbuckling score. Like Giacchino with his own SW score, I only wish Powell could have made it without any OT theme references. But his own material, somewhere between Pan and How to train your dragon, is excellent.

Some SW movies are great, others are bad, others are in the middle. But when it comes to the scores, I love all of them. Don’t know how I would rank them, but it would be something like that:

  1. Masterpiece: ANH/TESB/ROTJ
  2. Almost perfect: TPM/ROTS
  3. Very good: ATOC/TFA/TLJ/R1/Solo

If you were to ask me to hum a piece of music from one of the Star Wars movies, I’d be able to do for every one except TLJ.

  1. Hope
  2. Empire
  3. Sith
  4. Awakens
  5. Phantom
  6. Return
  7. Clones
  8. Rogue One
  9. Solo
  10. Last Jedi

Is it wrong that I’ve near forgotten the Solo soundtrack an hour after I watched? Only thing I remember was that lame piece they kept recycling whenever Han did something good and pieces of OT music from the Kessel Run. At least I remembered something.

Being able to hum a tune or not is a bad barometer for the quality of a score.

It shows how well I remember the score itself. There isn’t any original music I remember from TLJ.

That’s a you problem.

Yes, each persons ranking stems from their own opinion.

I use that ranking to see memorable the music is. If you’ve ever seen the video essay “marvel symphonic universe” they go around asking people if they can remember music from certain movies. It is a good way to see how impactful a score can be.

I believe there are far more meaningful barometers for a score’s quality.

It’s a really unfair barometer. I don’t remember the score for Alien off the top of my head but I’d never just assume that it’s bad because I don’t remember it. I could say the same about most of the movies I’ve seen, honestly.

I’m not saying TLJ is a bad score just it isn’t classic like the other 7.

Memorable and motivational are not the same thing. The music in Star Wars really gets you pumped. The music in Alien is a mixture of different atmospheres, both relaxed and disturbing. They’re supposed to be complimentary. A swashbuckling adventure and a tale of unknown dread. That bit where the A L I … appears is amazing. The fanfare as the fighters go into the trench run is amazing. But it’s a different amazing. Did Solo have either of those moments? I don’t remember any.

I also don’t remember, because I haven’t seen it yet. Could you talk about the movie elsewhere? Thanks.

Almost like those are two great moments from a couple of the best films ever made and barely any film since has reached the heights of.

Also, “motivational” is another weird barometer, so I’m not sure you’re point really works.

Here’s my off-the-cuff ranking, having not had a chance to listen to Solo’s score in isolation and expecting it to climb:

ESB
ANH
ROTS
ROTJ
TPM
AOTC
TFA
RO
TLJ

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

Well call it what you like. Emotionally resonant?
