Cut some of the more intense L3-37 moments.
Change Han getting his last name by a recruiter.
Cut some of the humor in the droid “rebellion”

That’s about all.

Well, here’s my rough cutlist of the movie:

-Make the intro shorter and starts with Han and Qira already on the speeder and minor cuts in between.

-Cut the imperial officer giving Han his last name

-Small trims throughout to make the pacing a bit more consistent

-Cutting that very fanservicey moment of Maul showing his saber to Qira

I am wondering if I’m the only one who felt that Rio Durant (4 armed pilot frim original crew) was jarring/distracting? As a character he was fine and his dialogue didn’t bug me at all.

However, in the Star Wars universe, alien looking creatures (not too humanoid) that do speak Basic have some kind of accent, “alien” sounding voice or something that makes them sound different. Rio sounded like a normal guy. It almost felt like a voice over in some ways.

In an edit I personally would like sometimes to be tweaked so he fits better in the Star Wars universe and not marvel. Either adding some kind of voice affect or changing his voice completely.

Just a thought if I’m not alone!

I get what your saying. I do recall really liking him. Like a lot. It felt very Guardians of the Galaxy to me and I dug it.

I had no problem with his character, he did have a nice fresh fun quality. I think I would like maybe some kind of voice affect on him to sound a little more alien. Not
Sure what that would be, but just something to help him feel more Star Wars like … if that makes sense!

I’d approach this as a 4-part TV series or something, episode 1 being Han leaves his girl behind and joins the empire then meets Woody Harrelson. episode 2 would be him getting thrown into the cage with Chewie and escaping with him and joining up with Woody Harrelson and failing their first mission. Episode 3 would consist of our protagonists trying to get the supplies by teaming up with lando. Episode 4 would be the end result of the girl leaving, woody harrelson dying, and han winning the ship. I dunno, just thoughts

I thought I already posted this, but I guess I didn’t.

The Kessel Run never happened, I swear to god! The original script said Han was full of baloney, and you can tell based off of Obi-Wan’s reaction. Could we cut dialogue to fix this? Or is it too much?

lol, what the HELL is Darth Maul doing in a young Han Solo movie? I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I imagine that it is absurd as it sounds.

Not that absurd: Maul became the leader of the underworld criminal society during the events of The Clone Wars. Han is a smugler, so he’s likely to be working with the criminal society. But

MINOR SPOILERS ABOUT THE CLONE WARS

Ok then, you’ve been warned: but Sidious left him for dead on Mandalore after killing his brother (yeah…), so we just assume Maul wasn’t killed… a second time !

No, Rebels has nothing to do with that. I only blame Kennedy for not letting TCW have a real ending to settle this kind of issues. One season is missing. Rebels could have been postponed or been produced while TCW was finishing its run.

Disney, not Kennedy.

–Cut some of Han’s “good guy” personality, it’s fine for him to start out somewhat innocent but he’s been running scams off the street since he was 10. He is not a good guy.

–Cut from Correlia straight to the train. This would make it seem like Beckett and Han have been working together for quite some time, I don’t get how Beckett starts acting like he loves Han when he considered him annoying for the first half. The twist would pack a bigger punch. The war planet scenes are boring anyways.

–Rotoscope Crimson’s ship to outer space, would make it look fancier.

–Cut droid sex joke and Lando flirting with Han… very out of place

–I didn’t like Nest being a kid, but idk how to fix this. That old wise looking lady who pretended to be Nest during the battle would of worked. Or she never takes off the mask.

–Move Maul to post credit scene. Cut final Han/Nest where they tell him he is a good guy and should join the rebels.

–End the film with Han showing Lando the reward and saying, “I want in” followed by a more upbeat end credits song (I’m Han Solo?). This movie doesn’t need to follow the episodic rules, and the current ending overstays it’s welcome + the celebration music doesn’t fit this story.

And a second edit idea
Guardians of the Galaxy + Solo mashup! 70’s music everywhere! In all seriousness, this might make the otherwise dull movie fun.

Maul- A Star Wars Story

I’ve watched Solo twice… I’m the guy who thought Episode 7 was a ripoff of a New Hope (and hated it for that - but enjoyed it because… star wars). I’m also the guy who only liked about a hour of Episode 8 (but have watched a few fan edits from here that I do think are much better than the original). The last 5 minutes of Rogue One make up for anything else in the movie I didn’t like… that was everything that I loved about Star Wars as a kid.

With that in mind, Solo…

Issues? I’ll start with my obvious main issue. Han Solo being so whipped by a woman so early and so completely. (for the record I love women, I have absolutely NO problem with women in these films, and in these films in positions of great power, etc) There wasn’t that swagger that Harrison Ford had in the original trilogy. This is after all a back story. I imagine solo at his weakest acting like he did around Leia. I picture Solo being born… his mother holding him… telling him that she loves him… and in his best baby voice saying… “I know”.

I’m not sure if through some clever editing instead of being a love interest she could just be a great friend… someone who he could surely love and want in his life… but that wasn’t a key factor in why he was doing what he was doing. I know that would take editing in multiple locations… but it doesn’t seem that far of a stretch. Even if they build towards a relationship at the end that would be ok. I would just like to see Solo be more… Solo?

I don’t think that loving someone equates to whipped. My reading from those scenes was that he had a deep platonic, romantic, and sexual relationship with someone who was his partner in crime, his partner in survival, and probably the only significant and non-exploitative relationship he’d ever had. We as an audience can sympathise with his desperation at wanting to get back to her to help her. That’s relatable to me, and doesn’t include a power imbalance (which ‘whipped’ would imply).

Then, we’re taken on his journey of tragedy as he sees what’s happened to her in his absence. At first he believes that she’s been merely exploited, but by the end of the film we realise that her survival instinct has forged her into something darker, who would sacrifice this positive and healthy relationship at the altar of power. It’s significant to Han that she was willing to sacrifice trust and support and human connection with Han for this - more so than if she were just throwing away a friendship.

I think that aligns perfectly with what we know of Han at the start of the OT. He’s burned out on love, doesn’t trust even deep connections or others’ trust in him, and while attracted to Leia is callous and harsh with his attraction. He’s built a wall of cockiness and swagger to protect him from a deeper connection, and when he returns at the end of ANH he’s not just returning to the rebellion but also returning to an adoptive family of mutual trust and support. Even as he’s dropped into carbonite he struggles to reciprocate Leia’s love - that’s more powerful knowing what mutual love has cost him before.

Sorry, I meant to write “I don’t think that loving someone equates to whipped, so I don’t think your analysis really proposes a candidate for editing”, then I got carried away. You’re right, our discussion above has no place here.

This is pretty much exactly but how I see it, articulated far better than I ever could.

After rewatching the film, the phrase that kept coming to mind is the one that Lawrence Kasdan always told JJ during the making of TFA “It needs to be delightful. Not too much talk…” With that in mind, here are my ideas for cutting:

  • Trim dialogue all over the place. There were instances when the dialogue reminded me of the prequels as in overexplaining both plot and character. This also goes for jokes that go on for too long. Less is more.

  • Trim Corellia’s chase. I’m particularly thinking of the middle section in which Kira asks if they’re faster and Han accelerates.

  • Remove Han telling Qi’ra and the guard that he plans to come back to Corellia. Let that be a reveal later on.

  • Remove first Han and Chewie bonding scene when they’re looking out the balcony of the ship. This scene is way too aware of the future. Let the bond develop more naturally across the movie.

  • Reshuffle scenes so you have the fireplace scene next. This way you establish the crew, their personalities and their stakes. This is when Han reveals that he’s planning to go back to Corellia for Qi’ra. We learn something new about the character!

  • Cut Val and Beckett’s kiss so it’s less jarring when he doesn’t mourn her later.

  • Next scene is Val with binoculars explaining the heist just before it takes place.

  • Cut the whole impounded ship thing with Lando. Have them go out on the adventure already.

  • Cut Qi’ra and L3’s conversation about the boys. Just have them arrive at Kessel sooner.

  • Let the Darth Maul cameo happen after the resolution with Beckett, instead of before.

  • Cut the overtness of Enfys talking about Rebellion and about Han maybe joining someday. Again, it’s too aware of the future.

All this with trims all over the place and I think the movie could be vastly improved.
