It does indeed, I had forgotten. The latest version of Premiere CC has a machine learning tool that can colormatch two similar shots, but it’s nowhere near as good as Dre’s. It could however get you closer to the right color, and from there you might be able to tweak it.

I think Dre was working on a similar machine learning algorithm that didn’t require exact frames, but I don’t think he’s released it for general use. Not sure if it’s in a usable enough state to try on this scene, but you might be able to ask him and see if he’ll give it a go.

Does anyone know how or know where one can find the music only version of the Last Jedi soundtrack? I can’t for the life of me figure out how to use it in my edit.

And since it’s streaming, the sound would be lossy. So none of this is really ideal. Thanks, Disney.

I wouldn’t think this would really matter if you are just using it to smooth over some cut points.

It wouldn’t matter so much for that use, but I was actually hoping to make a score-only version of my fanedit. Not a huge deal, just a bit of a bummer.

I just wanted to throw this out there to see what people think.

The “cave” scene was weird. I didn’t understand why there were a million Rey’s all lined up. I’m probably missing something. So I edited that out (albeit, quite poorly) and made a version where she simply walks up to the mirror and asks it her question.

Thoughts?

This edit does work (although a shot of her multiples remains) but I just saw that scene as an(other) echo of Empire. Luke saw his greatest fear - the potential evil in himself. Rey also sees herself but this time, nothing more than that. Or something.

The cave scene was one of the few genuine “unique” moments of the movie. Dark side caves should be weird.

My personal interpretation:
It’s a representation of two things,

  1. How alone Rey is and how she feels, just stuck by herself.
  2. How the Force can appear deterministic because it allows you to see the past and the future. Her copies make a decision behind the “real” her and then she is forced to act it out because it’s something she chose behind, then each copy in front of her has to do the same thing (snapping, waving her hand.) The future is always in motion but actions always have consequences. She moves up in sequence, trying to see the future/past to figure out who’s there, but she’s left with emptiness and just herself. The dark side can’t really help you in the end and it makes you self-centered.

An edit could be made in the flashback sequences tongive kylo the skywalker lightsaber. It would explain a few things including why ren says that lightsaber belonged to me, how maz kanata has it and why luke throws it over his shoulder.

He does have the Anakin Skywalker lightsaber.

You probably don’t recognize me because of the red arm.

I’m pretty sure Ben does not have the original saber in the flashback scenes.

But I don’t think adding it would answer any questions. It doesn’t really explain how the saber was recovered. And Ben already has a legitimate claim to it being the grandson of Anakin Skywalker, which is what I took from the line “it belongs to me.”

Crosspost from the other thread:
I’ve been working on a fairly major cut of TLJ, either to stand alone as a shorter movie or as an extra part of a really long TFA. (I love TFA as it is, or with the Hal 9000 restructure.) I don’t have the expertise to get the audio and music transitions and everything to go smoothly, and it’s choppy in places, but it reflects what I want.

Basically I have two main issues with TLJ. They’re not very original and many people have had the same issues.

  1. The characters of Rose and Holdo and their subplots.
  2. Disrespect and revision of existing original trilogy characters: Luke, Han, Leia, Yoda, and the Jedi.

I cut almost every scene with Rose and every scene with Holdo, which means Finn is also conspicuously absent, but it can’t be helped. No Poe subplot either, no Canto Bight, no DJ. Rose is now just a member of the Resistance who participates in the final battle, her “meet cute” with Finn is when they both crash during the battle (no kiss or dialogue) and Rey looks on approvingly at Finn giving her the blanket on the Falcon.

Leia isn’t ever wounded; Kylo Ren’s choice not to kill her actually matters. Her maternal love for him and her connection with the Force are manifest in that way, instead of a goofy space flight.

The First Order figures out how to shoot at the obvious transport ships on their own. The hyperspace ram is pulled off by Luke, repurposing the scene of him straining to contact the unconscious Leia (and Yoda’s lightning bolt. Yoda is not in the movie.) We only see the chair from the back and can figure out later that it was his projection in the chair. This gives Luke’s role more punch and justifies the map subplot a lot more in TFA. I prefer Luke not dying at the end (since it means Kylo Ren “killed” him anyway,) but he can.

Luke and Rey’s interactions are carefully arranged so that Luke is still grumpy, but he wants to teach her. He mourns Han in the Falcon as soon as he finds out. Luke doesn’t hate the Jedi or criticize them. The audience can infer (since Han already told us in TFA, and there are scenes where Luke says this in TLJ) that he felt guilty and like he failed as a teacher. He doesn’t want to take on new students because he doesn’t feel like he can be trusted with them, and he’s worried about them turning to the dark side - he almost gives up training Rey when she starts looking into the dark side cave. Luke’s interpretation of his confrontation with Ben is the correct one and an alternate is never presented. Rey’s anger at Luke is just about him not thinking Ben can be saved, and trying to leave, not that she thinks he’s a murderer.

PM me if you want to see the rough cut.

Not really a major idea but just a slight scene restructure that I have been thinking about, but curious as to how much of an impact it would have.

This idea relates to the scenes during Luke and Kylo Ren’s confrontation, to possibly improve tension/pacing.

Currently:
Kylo’s ship lands-
Poe brings up his binoculars (POV), cuts to-
Kylo and Luke’s first lines together, they ignite their lightsabers, cuts back to-
Poe and Finn where they decide to go find another way out, cuts to-
Rey flying around scanning for life forms-
Poe finding their way out is blocked-
Rey finding the blocked exit, “lifting rocks…”-
Back to Luke and Kylo’s fight.

I’m basically wondering if this could be restructured slightly. I’m thinking that maybe one could combine Poe first looking through the binoculars with him deciding to find another way out, and then moving Luke/Kylo’s first dialogue interaction to later, possibly after the quick scene of Rey and R2 scanning for life forms. We then would cut to Luke/Kylo’s first interaction, sabers ignite, then hard cut to Leia and the beacon on her wrist, and them finding the blocked exit.

Putting those two Poe scenes together might require some kind of buffer shot, maybe of someone looking at Poe while he looks through the binoculars.

The reason I have been thinking about this is because there is a lot of time in-between Luke and Kylo igniting their sabers and cutting back to the duel. It might not noticeably take away from the tension as it currently is, but maybe the tension would be increased by reordering these scenes this way.

This also leads me to think about the moment Rey sees the blocked exit. Even though “Lifting rocks…” is a funny line because of how Luke said earlier the Force is more than just about lifting rocks, and now, she has to do exactly that to save the Resistance. But, I wonder if it cuts out some tension in that moment because it tells the audience exactly what Rey is going to do. Would it not be more tense if we have just heard how Luke is sacrificing himself to buy the Resistance time, only to find out their only means of escape is blocked, and then to surprise the audience by showing Rey has lifted the rocks using the Force? I’m not saying it is bad as it is now, but just something in my head is telling me that this could help increase the tension in that moment.

Bonus thought: I would also suggest cutting the line of Rey telling Chewie to draw off the fighters from the battle. By cutting it, it might allow the audience to assume this tactic was Chewie’s idea, giving him a little more agency in this film where he doesn’t really do much at all. I also like to think Chewie has a lot more experience to draw from to come to this decision rather than Rey.

I know these aren’t major changes but these might be slight trims/reordering ideas that might help polish the final act of the movie.

Is anyone planning to or already attempting to finish the vfx in the “That’s weird that you recorded that” scene with Finn and BB-8 (unfinished background) and the scene when Finn, Rose, DJ and BB-8 are walking through the Supremacy (finish ceiling, remove gray suited BB-9E puppeteer, remove motor unit)?

I did a first pass of some of the ‘recorded that’ scene recently. I mostly just hid the cable from BB-8 through cropping though.

Has anyone taken a stab at changing Luke’s saber to his green one during the battle of Crait? I’ve changed the blade color in the current draft of my edit, but the hilt would take more After Effects skill than I have. I’ve also thought it might be cool to replace Ben’s silver hilt in the hut to be the Skywalker saber. This could give more depth to the line “that saber, it belongs to me” in TFA.

Author

I feel like without the right hilt it would seem really tacky (also there’s that whole plot reason Luke uses his father’s saber during the fight).

Author

I agree about the hilt. Luke using his father’s saber at the end never really made much sense to me though. Sure it’s the “Skywalker saber” passed down from generation to generation, but Kylo literally saw it get ripped in two a few scenes before. Wouldn’t that be a dead giveaway that Luke wasn’t really there? Or at least a huge hint that something wasn’t right about the situation? Plus, I kind of like the symbolism of him showing up with his green saber to use it to right the mistake he committed with it in the past.

Luke rejected his father’s sword twice in the movie, the end has him accept and use it.

I was watching some of The Last Jedi BTS and seeing how much practical costumes they made for the Canto Bight sequence really surprised me, especially considering how much of it they actually didn’t use in the final cut.

Not a drastic idea, but I think a worthy change would be to cut the slot machine gag with BB-8 and the cgi alien and replace it with various shots from the Canto Bight deleted scene, which is basically just B-roll of random casino guests. So when Finn and Rose start looking for the Codebreaker, instead of seeing the slot machine gag, we see all the weird aliens and shady aristocrats that they see. Cutting the gag would you give you about 20-25 seconds of space if you want to keep the music in sync, which you could use the music-only version of the movie as a source or reference.

Just feel like it would be more useful to expand that environment and help the audience get more immersed in it, much like how the Mos Eisley Cantina shows of various weird patrons, rather than using the time for an unnecessary gag.

Definitely. I was planning on doing something similar in my edit, as well as moving this sequence to the beginning of the movie.
