Another one I’ve tried in the past is xsusenet. I forget the limitations, but it should work.

True. And I’m sure someone will do a multi-RAR upload to MEGA or similar eventually.

Working on exactly that. Maybe 2/3 done.
1080p is done, 2160 is ~half done. Will likely be ready when I wake up next.

My dilemma right now is do I go to the trouble of downloading this now, or do I hold off until the DNR version hits, since I know that’s going to be the one I keep watching into the future. Decisions.

Why not both?

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

Storage, time, doubt about when I’ll actually be able to sit down and watch it. I’m sure I won’t get to it this weekend in any event, so I won’t download anything just yet.

Oh, it’s beautiful!

The grain is definitely excessive though, so I’ll be interested to see the DNR’ed version. I hope the grain can be toned down without removing detail or introducing a “waxy” look.

The color grading still needs some work IMO, but this is still incredibly impressive.

It’s a grainy film.

And I’m not saying that the team did a perfect job because I’m sure they didn’t, but the majority of the color issues are inherent in the print.

If you want a SE of this I think you know where you can buy one

It’s a whole reel grade, which is a good method to not introduce bias as to how you think it should look. I don’t think it could look too much better than it already does with that approach (and it looks great).

There will surely be a few shot by shot regarded to choose from eventually.

It’s pretty much just white balanced to the sprocket holes with a contrast adjustment, though some of the reels are balanced by hand IIRC.

There will be versions with “proper” color grades (Dr. Dre is working on one), but this is pretty much the colors exactly as they are on the print with any fading/color shifts cancelled out.

Actually, part of the hold up with the release was trying to do a “proper” color grade and no one agreeing on it!

I’m sticking with the ungrained for 4K and waiting on the DNR version for the 1080p, personally. And I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for the eventual various color graded versions that people will make from this as a source.

the first few reels and the last few reels are very beautiful, the worst parts are in the middle, as they should be. (wow them to start, and wow them at the end to leave a wonderful lasting impression).

I simply find it amazing that this was done by fans. FANS. not a studio. let that sink in.

Wooooo… so fun to follow this project for so long and see it finally released! It’s been a fun journey.

The preview releases just got better and better and the final 1.0 is such a testament to wanting to get it right.

Google is your friend.

It really wasn’t, I thought it was some other private tracker like Myspleen but then there were different providers and fees and I found more questions than answers

You can use a free provider like free-usenet.com, the only catch is the download rate is limited to 1Mbps so it will take a while to download.

I got as far as making an account installing BinBar, but now it wants a host and a port. I’m hopelessly clueless about this sorta thing.

Oversimplified version of usenet.
Usenet/Newsgroups are a way people share messages and files, it predates the world-wide-web, and was how us old farts used to chat back in the day.

Now its mostly used for sharing humongous files.

Basically, there are providers out there that have big servers that hold the files, and they hold them for a period of time. Cheap/free providers might keep the files for a few days, paid providers for up to 3 years or more.

The advantage over torrents, it is not peer-to-peer, i.e. you aren’t dependant on anyone else to keep sharing the file, and you also (with a good provider) can download at the full speed of your connection, I get 40Mbs downloads typically, so a 45GB blu-ray file takes about 2.5 hours to download.

To download a file from Usenet, you need a usenet client (like you need a bittorrent client to download a torrent) some popular ones are SnelNL, Grabit, Sabnzb, NewsbinPro, Newsleecher etc. SnelNL & Sabnzb work well on OSX.
You install the software, configure the server settings to match the settings that your Usenet provider supplies you, and set where you want your downloads to go etc.

Then you use a usenet search engine to find the files you want to download. If you have ever downloaded a torrent, you know that typically you download a small .torrent file and open that with your bittorrent client which then goes and downloads all the files. With usenet it is similar, you download a .nzb file, which you load into your Usenet client software, and it then goes and downloads all the files.

That’s about it really. There is a very out-dated, but still good guide here (https://www.lifehacker.com.au/2010/08/how-to-get-started-with-usenet-in-three-simple-steps/) to help you understand the process.

Usenet is much faster, more reliable and you don’t get stuck waiting for peers or have downloads stuck at 95% 😃

Hope that helps, if you have any other questions, I’d open a thread in the technical sections, or drop me a PM.

Now back to our regular scheduled programming.

I want! I want!

How does it look compared to the most recent Harmy?

Now I just have to figure out how to get it!

It’s not easy to compare them directly. The color is pretty different at times. But it’s graded in a per-reel way instead of per-shot, so there is much less user-introduced bias for shots and scenes in 4K77.

The video quality is very high compared to the SSE. Lower than the blu-ray, but more consistent than Despecialized, and in a small number of shots, higher quality. There is a lot of grain, and you’ll see the natural excess of grain on effect/composited shots in 4K77.

There are still stray scratches, dirt, etc, here and there. But it’s minimal, and the cleanup is pretty great. Still, some people can’t stand seeing even a small amount of that.

If you want a copy that approaches official Blu-Ray release “standards” (like Harmy attempts to match), you’ll want to hold off until a DNR and shot-by-shot color correction is completed, which might be a bit. There will be many offshoot releases of this - what’s out now is pretty much the “base” that others will build off of.

Which isn’t to take away from the amazing achievement of the project or the final product - it’s amazing, looks wonderful, and perfectly captures what watching a very clean 35mm Technicolor print from 1977 would be like.

Is this getting posted anywhere other than the spleen? I’m trying to get the torrents for the 1080 & 2160p & am pulling nothing. Both have over 80+ seeds plus double digit peers but I’m not pulling down any bytes! Ha

I download/seed other torrents just fine.

I’d argue that there’s more detail overall in 4K77 than in the Blu-ray. The Blu-ray has been degrained, sharpened, and regrained so that the resulting image is very ‘flat’, meaning that fine details in already in-focus areas are distorted, whereas out-of-focus elements are sharpened. So whereas the impression upon seeing the Blu-ray is that it is sharper, you’re losing the natural depth of field from the original photography. 4K77 retains this.

The most noticeable issue with 4K77 is the inconsistent color grade, but that’s just how it looked on a Technicolor print.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I’m sending the 2160p on the Spleen, for what it’s worth.
