Well I feel the same way about theists who keep trying to convince me I’m going to hell for picking the wrong deity.
I’m sure the intent of this thread was not to create an avenue for atheistic circle-jerking.
Just saying. You guys have beaten the opinion that God doesn’t exist into the ground already. It does not require further expounding upon.

Actually, the thread was created to discuss religion. The thread’s creator considers me a bigot for not putting religious beliefs that I don’t like on a pedestal, but I don’t see how responding to other people’s statements with my opinions is a circle-jerk. I’ve explained the rationale for my belief pretty clearly. Also, my opinion is that regardless of whether God exists or not no one should subscribe to any religion of any kind.

Hmmm…you believe different than I do? Ok, you’re going to be tortured forever after you die.
Oh, and that other guy who led a terrible life, raped, robbed, murdered, kicked puppies and pushed down old ladies, but accepted Jesus as his savior right at the end? He’s a better person than you are.
Nah, doesn’t seem like a shitty belief system at all.
A guy who accepts getting saved at the end isn’t gonna fool God if he’s not sincere. And if he’s sincere? Why wouldn’t that matter?
I mean how would such a guy have heard of Jesus anyway if not for someone else taking time to point it out to him. Someone who noticed he was on a destructive path and took a lot of effort to help him onto a better one?
I don’t know why you’d be against the idea that even a horrible person could find a way to redeem themselves. I mean can criminals be rehabilitated or not? Should we lock people up forever on a 1st offense? Or should we give them other chances?
K. Let’s have this ride.
Isn’t forgiveness really only respectable when you choose to no longer harbor anger towards someone because you are above holding a grudge even if they have wronged you?

I am not trying to convince you of that. And you don’t have to read the thread. It’s like, if people hate The Last Jedi, they don’t have to contribute to the relevant discussion threads being toxic by continually bashing on the film repeatedly and ruining meaningful discussion about the film. They can voice their opinion, but once it is thoroughly made, dead horses need not be beaten because it drags the conversation down.
I would enjoy talking about why faith or religion is meaningful to whomever might discuss such, and not necessarily specific to my own. Not continually complaining about why faith or religion is stupid.
chyron just put a big Ric pic in your sig and be done with it.
I am, and this may be surprising given my personality, someone who believes that almost anyone can redeem themselves and realize the error of their ways, no matter how awful they used to be. I think our problem, and I’ll presume to speak for Frink here, is that people who have caused far less harm are not forgiven purely because they didn’t worship the right deity while a Hitler or a Manson could make it to heaven if they just believed in God at the last second. Even if Hitler really felt horrible about what he did and wanted to somehow (as absurd as this hypothetical is) make amends for what he did, he’d still go to hell unless he believed in the specific deity that he needed to.

No one is doing that.

Yes. Yes, you are.

You’re basically just asking for a conversation in which our opinions aren’t represented. That’s far closer to “ruining meaningful discussion,” whatever that means. This is the appropriate thread for me to voice my views on this subject. It’s not like I’m saying these things in the NFL thread or the Harmy’s Despecialized thread.

But your opinion has already long since been made. Beating it to death accomplishes nothing. The fact that several of you agree with each other allows you to validate and feed off of each other, in a continually negative and disparaging discussion.
If I have anything positive or deep to say, it gets drowned out by people’s complaints. Suffice it to say, this is the Religion: The Bitching Thread thread, and it annoys me.
chyron just put a big Ric pic in your sig and be done with it.
Other people don’t validate me, I can assure you that I hold a very low opinion of myself and everything that I say and do. However, I have made my point in response to other people. You’ve repeated yourself many times and not once have I implored you to silence yourself. I also don’t think I’m being negative. I think my worldview, at least when it comes to religion, is healthy and positive. You’ve got people that agree with you in here too. I could just as easily say that you’re drowning my positive and deep statements but I won’t say that.

A rapist and murderer who legitimately gives his life to Christ is less of a sinner than me. That’s just stupid.

Why?
I mean what’s the end game in your eyes exactly?
It’s sort of like saying a guy who was a really swell guy, but who never quite got over his racism should still be invited to the mixed wedding party instead of the former head of the local KKK who publicly backed out of his past ways and begged a sincere apology of the couple who then forgave him.
I mean is who was ‘nicer’ on a daily really the important thing here?
K. Let’s have this ride.
I’m just sitting at my computer, shaking my head that someone can think this way.
And that comparison is terrible.
And “nicer” is a terrible way to try and describe the difference between a rapist/murder and someone who isn’t convinced that Jesus was resurrected and is the son of God.
And some people in this thread wonder why I think religion is a terrible, terrible thing.
i don’t think it’s a terrible thing - but people certainly have done terrible things because of it.
but some people really do follow the values and morals of their religion to their heart, and I don’t see how that’s negative, since in theory 90% of religions say you should do good things. dare I say they’re a silent majority.
but i really don’t know much about it, that’s just what i think.
I don’t really think all religion is a terrible, terrible thing.
But the attitude expressed on this page is something many religions teach and it’s dumbfounding.

I mean, I wouldn’t invite the former head of the KKK to a mixed wedding no matter how long ago he’d left the organization or how sincerely he apologized, so…
If this hypothetical KKK leader (assuming he never participated in a lynch mob) actually had dedicated himself to civil rights and realized the error of his ways and sought forgiveness, I’d love to invite him to my mixed wedding. The difference is that 1) he’s not a dangerous murderer, 2) he has gone beyond apology and wants to fight for the right cause, and 3) he isn’t seeking forgiveness and making amends with a cosmic deity that didn’t actually suffer because of him, he’s seeking to improve the lives of the people that he once tried to oppress. Like I said, I do believe in real redemption. I just don’t believe in the fake redemption of asking God for forgiveness.

I was trying to show the difference between the level of conversion. I mean good analogies are hard to pull up at the best of times. So I’m sorry it wasn’t the perfect setting.
The analogy I gave was based on the couple doing the inviting. It was based on them choosing who to invite and who not to.
In that sense it seems reasonable they’d be more likely to invite someone who’d been a lot more terrible in the past. But who’d made an effort to change course. Than they’d be for a guy who’d made no real effort at all. In spite of not really doing much wrong in the past.
K. Let’s have this ride.
But that’s all irrelevant.
Because one guy raped women and murdered them.

I’d just like to say that this is not really how it works. The rapist/murderer is not less of a sinner than you. He did not sin less than you just because that sin is forgiven. But, he will be saved rather than you, because he gave complete recognition to the person who bought him the choice to ask for forgiveness.

If you say so. I suppose I better just move on with my repulsive and shitty life, though maybe I could better my reputation by murdering a few unborn children with no medical issues.
