New 4K releases - but are they any good? — Page 2

I certainly understand the mentality on this site for people to want movies to look like they originally did. Even with questionable references to “originally” aside though, for the most part I can live with a blu-ray with a slight modern regrade. Aliens looks great to me, honestly, even if I know it’s probably not accurate. DNR is of course a different issue. Always checking against the laserdisc transfers in every case seems pretty misguided, though obviously sometimes it’s helpful.

When it comes to modern films, the claim that “they added a blanket tint for the BD” is usually inaccurate, though I don’t begrudge people who want to do a regrade to their liking. Often the changes seem so slight as to make me wonder why they bothered, but power to them.

Of course we can all agree that the OT looks like absolute shit on blu-ray. No debate there.

At least we are generally out of the era of truly terrible DNR. There might be too much for some people occasionally, but I think the days of major releases looking like wax are over.

Though we aren’t in a new era where people appreciate grain. The Amazon reviews for the Starship Troopers UHD are a bit sad.

Amazon reviews are almost as bad as youtube comments. 😉

I clearly don’t remember the theatrical look (oh wait I never saw it in theaters) but when the article says “less green” shouldn’t it say “no green?” I see no green in those pictures at all. Of course you can’t trust pictures like that, it might just be my monitor’s fault. Regardless I think color issues are way overblown, people are always trying to “fix” stuff here that doesn’t need fixing, and basically meh.

There’s still green in the new Matrix images I’ve seen.

I agree with you that sometimes, especially here, color issues can be overstated. And there have been a lot of projects here that seem to want to do away with the idea of grading itself, wanting everything to look as it might in real life. But the Matrix Bluray grading was really really over the top green. From what I’ve seen, the new images look like a nice improvement.

In this case, it’s possible that my baseline is “incorrect” being that as I said I never saw the movie in theaters. So possibly for me, it’s down to personal preference, what I’m used to basically.

With that said I barely see any green in the images shown in that review.

Really? I see a lot of green, for example this shot from the UHD release:
Green

But other times the filmmakers wanted to merely imply the green through costume and set design, which is why the Oracle scene is otherwise very naturalistic.

UHD

This is fairly similar to how it was seen on 35mm.
The previous release had gone with a really heavy green tint for everything set in the world of the Matrix, and this destroyed the subtlety of the set and costume choices:

Blu-ray

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.
Episode 9 Rewrite, The Starlight Project (Released!) and ANH Technicolor Project (Released!)

Maybe I’m just a lazy viewer. Maybe I just don’t care. Maybe I just got used to more green and prefer it. All are possible.

I don’t think I’m a lazy viewer. I usually pay pretty close attention to things, but I just don’t really care about colors looking slightly different than how they supposedly looked in theaters. I don’t usually trust someone’s several-decade-old print of the film either.

When I first saw The Matrix, it was on a PS2 of a friend and something was just wrong, as it was heavily tinted green, with no other colours. But somehow, it wasn’t completely unfitting.

I first saw The Matrix on DVD at a friend’s house. We planned to stay up late and watch all three movies. I fell asleep at some point, but I don’t remember if I at least even finished the first movie or not.

To answer this one, it’s an extremely muted green, to the point where it’s hard to tell it’s actually green. It almost looks more grey to me.

I think when I watched it, the second part wasn’t even released. I feel somewhat old now. Reminds me of my latest shift at my casual job at the hardware store, where a customer approached me from behind and adressed ma with “hello young man” and when I turned around, he said “oh, not so young, after all” 😦

That customer sounds like a total asshole. I commend you for putting up with the likes of him.

Yeah, I guess he was about the same age as me, late 20s maybe. I didn’t take it too seriously, though. I try not to care too much about what other people think of me. At least if I don’t know them personally.

I can’t, so I don’t even try.

I don’t have any 4K movies.

Keep in mind it could be HDR not displaying on a computer monitor/phone.

(Correct me if I’m wrong. I don’t completely understand HDR and what displays can reproduce it.)

I’m currently working my way through the Jurassic Park 4k set. The original film looks stunning. The second one looks pretty good too. There’s a massive drop off in quality with the third one though, it looks worse than a lot of 1080p blu-rays I’ve seen. Haven’t watched Jurassic World yet, but it’s a recent enough movie that I’d assume it’s original master would yield a fine UHD disc.

The third one was basically a direct-to-video kind of movie that ended up in a theater anyway, right? No one really seems to care about it.

The third one has some good scenes, like the foggy pterodactyl cage scene.

No one cares about it because it was a mediocre movie and unlike the first two, lacked Spielberg as a director, any loose connection to a Crichton book, John Williams as composer, etc. But it was still a big Hollywood movie, with a larger budget than the first two, and decent box office success.

But yes, I was disappointed when I saw it in the theater.

I don’t even remember it. I was shocked to see it had come out in 2001 and had over 100 Rotten Tomatoes reviews for an over 50% rating. I have no recollection of it coming out, even though I knew it existed.

The new Predator movie or the new 4K release of the original?

The blu-ray.com review is very positive. I just got my Oppo 205 and need to pick up a few discs for testing. Might grab this one since it’s relatively cheap and I love the movie.
