(first impressions)

I just saw solo, I’ts a mix of cowboy bebop, 21 jump street, American Graffiti
and blade runner, Also if i hear one more chick with a British accent one more time! and that fuckin cam-

And i have many problems with it

Anyway It was a fun Heist movie and a very boring one.

I give it Three and a half Rick McCallum’s out of five

I just came home from the cinema and… well, it was not as bad as I expected. Not amazing but fine. I definitely still think that this movie didn’t need to be made but I don’t really mind since it doesn’t ruin the OT Han for me. I’m one of those people who whine about even the smallest things that just don’t click with me… but I’m still always going to be first in line to see a new Star Wars movie.

I’m just going to ramble some random things that come to my mind while writing this.

At first, I liked the DTA (Don’t Trust Anyone) ideology of Beckett but I think they took it a bit too far in the movie with the “I’m not on your side after all… even though I really am!”

I read a few articles about L3’s (unnecessary?) droid rights advocatism in advance so I was already slightly irritated by her right from the get-go. I was quite relieved to see her go so quickly. She’ll be definitely added to my “list” right next to the Rathtars, Bor Gullet, Porgs and Fathiers. The Space Octopus in the Maw also made me feel a bit funny.

Alden did a good job portraying Han and I didn’t have any trouble “believing him” right from the beginning. There were some moments where I thought “I wonder how Harrison would’ve done that?” but other than that… he was great. I also noticed some pointy fingers in some scenes which was awesome, haha!

Donald Glover was Lando… nothing else to add. Such swagger!

Enys Nest could’ve been some super cool looking (Boba Fett-ish) villain to remember but instead it was some cute teenage girl with dreams of rebellion. That was quite disappointing for me because I was expecting some kind of a Western showdown at that point or at least something more exciting than Dryden Vos.

The Qi’ra twist with the Skype call was probably one of the only scenes where I really felt goosebumps on my arm. I guess I just need those hooded people with lightsabers in my SW movies to get a thrill overload.

Did I understand correctly that Qi’ra was Darth Maul’s apprentice who was undercover in the Crimson Dawn? How is he still alive by the way? My first thought was “Wow! They retconned Darth Maul?!” but then I remembered that I probably need to watch the Clone Wars and/or Rebels to understand it fully.

Also quick shoutout for the mention of Teräs Käsi, which most of you know, is the hand-to-hand combat form and it’s Finnish for Steel Hand. I had already forgotten that it existed in the SW universe.

I’m going to edit this post later when more things come to mind…

So much fucking fun. I’m not sure the actual mechanics of the heist made sense, but the movie had so much charm I absolutely don’t care.

The one thing I will complain about though is the inclusion of Maul. Bringing him back on The Clone Wars was one of the dumbest things to ever happen in Star Wars, even if it did lead to some interesting stuff. When they finally killed him for real on Rebels, I breathed a sigh of relief that I would never have to explain to anyone who only watches the movies that the guy actuallY survived being cut in half and falling into a bottomless pit. But now, here we are.

Sadly, I’m worried this film is going to do poorly at the box office but it is hands down the best Disney Star Wars film so far (no offense to the other offerings). This film sets the stage for sequels that I actually am interested in seeing. The Maul cameo has me extremely intrigued where that thread is going.

I thought the only really weak performance was by Clarke. After thinking they had no shot at believably replacing Ford, they managed to make it believable. Chewie was great. Glover was charming as Lando. I thought his passion for his Droid was really well done as well.

The plot was exactly what you’d expect from a Han Solo film, chaotic, borderline seeming completely off the rails only to nicely make sense at the end. Ron Howard did a fantastic of putting this film together in no time and Kasdan wrote the characters in a way that doesn’t damage established performances.

Can’t wait for a sequel. Hoping for maybe a trilogy where Han works for Jabba in the next film, dumps the shipment with a heavier Imperial presence in that one only to have the final film be about Boba Fett chasing him at the request of Jabba. Or not. I don’t care. I want more of this story, especially if Howard and Kasdan are at the helm!

8/10. May be best SW film since RotJ. Has something for every kind of Star Wars fans.

I have to say it was a very different and small star wars movie. Which is great!

I thought it was good, I really liked everything, I was very confused on the cameo, you know which one I’m talking about. I don’t get why people are upset with this movie, it’s a fun entertaining film, who cares if it’s not Harrison Ford, get over it, enjoy it for what it is. I think people are upset because of The Last Jedi, I get it, I didn’t like that movie that much, but this, this was different. I think Ron Howard did a remarkable job. There is no such thing as a perfect movie, because not everybody likes the same things. This is Star Wars people, just take your kids and sit back and go to that galaxy far, far away. I want to see it again already. I give it an 8 out of 10.

Do I want to see a sequel, I can’t speak for everyone else, but I do. If you don’t, get over it, we all have opinions.

Go see the film for yourself instead of looking at the score on RT.

My ranking:
The Empire Strikes Back
Return of the Jedi
A New Hope
Solo
Rogue One
The Force Awakens
Revenge of the Sith
The Last Jedi
The Phantom Menace
Attack of the Clones

I enjoyed it. Still better than the Prequels.

It seems like people are really embracing the new characters. In fact, the big question people ask me now about Star Wars is, “Are Finn and Poe gay lovers?” And really how the f*ck would I know? My second husband left me for a man, so my gaydar isn’t exactly what you’d call Death Star level quality. ----Carrie Fisher

I enjoyed it, wasn’t sure what I would think going in. In fact my ticket purchase was a last minute thing today after work.

Mostly empty theater at a 10pm showing, so it was a quiet movie.

There was only one scene that got a chuckle out of me, and I now forget which it was.

I dunno, probably a 6/10 for me, but maybe it will grow on me?

yeah, he looked like a video game, from Battlefront II or something, not like the Emperor or Vader when they were in a hologram.

All the monitors were very analogy/ cathode Ray too. The ones in the spaceport, the mining colony, etc. Seemed like an strange design choice to me.

Just got home from watching Solo. It was really fun. Probably my favourite of the Disney-backed Star Wars movies so far (and I’ve enjoyed them all to varying degrees). Will definitely see it again while it’s in theaters.

So I’ve seen Solo. Really enjoyed it.

Pros:

  • Alden is great. Probably the single best thing about the film. I love his performance and the way he was written - he’s not the Han Solo we know yet, not at the beginning of the film, and not at the end either.
  • To that end, they did an “origin story” without most of the trappings of that (we didn’t have to suffer a child Han or seeing his parents die or whatever, and we didn’t end things off exactly where we pick up in ANH).
  • Lando and L3. A fantastic pairing of two fantastically realized characters.
  • Chewie. Of course.
  • Woody Harrelson. Fit right in as a mentor figure without belaboring that fact. I love Woody, and if he was going to be in a SW film, this was the exact right spot.
  • It’s technically superb. Bradford Young gives it that great nitty gritty 60s/70s crime drama look, while the production design shows you the Star Wars version of that. VFX is spot on.
  • Really like the Johns’ work here. Excited to listen to the soundtrack.
  • Some of the action scenes are really quite cool. Everything involving the Kessel Run is some of the funnest stuff SW has done.
  • I really appreciated that the stakes were low. It’s a fun spin-off in the SW universe. Not everything has to be fate of the galaxy type stuff. This is actually something that bothers me about Rogue One… if you’re going to make a smaller scale spin-off disconnected from the saga, don’t basically make a saga sized film in all but name and characters.
  • And a lot of other bits that I won’t list, for everyone’s sake (this post is already long).

Cons:

  • The Darth Maul scene is probably the worst that the new Disney films has ever done. The second I heard his voice I rolled my eyes… little did I know they were going to reveal it in the worst possible way (with a way too long, irrelevant, and distracting scene that killed the climax completely).
  • On the whole I didn’t mind a lot of the winks, but some were unnecessary and grating. I don’t mind that “Solo” isn’t his name, but did you really have to do it that way?
  • Some aspects of the story are a bit of a mess. They definitely could have used some tightening and focusing in regards to the whole Crimson Dawn/Enfys Nest stuff. The conflict ultimately doesn’t have the weight it should.
  • In general not as funny as it should have been. As in, not enough jokes, and some of the jokes that are there don’t land completely.
  • Thandie Newton killed off too soon.
  • Not enough Lando and L3, though I’ll qualify this by saying this is probably a good thing (it left me wanting more), I’m glad they weren’t overused and only integrated where the story called for them.

Will probably see again soon. Would certainly be interested in a sequel if they do that.

To be fair, they do do the Last Crusade thing where you slowly see a lot of the pieces come together (oh and that’s how he got his blaster). If that kind of stuff makes you annoyed on principle, I got bad news. But, for the most part, they’re just small, subtle things that the movie doesn’t make a big deal of.

I didn’t mention, but for all my previous worrying about Emilia Clarke, she’s fine. Not bad, not great, just fine. Not crazy about the character or the performance, but it’s not too detrimental.
