John Williams is second to nobody.
He is the film composer of our time.
Episode II: Shroud of the Dark Side
“Back when we made Star Wars, we just couldn’t make Palpatine as evil as we intended. Now, thanks to the miracles of technology, it is finally possible. Finally, I’ve created the movies that I originally imagined.” -George Lucas on the 2007 Extra Extra Special HD-DVD Edition

1. John Williams
2. Danny Elfman
With those two, there's no need for a third.

Hmmm... as a body of work I personally prefer Hans Zimmer to Danny Elfman (apart from his Boingo days!). And Howard Shore has come a long way from Saturday Night Live..

Good point. Zimmer and Shore definately have talent as composers. Elfman's work though just really seems to hit the spot for my ears.

But Williams is incomprable. No composer of our day has managed to out do him. Except maybe Koji Kondo.

Morricone has always been fun, although when he's off, he's WAY off.

Elfman reminds me too much of Horner: They recycle--and I mean BLATANTLY recycle--a lot of their earlier scores without so much as a superficial tweak here and there. Granted, the same can be accused of Williams, but I feel he's versatile enough that he can duck that.

Eh?! What about Henry Mancini?

Jerry Goldsmith - tension and atmosphere. Alien, 1979
John Williams - drama and fanfare. Star Wars, 1977
John Barry - weight and drama. Dances With Wolves, 1990
Bernard Herrmann - mystery. Vertigo. 1958

/me slaps forehead for forgetting about Jerry.
Revised list:
1. John Williams
2. Jerry Goldsmith
3. Danny Elfman
I've heard varying opinions about Elfman, but I just really like almost everything he's created. While it's nowhere near as complex as Williams or Goldsmith, it's still really nice on the ears for me.
