What a heartwarming story.
http://fox59.com/2018/05/16/come-and-take-it-photo-showing-kent-state-student-carrying-rifle-goes-viral/

JEDIT: Here’s some context, including a fun fact!

https://www.refinery29.com/2018/05/199241/kent-state-girl-with-gun-viral-photo

The woman in question is Kaitlin Bennett, a recent graduate who decided to pose with the weapon to promote her second amendment rights. She’s also the founder of Kent State’s chapter of a right-wing media outlet called Liberty Hangout, which is prone to posting racist and inflammatory memes on Facebook.

If the NK talks fall through, we will certainly see the republicans saying that it is a GOOD thing, then giving Trump credit for it, and then nominating him for the Nobel Peace Prize for rebuking a dictator.

The Senate approved a resolution Wednesday that aims to undo a sweeping act of deregulation undertaken last year by the Federal Communications Commission, issuing a rebuke to the Trump administration, which supported the FCC’s move.

The resolution targets the FCC’s vote in December to repeal its net neutrality rules for Internet providers. If successful, the legislative gambit could restore the agency’s regulations and hand a victory to tech companies, activists and consumer advocacy groups.

The congressional effort comes less than a month before the rules are officially expected to expire, on June 11. And the high-profile vote could shine a spotlight on lawmakers running for reelection during a tough midterm season.

This story kinda naturally leaps to conspiracies and coverups, but I’ll humbly submit that there must be a mechanism where law enforcement (likely Mueller, but could “just” be FBI financial crimes unit) can remove/hide extraordinarily sensitive data. Things that could reveal details of an ongoing investigation, expose informants, damage international relations, or all three.

Because no matter how much blatantly illegal activity has already happened with impunity at this point, I really strongly doubt all traces of these financial records have been wiped from all backups and transaction logs. Banks have a thing about data integrity. So if someone did try to cover this up, that was the most boneheaded move to date, and that’s really saying something after what we’ve seen this last year.

Nevertheless, regardless of how you choose to interpret the story, there doesn’t appear to be a way to interpret it in a way that doesn’t indicate something very unusual and illegal happened that someone (either the criminals or law enforcement) felt justified the unprecedented removal of data from the FinCEN database.

Executive action to deny funding to entities that discuss/provide abortion. As noted in article, Supreme Court previously upheld this kind of rule. But the Supreme Court has gotten more aggressive on First Amendment since then. Current case to watch is lawsuit against California for law requiring pregnancy centers to provide abortion information.

To be fair, Trump supposedly doesn’t know the difference between HIV and HPV.

I hope all the politicians that do nothing about this school shooting other than pray about it get voted out of office in midterms this year. The lack of gun control is the only reason that these school shootings happen so often in America. Anyone who claims otherwise, including the terrorist Oliver North that will soon lead the NRA, is lying.

Or society is sick. Machine guns were readily available many years ago — actual machine guns, not black plastic rifles that look like something out of a movie, but are functionally the same as a hunting rifle. Where were all the mass shootings back then?

Banning scary-looking rifles won’t solve the problem. I went shooting with family and friends a few weeks back for my dad’s birthday. I can tell you that someone packing a couple semi-automatic handguns and a few magazines can do a tremendous amount of damage in a short period of time.

Background checks and mental health checks would probably help. There’s something going on out there that goes beyond availability of firearms.

There were more people incarcerated in mental institutions decades ago, which is why I think there were less shootings then. Also, who said anything about rifles? I don’t even know if this shooter used rifles. I want almost all guns to be nearly inaccessible. And there are sick people in all 1st world countries, but this stuff only happens this regularly in the United States.

If I can buy a hunting rifle that’s functionally the same as the scary rifle, it’s a useless gesture.

Do we need a useless gesture that panders to angry voters and doesn’t solve the problem?

We still put many people with mental issues in jail. In fact, I’d guess we put more mentally ill people in jail today than we did back then. It’s easier to throw them away in prison than to tackle something as complex as mental illness.

Also, who said anything about rifles? I don’t even know if this shooter used rifles. I want almost all guns to be nearly inaccessible.

Never happen.

Well said.

For the record, what I’ve seen is that it was a shotgun and a .38 revolver.

I didn’t say prison. I’m talking about mental institutions. I don’t believe in putting mentally ill people in the same facilities as sane criminals. I’m a staunch advocate of reforming our justice system.

Agreed. My point is that we still don’t deal with mental illness appropriately. Mental institutions from 40 or 50 years ago were nightmares and today’s prisons aren’t much better in terms of mental healthcare.

Also, who said anything about rifles? I don’t even know if this shooter used rifles. I want almost all guns to be nearly inaccessible.

And then what? Ask Londoners if they feel safe with people getting stabbed every night while the police confiscate garden tools, get cuffed by their own suspects, and the mayor talks about banning fast food ads.

Guns, trucks, knives…sick, determined people will use whatever they have at their disposal. You can’t ban every potential weapon and you can’t legislate malice. Something is wrong, and it’s not guns, which have been readily available in the US forever.

I live in a relatively secure apartment building at the moment and don’t own a gun currently, but if I hadn’t moved out of my downtown condo, I’d have a gun by now. With my front door at street level, I had random drunks pound on my door late at night and try to force their way in because they had the wrong house, as well as someone who kicked in one of my first floor windows in an attempt to break in. And as a kid, someone broke into our house when only my sister and I were home; he thought my sister was there alone, so he bolted as soon as he heard me coming (with my trusty pitching wedge, no less), but he could’ve easily overpowered both of us. This shit happens and I’m not going to be left with only a golf club to clumsily defend myself in an enclosed space.

I’m buying a gun and getting training as soon as I’m back in a private residence.

Broadly speaking the answer would be yes. London is one of the most populous cities in the world. One murder is statistically tiny and no danger to the majority but one is still far too many. The UK politicians, police etc are all working together to reduce it again by further restricting access to knives. That’s how you tackle a problem caused by dangerous weapons. Action, not inaction and prayer.

The current hullabaloo about London knife crime is because people desperate to disprove that guns=bad in America have latched on to the statistical blip that London had very slightly more murders in Jan+Feb than New York (once considered a “murder capital” of the world) for the first time ever. That’s conveniently ignoring that New York had roughly 3 times the murder rate of London in both of the last two years.

But what’s being done to address why people want to stab other people to death? I doubt that access to knives is the reason people stab one another.

Except it’s 36 fatal stabbings so far this year in London.

But at least they didn’t use a spoon.
