I noticed the show AMC Visionaries: James Cameron’s Story of Science Fiction in it’s second episode, when showing clips from Star Wars doesn’t seem to use footage from the most recent version of Star Wars. I’m wondering if anyone here has been able to deduce what the video scource was. Was it the GOUT?

I’ll try to remember to skim it when I get home and see what I can see.

Holy shit. It’s a mix of the SE and Despecialized.

There’s frame damage on this TIE fighter that matches the source DE used, possibly just DE. The middle is 2.7, can anyone grab the frame from 2.5 for color matching? Top is the GOUT.

You can see tiny spots and details in the documental pic that are present in the DE shot too but doesn’t appear in the GOUT shot.

As the person that further cleaned/degrained/color corrected that shot for 2.7, I certainly do need to point out that it’s originally derived from TN1’s Silver Screen Edition.

Edit: Wait, the bottom one is from the documentary? It looks cleaner and less compressed.

There were later, higher bitrate releases of the SSE after I did 2.7. It could be from that. Or those specs of dust could be in the negative, and it’s another film source? In any case, it doesn’t look like it’s from 2.7 directly if I’m looking at this right.

It couldn’t be from another film source unless that damage was on the negative, right? I don’t have Silver Screen to compare with.

Right. With a shot like this, it’s certainly not impossible that the damage is in the negative, though.

So I was streaming it on my browser, happened to pause at a frame that showed film damage, and quickly grabbed a screenshot. We can’t really compare compression as I’m not sure what resolution my frame was running in, what the stream compressed vs the live broadcast, etc.

Isn’t the GOUT supposedly DVNR’ed to hell?

I think it’s crazy that AMC wanted to use some (why only some?) shots from the original version, and had to do like the rest of us and go to the internet. With George Lucas standing (virutally) right there!

So is this the second time a public person/program has used DE or another fan release to show a pre-SE version of a scene (the first time being Conan)?
