I'm liking the prequels more and more....

With time. Do you know why? I am listening to the soundtracks of the PT. Williams is genius... as I listen more and more, it's blurring the Prequel Trilogy into just Star Wars. When I watch the films, I find myself listening more to the music than the wonky dialogue, and for example it is bringing the theme of Anakin together (Anakin's Theme as a track) better than "Yipee!" boy ever could have in TPM. Duel of the Fates IS the Jedi vs. the Sith, it's an intense track that is so epic you feel like it gives you the history of the Jedi vs. Sith war that has been happening since a Long Time Ago. When I listen to Across the Stars, I can feel the intense love between Anakin and Padme, despite one of the worst love connections or chemistry between characters in movie history (IMO). And honestly, I feel the entire ROTS soundtrack is chilling, and really made the movie hit home... there is so much emotion, of Anakin's betrayal, his "Dark Deeds" , and his burning in lava. Thank you John Williams, in my opinion you made the prequel trilogy, which some refuse to acknowledge because of its lack of Star Wars feel, Star Wars.

To all those who have said that John Williams is second to Howard Shore...

John Williams is second to nobody.

He is the film composer of our time.

Favorite 2 composers of modern day:

1. John Williams

2. Danny Elfman

With those two, there's no need for a third.

Hmmm... as a body of work I personally prefer Hans Zimmer to Danny Elfman (apart from his Boingo days!). And Howard Shore has come a long way from Saturday Night Live..

Good point. Zimmer and Shore definately have talent as composers. Elfman's work though just really seems to hit the spot for my ears.

Elfman got a lot of flak for the Spider-Man score, but I don't see why; I thought that was great.

But Williams is incomprable. No composer of our day has managed to out do him. Except maybe Koji Kondo.

You missed Yoda's theme and Boba Fett's Bespin theme

I really think Anakin's theme is underappreciated. It is a musical variation on the Imperial March.

Anakin's theme from TPM is my favorite musical piece from the prequels. OK, in order for that statement to make sense, you must ignore the whole prequels and focus ONLY in the music.

I'd give Goldsmith the 2nd under Williams. And then Bernard Herrmann. Elfman reminds me too much of Horner: They recycle--and I mean BLATANTLY recycle--a lot of their earlier scores without so much as a superficial tweak here and there. Granted, the same can be accused of Williams, but I feel he's versatile enough that he can duck that.

Morricone has always been fun, although when he's off, he's WAY off.

John Barry's Dances With Wolves soundtrack is one of the best ever.

War does not make one great.

Eh?! What about Henry Mancini?

...Jerry Goldsmith.....

For me, along with their strengths and best score in my opinion;

Jerry Goldsmith - tension and atmosphere. Alien, 1979
John Williams - drama and fanfare. Star Wars, 1977
John Barry - weight and drama. Dances With Wolves, 1990
Bernard Herrmann - mystery. Vertigo. 1958

Somehow I think we've 'composed' a different thread than the title would imply...

D'oh!!!

/me slaps forehead for forgetting about Jerry.

Revised list:

1. John Williams

2. Jerry Goldsmith

3. Danny Elfman

I've heard varying opinions about Elfman, but I just really like almost everything he's created. While it's nowhere near as complex as Williams or Goldsmith, it's still really nice on the ears for me.
